I want to add to my previous statement that many of the other ground support equipment mechanics I worked with did not like working on anything that did not have a power plant. They felt it was beneath them. I felt that if I did not do a good job that the jack would fail and the load it was carrying would fall on whoever was under it. That person would be terribly hurt or killed and of course the load which could be a vehicle or aircraft would be damaged. I commend you for your excellent work on bringing these abused and often forgotten pieces back to working condition.

Time 1:24 - you ask about the hole at the end of the ratchet. I'm surprised the hole did not go through. Many tools had a oiling hole with a ball bearing with a spring holding the ball gearing in a closed position. To oil the tool , you'd place the end of the oil can against the ball bearing with a slight push. That allowed the oil to bypass the ball bearing and fill the inner cavity of the tool. When you removed the tip of the oil can, the bearing would close the hole preventing the oil from seeping out. I've had Snap-On (and other brand) ratchets with this oiling feature. Revisiting ..... then again, the hole may have been part of the manufacturing process to drill out the hole for the detent spring and ball, then closed back up to keep the oil/grease inside the tool head ...... FWIW ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I maintained and repaired many of these hydraulic jacks as well as tripod jacks used to lift up aircraft while in the service. This video took me back over 40 years. Thanks.

Noob question: Why did only the spring and that one other part get blued?
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft 9 күн бұрын
That’s a totally legit question. The spring got cold blued because it is located in the inside so I can’t really keep it clean. It happened to me many times that springs corrode and the cold bluing is for preventing that. The other part got cold blued only for aesthetic reasons. As you may have seen in my other ratchet restorations I really like the satin/brushed finish with some black details so I wanted to continue that “tradition” 🙂

I realize this is an older video. However I actually have a similar nail puller like that but mine is forged steel built. Once you understand how to use it, it is an invaluable tool to remove nails that are even with, or even sunken into any type wood. I pulled hundreds of nails using such a tool. No other way to get them out without totally destroying the wood...

@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft 25 күн бұрын
To make a smooth finish on the paintjob later. That’s a standard procedure. As you can see before I used the primer there were some spots were putty remained. These are the spots that needed putty 🙂

The coarser gear used in old ratchets have a lot more degree of angle per tooth with the smaller engine compartments in new cars the old ratchets won't always work in the space available.

Why did you decide to use a metal wedge in the top vs a wooden one?
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft Ай бұрын
Because I made the handle out of two parts of wood and glued them together (which isn’t ideal but I didn’t have another option back then) and I thought that making a cut in the top of the handle for a wooden wedge would weaken the handle. Don’t know if that makes sense tbh, but that is what I thought back then. Now I would make a handle out of a solid piece and probably use a wooden wedge.
