Drilling the slug is a good trick. I seem to recall that's how the Wright brothers cut out their first crankshaft.

Hi ! The contraption you were not sure about is for a grinding wheel balancer. You place the grinding wheel between the flat and conical pieces and then place the shaft on the balancing apparatus, usually 2 intersecting wheels on each side, so the shaft can spin freely to find the heavy spot on the wheel. Anyway that's my take on it.

Gary, you don't need an extended drawbar, just a socket on an extension on the ratchet wrench. I go that route whenever I put my right angle attachment on...

Gary, try to find an Andrea boring head. It's also stationary when in use but is has a SK40 or SK50 or Mc4 adapter which can be changed easily. You can add your own interface if needed. Great stuff from before the cnc era. Best! Job

Gary, Awesome video, thanks for the shout out ! I didn't know Cummings had a N-Gas version of the 5.9, should be a solid unit. Lol...Now I know why your truck was riding so low when leaving the swap meet 😂😂 Enjoyed, ATB....Dean

Love the innovation making parts from scraps Gary. Likewise I'll always favour a bit of Fab over a lot of machining. Some nice new tools but I do wonder how you have the space to put everything. Good to see the engines working in the field. Cheers
@OldIronMachineWorks
@OldIronMachineWorks Жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul. Space is no problem for the small tools, it’s the machines that are the challenge. I have put the new shop plans on hold for now but will be working on the house when weather gets nicer. I should gain about 700 Square feet of shop space. Not a lot but will give me a little elbow room. Always nice to have you stop by Paul. Gary

Hey love the channel Have you ever seen the trick of smoking threads I'm sure you have but you take an oxy acetylene torch and turn the fuel on only and smoke the threads and it keeps the bbs off of them they won't stick it makes a coating on the metal

Are the natural gas engines prone to shrinking manifolds and cracking the ears off the heads like the diesels are?
@OldIronMachineWorks
@OldIronMachineWorks Жыл бұрын
We have some that have shrunk, but not enough to break ears off. We have been able to just open up the holes in the manifold slightly. Thanks for stopping by Brian. Gary

Could the mystery tool be some kind of arbor to balance wheels?
@OldIronMachineWorks
@OldIronMachineWorks Жыл бұрын
Tom, definitely gave that some thought. But was thinking the cones would have to be clamped tight on whatever wheel your balancing. Great to see you pop in Tom. I hope your recovery is going well. Gary

Hi Gary is that a standard 5.9 diesel head on pumping engine with long spark plugs? and lower compression pistons, is this a Cumins parts arrangement or after markets parts? i have been reading lately about engine makers are converting diesels to run on Hydrogen , spark ignition and lowered compression ratio.
@OldIronMachineWorks
@OldIronMachineWorks Жыл бұрын
Dale, these are Cummins natural gas engines. Different heads, low compression, pistons, and other differences than a diesel. All Cummins, no aftermarket.

We don’t always keep a supply at Ellenhead bolts on the service trucks. But clearly they would work.
