In this video I restored an old rusty sledgehammer! 🔨
Like always I started with disassembling, but I didn’t remove the wedge of the handle because I planned to make a new one anyway.
For removing the rust I used two different methods, but only to test the new rust remover I got. For the rest of the rust I used electrolysis and just as expected it turned out great!
I started to clean the surfaces with the angle grinder. Since there was a lot of pitting in the metal this took a while and a lot of grinding wheels..
After that I sanded only from 80 to 320 grit, because the metal was still hardened so the sand paper perished very fast and I didn’t want to waste recourses.
I polished with the angle grinder and surprisingly I got a nice mirror polish!
The handle was a lot of work, since I did the shaping only with one rasp, some files and knives. I added brass rivets and oiled the wood after sanding it up to 240 grit.
And that was it! This project took very long but I learned a lot and it was very fun to make!
I hope you liked the video! Thank you for watching and feel free to leave a comment and subscribe if you liked :)
Until next time :)

Patrick

Loving your videos and the science lessons. Just wondering if you could use lemon juice to remove the rust, maybe mix with bicarbonate soda or flour, wrap and leave overnight? Would it work? Fantastic restoration!
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! Well it would kind of work, but the bicarbonate soda would neutralize the citric acid so there is no point mixing them. But you sure can use citric acid for removing rust. Depending on the concentration of the citric acid it could just take a little longer.

Very nice !! I do love a hammer restoration with a mirror finish 👍🏻 I think a thinner layer of a darker wood running down the centre of the handle would have looked awesome. But a great job.

Great job - as always! If doing much more timber shaping, you may wish to look at a spoke shave - easier than file rasping, but obviously your choice. I really enjoy your shows! 👍😀

Why did you decide to use a metal wedge in the top vs a wooden one?
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft 21 күн бұрын
Because I made the handle out of two parts of wood and glued them together (which isn’t ideal but I didn’t have another option back then) and I thought that making a cut in the top of the handle for a wooden wedge would weaken the handle. Don’t know if that makes sense tbh, but that is what I thought back then. Now I would make a handle out of a solid piece and probably use a wooden wedge.

Fantastic work. What "blueing" solution do you use in your other videos? The stuff I have doesn't work nearly as fast or as well.

Thank you! Most of the time I use the ballistol quick bluing, but tifoo works well also. Which one do you use?
@roccocroce
@roccocroce 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrHutOfHandcraft I bought some back in 2013, so maybe that was the issue as well! But for the record it was Kleen-Bore Black Magic. Add the time I guess I was doing repairs but now I am looking to treat bare metal surfaces and I really like the result of what you were using. Same process in a handful of videos I was checking out. Really great stuff.

@@roccocroce Okay I don't know that one. I mainly used the ballistic quick bluing that I mentioned, works pretty good and the handling is also very easy!

no need for the 2 pins you just made 2 weak points in the handle
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment mate! Actually four pins, not two 😃 I put them there because in my opinion it looks very nice. The weakening of the handle is neglectable, because the pins balance it out. Just used the hammer last week, it didn’t break 🙂 Much love ✌🏻

@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft 2 жыл бұрын
@@jrvn94 Yes you are absolutely right, but I chose a very good wood glue, so that stuff will do most of the work. Probably the brass pins wouldn’t be necessary to hold it together, but I thought it would look cool 😄
