Old Man Emu BP-51 Tundra Suspension - Watch Before Buying - WE BROKE IT - 1 Yr Off Road and Overlanding Review.
This is why I don't believe in Unboxing video reviews on Off road and Overland products. Sometimes you just have to use a product, get it out there on the trail, beat it up a little before you really know what you have.
In this video we cover the Good, the Bad and newly found UGLY on ARB's Old Man EMU BP-51 Suspension kit. The Short version is I still love this suspension but I can't fully recommend it without pointing out a possible defect that did cause a serious failure on one of our recent trips... that said there is a very easy work around... and I will show you that in the video as well. If you have this suspension WATCH this video...
I would love to hear from all of you on this one... I am conflicted... it is a great product but also hard to recommend with this issue... Have any of you had this issue? Do think it is caused by something else in addition to what I mention? Have you used any of the work arounds discussed?
This does seem to be isolated to the Tundra platform/kit... I ran this suspension system on my 4Runner with Zero Issues for over 30K miles.

Got it professionally installed on my '19 4runner. Big difference both on and offroad. Rear became soft after 8 months or so. I have a full steel rear bumper with tire carrier and I got medium spring kit. Gonna switch it to heavy. It even took jumps on-road.

I had this kit on a Tacoma. Ride quality was great. I had 3 shocks develop a leak. ARB warrantied all 4 for me so they would all have the same life span. All of them leaked at that fitting on the shock body. ARB doesn’t have a procedure developed to rebuild these yet even though they are rebuidable.

Thanks for the info on the leaking rears. Hopefully impact was the problem as that should be easy enough to fix. I just installed a set of these in my 2018 Tundra last night (only got the rears done so far) and I made a cutout for the fitting with a cutoff wheel and cleaned it up with a Dremel so hopefully I don't have this issue! Great video!

The obvious problem is that the truck is under-sprung and needs larger bump-stops. The shock shouldn't ever become the bump-stop. It's all on ARB. The whole problem can be fixed with a little better engineering.
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 3 жыл бұрын
All good points... I do have a hard time believing just a bump-stop solves this considering the shock in my case was pretty well protected by an inflated airbag... I get it isn't the same thing... but you get what I am saying. Agree on shock shouldn't be bump-stops... in this case I don't think they were. I think it takes fairly minimal amount of force to have these two components contact each other.

Hello, I got the same suspension kit on my 2016 SR5 Tundra. Love the kit few little issues at the back as well though. For the issue your talking about, if you read in the instructions, it tells you to have at least 10mm gap between the " banjo " fitting and the upper mount( metal bracket part of the upper mount welded on the frame). What I did is I grind a half moon around it. Mine never hit but still started leaking recently from the same fittings. My greaseable shackles have a loose and they're pretty much brand new. But yes you're right ARB stand behind their products.!!!!

@@stevenpeterson8444 Did you try it? It works like a charm on my 4runner, I left the reservoir lose until the shock was in place as the twisting of the shock does impart a twist in the hose, I then set the reservoir in the position where the hose was least stressed. Looking at this video and my 2014 Tundra, I would think that it will take only a 45 degree rotation to the rear to clear the frame and allowing the reservoir to sit further to the rear will alleviate most of the binding. A bend that does not kink the hose will not damage it. FWIW, this might preferred to cutting your truck frame.

Since the installation of the Air Bags required the removal of the rear bump-stops on the Tundra. I'm betting the reservoir fitting clearance issue is due to the shock bottoming out and crushing the upper mounting bushing. There-by allowing the fitting to hit the mount. That upper rubber bushing is there to allow a tiny bit of movement and to isolate the chassis from noise and vibration NOT to suck up the energy from a bottomed out shock. There are no shocks avail that (as far as I know) have a built in bump-stop. I'd either get the heavy duty springs or figure out a way to limit the "up" travel enuf that the shock doesn't bottom out. YMMV RON
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 3 жыл бұрын
This makes a lot of sense... On one hand the air bags weren't deflated when this happened... so it would be hard to completely bottom out the shock but I get what you are saying. You would be correct on the shock not having a built in bump stop. Good point on the bushing as well. I still believe the positioning of the hose is inherently risky. With that risk in mind... your Point is great... you may never wont to run this kit without carefully checking and adjusting your bump stop. I still wonder if even with a bump does the shock generate enough pressure to rub/hit the hose.
@nonope1774
@nonope1774 3 жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorAuto I thought about that. I think clearencing the shock mounts and making sure there is plenty of bumpstop to take on the biggest hits before the shock bottoms out, is the complete answer. I learned from a friend that builds real Baja 500 trucks in his shop about bumpstops, air bumps, and hydro bumps. They are more important than I understood for controlling the truck on bigger hits.

He told me if I do get it make sure I get that Toyota bushings as the ones you get with the old man emu kit are not the best and do create issues so he told me to make sure I had a set of Toyota bushings for when it’s being installed. I can see if that relates to your tundra or not but it might be .

FYI, changing pre-load on the shock to change ride height will affect the amount of droop travel of the shock. I am not familiar with trucks but street cars should not use pre-load to change height beyond doing corner balancing because it will affect performance. I would imagine on the truck you do not want to take away too much droop by cranking up height via pre-load.
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right... there are several variables with trucks but depending on your UCA's and a few other things each model truck is going to have ranges for preload that you should not exceed. This is why even bolt on kits can get people in trouble if they don't pay attention to installation directions.

1. Adjust bump stops to properly prevent bottoming out the shock 2. Bend out/grind out the lip near the reservoir fitting 3. Either clearance the lip around the reservoir line as well, or wrap it with a sleeve to prevent chaffing. This is a problem on many other platforms and brands as well.

@@OutdoorAuto To be honest, I don't think that's OME issue. This is not the kit "set it and forget it" type. You must adjust it properly for the terrain you're driving on. If you get it wrong then you end up bottoming out and risking damage to the shock. Don't forget, those are made from alluminum and no matter what they/OME do the alluminum will not stand a chance against hi-grade steel of the frame. If your dump compression was set properly, the chances of getting that bushing squeezed so much would be close to zero. Anyways, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm pretty sure many OME owners would thank you for that.

I had read about this "potential" problem on my Tacoma. When reading through the warranty information on my Icons it mentioned that the warranty would not honor fixing the shock if that occurred. I did notice that the shock valve was much closer on one side than the other so I cut the one side to avoid it. There was a write up on TacomaWorld related to the issue on the Icons. Seems like a potentially common occurrence for several shock brands when folks actually use their vehicles. My guess would be something to do with the bushing and wear over time.

How would you rate the ToyTech 2.5 Aluma kit vs these OME B-51s? I tow another car with my 2011 Tundra a few times a year. Right now its a stock truck with 140k miles but I have a bed rack and sliders and few things on the way and maybe a tent soon. I know nothing will be great suspension wise for off-road and towing but thinking maybe the articulating bags you mentioned in another video along with a kit from ToyTech (they are local to me). I was debating between the Aluma 2.0 and 2.5 because thats what they recommenced along with the rear lift shackle vs the add a leaf kit. But also debating between money for suspension vs a lsd or locker or bumper + winch. Want to run 35s and goal is to maybe do The Maze in Canyonlands in a few years but I'm just getting into it all and need to prioritize the build before buying things. Really appreciate your videos, they are very helpful!

I have never personally run the Aluma's but I have heard very good things. The design is going to more similar to Icons than the BP-51's... The BP-51 really is its own animal with the internal by-pass tech. But when you see new tech sometimes you also see the bugs/defects in the first try. IF you tow a lot I think the Aluma and Bags could be a good call... gives you a lot of flexibility.

its always question do you really need to install 3.5 K dollars struts vs bilstein 5100 or even 1 K 6112. I wonder this, and I'm not trying bushing, just how many people do Baja type off road. As my opinion it's last thing you want do, well more important spring, after weight your truck. Like have GVWR is 8990 but my total weight as of right with family and dog 8960 lbs from weight. Ride quality is most important is tire pressure with your weight. Typical after market mistakes in manufacture as they don't want redesign that hydraulic port just for the Tundra. My guess it will addressed in next model.
@HighjakSecondary
@HighjakSecondary 3 жыл бұрын
The advantage to these more expensive kits is not that you need to do baja driving to benefit from them. The big pros are all of the advantages that inherently come with a remote reservoir and the added adjustability in height, compression, and rebound. Without these you're just left with what that shock is capable of out of the box. With adjustability you are able to tune almost every aspect to your vehicle, its weight, style of driving, terrain, and make adjustments as the vehicle changes and has weight added to it or removed.

This isn't actually accurate... even Old Man Emu admitted to the issue with design and changed the install directions. The issue really comes when your rear axel is articulating front and back and side to side... the clearance from the reservoir hose and the shock mount is simply not big enough. Again... like the video lays out... even the manufacturer has admitted this and changed the install directions for a Tundra.

From my investigation as a rookie or newbie, I’ve learned that anytime you work on your suspension with a lift, you’re affecting everything on your vehicle. I’ve heard a lot of people are now learning they have to get a custom driveshaft to rebalance the lift. Also people doing different gear ratios, basically it seems you’re reengineering the whole truck. The issue with Toyota specifically on lifting the caster loss when you put a lift on. The upper control arms fix this issue, but also allow additional clearance for down travel. Now speaking directly to caster, it’s a measurement that doesn’t affect tire wear, but affects how the vehicle drives. The less caster you have, the more unstable the vehicle feels, while the more caster you have the more stable the vehicle feels. I’ve done several Toyota lifts that have had very low caster but still seemed to drive fine, while as my own 2000 4runner felt like it was unstable at speeds until I put control arms on. Honesty it’s very situationally based. Hopefully that sheds some light on why people recommend them.
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 3 жыл бұрын
Great points... I get the caster issue... Although I think that one doesn't get talked about enough... like you said it can be situational... but also if you go with the stock UCA and you still have positive caster (I guess you could say buffer... enough of it) it definitely doesn't seem to cause too much of an issue. I feel like the down travel and issues with alignment seem to dominate the UCA conversation.
@xiLiViiD
@xiLiViiD 3 жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorAuto They do dominate the conversation, but there’s also to much out there that’s misleading. The biggest effect is how it affects the vehicles handling. Negative caster is like riding a bike with the handle bars flipped around, unstable. The down travel part only really gives an inch of usable down travel. For newer Toyota’s 04 (04 4runners, 05 Tacoma’s) and up they changed the upper controls to have a control arm mounted ball joint instead of a knuckle mounted one, which takes away some of the issues with the knuckle hitting the coil on full down travel

Question: You comment a lot saying this suspension provides a good ride, but can you compare that to the stock ride as a reference point? Is it better than stock on road? Obviously I would assume the ride off road is better. I know this is kind of a trick question since the suspension is tunable. But I personally would guess most of us accrue most of our mileage on asphalt and dirt roads where we want a soft ride.
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 2 жыл бұрын
These shocks can be made to ride even softer than stock. What most people dont understand though is that with a super plush ride, you sacrifice handling in most cases. For instance, you can soften up the compression and rebound enough to eat up all the small bumps and ride really smooth, but then when it comes to highway joints or unexpected larger bumps on the highway, it could be dangerous as the vehicle doesn't have the proper damping to account for quick changes in terrain.
@OutdoorAuto

I’ll echo what @shocksurplus said… Tundras have a pretty bad nose dive issue with hard breaking and are a bit soft on fast hwy turns… The OME’s instantly improved my HWY handling… similar affect of adding a sway bar… but even more noticeable.

@@OutdoorAuto Good luck getting the springs - you might run the part numbers past 4-wheel parts as they have multiple sources. If you have no reason to remove the front shocks, I'd recommend just cutting out a notch or triangle in the bucket just above the tube.

King makes great stuff... They are back ordered around 6-7 months right now though... so tough to get.

@@OutdoorAuto unsure who told you that but you can Walk into DownSouth Motor Sports any day of the week and get what you need for any Toyota Truck. Check them out online and order direct since you do not live in the SoCal Area.
