Looks like it was a well cared for "old Iron" mill. You all did a Nice job on the restoration to bring her back to life with a fresh color scheme. Surprising the ways, lead screws, and bearings were in that good of shape. How is the flatness and backlash and what is the designation of the tool holder? Quite the pile of scotchbrite I bet! Well done and thanks for sharing this with us! Hope you get lots more years of good use from it!
@KOPOprojects
@KOPOprojects 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! A lot of hard work went into that machine and it's nice to see that you enjoy it! Actually the milling was a bit rebuilt in 2006 but the previous owner kept it for 3 years in a humid barn without using it so that's why the parts are in such good shape but that she is in such a bad exterior condition. The tool holder is a MTB2 to ER32. The backlash is quite good and I did'nt checked for flatness yet!

Wow, all that work, and all the removal of great British machine-tool fitted assembly, just to repaint and reassemble it? When at 6:57 you see all that beautiful clean amber oil pouring out, it's a signal this machine was not badly maintained. Good luck with your (improved paint job) Victoria. And hey guys, do you think when you start some of that repeat scraping or other repetitive operations you could do the first few seconds atregular speed, so we can see what's happening. Thanks for making this.

Lovely resto job, but the machine itself confuses me a bit. It has a ram up top, which can slide back and forth but nothing seems to be mounted on it. On a typical Bridgeport style machine, the mill head is mounted on the ram but this one has the mill head mounted to the column. So what's the ram for?
@KOPOprojects
@KOPOprojects 2 жыл бұрын
You can remove the vertical cutting head, slide the ram and put a shaft support.On the shaft , you can put some horizontal cutter to cut gears for example! If you want to picture it you can google horizontal milling machine or universal milling machine and you should find what you're looking for!

Hey we have machines in STOCK like that- that haven't worked in THIRTY years. Not that much love needed to put back in operation, really. We find a good cleaning of all machine ways surfaces, ensure bearings have no rust, some lubrication here and there and it's off to the races, and all else usually falls in place again. 🙂

what you had was a dirty greasy worn out machine. Now you have a beautifully painted cleaned up worn out machine. If you don't scrape in the ways you haven't really addressed the wear in the machine. It could be way out of square, the gibs could be tight in one position and loose in the other. You are not alone, I see this all over youtube where people think restoring a machine means cleaning and painting. I would much prefer to have a machine that was scraped in and accurate with old paint. It will do much better work, cut accurately with the ways 90 deg to each other and take deeper cuts without chattering and leave a better finish.

I hate to be the one that has to do it, but without feedback, you don’t improve . The whole paint process was horrible, old paint was left on, rust was painted over, no primer and some parts still had the old permatex on the surface. I don’t know if you broke it all down, but some internals still had old grease and grim during reinstalling parts.
