I read a comment from someone who saw Roger on this tour. He said that, before "Won't Get Fooled Again", he said that he wouldn't do the scream at the end because, at his age, it would rip his vocal chords. Instead, he made it an audience participation thing. He told the audience, "You do the scream for me." Authentic and honest.

A couple of years ago I seen RD on the Rock Legends Cruise doing this song. Before 'the scream', I seen him getting psyched up to do it. Everybody watching and waiting. It was on the pool deck and I was behind the band on the next deck up. I had a view of what the band saw. He nailed it and the place went nuts. Magical moment for me to witness.

I can't imagine who would rather hear a "perfect sounding" lip-synch instead of a genuine live performance. As to age, Tony Bennett sang live, not lip-synched, through his 80's and even into his 90's, with his final live performance at age 95. Major respect to Roger for keeping it real.

I saw Roger just about three weeks back. I can't tell by the video if it was the show I was at, but it had to be within a day either way. He accepts his age on stage, pokes fun at it, and notes his hearing issues. He stopped a couple times as he was having some difficulty picking up the intro, but he kept at it. He's still a great performer and the voice remains pitch perfect...naturally pitch perfect. I closed my eyes as he was singing and it could have been fifty years back. The voice has not only held up, but it's as good as ever. Was very happy I went to see him. It can be hit and miss with older rockers. Not the case with Roger. Great.

We are not complaining about the lack of live vocals. There is value in the ambience of a live concert, especially if the performers are engaging with the audience in between bits. We object to them advertising this as live music, when the musical parts are canned. They would still get people to come see them, but at a lower ticked price and in fewer numbers, if they were being honest.

I went to the Roger Daltrey gig in Boston 2 weeks ago. It is hard to believe how great his voice is at the age of 80. Before they performed Won't Get Fooled Again, Roger explained to the audience how he's sung the infamous Daltrey Scream at the end of the song for half a century and he always woke up with a hoarse voice the next morning because of it. So in Boston, he asked the crowd to do the "Daltrey Scream" when it got to that part of the song. And it worked out great! Long live Roger Daltrey who is in my opinion the greatest rock and roll vocalist of all time. BTW, Roger mentioned that if they are still alive, there is a good chance of a new Who album and a Who tour in 2025. Time will tell.

The Who had 3 lead vocalists. Usually Daltrey, often Townshend, and sometimes bass player John Entwistle sang lead. Maybe just my opinion, but it can be argued that Daltrey is the best rock front man ever. What about Jagger, Plant? (Take away Bohemian Rhapsody and Live Aid, and half as many people even know that Queen once existed). Keep in mind, Daltrey had a better voice than those two greats back then, and it's still better today.

@@1mmickkThe lead singer of the La's, Lee Mavers, deserves a special mention because he did what the Manics promised to do, make just one album and no more. He was a complete perfectionist, constantly re-tuning, he wanted original instruments, including an organ 'with 1960s dust'! Although the album didn't turn out the way he wanted (which he rightly felt betrayed by), I think they captured the sound he wanted in their fantastic single 'There She Goes'. After years away from the industry, I think they only did one 'comeback' tour in 2005, and Lee has done a couple of other surprise gigs with a new band. Always describing himself as a 'conduit' for the music (rather than a songwriter), he's a sensitive soul and a true musician.

Jon has lowered the key of some songs in his current tour with The Band Geeks. But then he was singing way higher without falsetto in 1969 than most vocalists today with falsetto. And you could tell it live because in the first few gigs last year he forgot his own lyrics. As for playing live, there were several sums in the Wakeman era that really needed four hands, so they used pre-corded track to cover it. For this tour, Jon asked The Band Geeks for two keyboard players, in order to do away with that necessity. Which promoted a lot of idiots saying that the band weren’t good enough to play all of Wakeman’s parts.

And she was actually singing....over tracks which were synched up to videos showing on a huge screen behind the stage. It was awful. Zero spontaneity. I'm a pro musician and when you play to tracks there is no chance to improvise or truly interact with the audience in terms of break downs, extended outros, etc. It's not about being a purist. Music is about expressing emotion, not merely producing sounds. Tracks limit the ability to be expressive and spontaneous. If an artist can't sing anymore then....RETIRE.

I saw Roger do an interview years ago where he said “give me a bum note and a bead of sweat any day.” It’s not always about accuracy…it’s about feelings and passion. I had the great fortune to see Tony Bennett in concert when he was in his mid-80’s. No one expected him to sound the way he sounded when he was in his 30’s or 40’s. But as his voice changed, he made the wise decision not to perform too often with large orchestras, choosing a more intimate jazz trio or quartet. This allowed him to adjust his approach and actually brought greater subtlety and emotional shading to his performances. I wish some younger singers would try this earlier in their careers and not rely so much on technology to sound “perfect.”

Jagger had swagger, and an unmistakably distinctive recognizable voice, but a limited range and flexibility. He can still carry on at 80, because he was never a screamer (like McCartney was. Daltrey knew how to sing and scream using a solid vocal technique so it wouldn’t hurt him). Mick always knew how to take care of himself and his voice. My parents saw Plant in the 70's and my mother m said he couldn't hit the notes then. It's no secret that Plant avoids most of the Zeppelin reunions because he can't sing those notes anymore. That's why he sticks to the lower intensity vocals with Alison Krause.

I heard recently that Roger said he’s retiring. It’s pretty hard touring when you’re 80. Plus, he said all these older artists need to get out of the way and let the new generation take over. Unfortunately, I don’t see a lot of that kind of music on the horizon. Not in the US anyway. I’ve seen Sweden has a lot of 80s style bands. I think Americans don’t appreciate them, unfortunately.

I had to laugh a little when I saw the title of this video because I literally was just thinking about this yesterday! A recent performance of “Behind Blue Eyes” popped up on my KZfaq homepage and I clicked on it and watched. I thought Roger Sounded really good and that it sounded like a live performance, but I’m not a musician so I wasn’t 100% sure. I thought to myself if it was live it was such a contrast to other bands like the Eagles who aren’t preforming fully live anymore! So now I have confirmation that The Who performances are still live!

I just was at a concert of Burton Cummings on Canada Day, 1 July 2024. It was very enjoyable . He brought the higher notes in his songs into a more comfortable range for himself now. He still rocked on and talked with his audience. His back up band were all good singers and talented instrumentalists. It was a really great show put on by one of my favorites. My family, much younger, enjoyed it as well. Authentic talent at 77 years of age. Here Roger is another fine example of true artistry and talent. Thank you for this.

If a band/singer is performing in front of a paying audience they better be *performing*. Lip sync is fraud as far as I'm concerned. If a performer is unable to do the job, then, like the rest of us when we are too old, they should hang it up. The "singer' being referred to who was lip synching has no need for more money. I'll never go to a concert by any band who lip syncs. What am I paying for? To listen to a recording while someone sings air-vocals? Yeah right. Go watch a video of one of their concerts when they were in their prime. I have gone to see performers who were past their prime and bad to the point where it was disillusioning . Knowing I paid to see someone pretend to perform would be worse. As for Roger Daltrey that was impressive. Thanks Fil for showing us his example. We won't get fooled again!

I'm 73 years old. So I understand that there are some things I can no longer do. My feeling if you can't sing the song live in the original key, it's time to retire. There is no shame in that. You had your moment in the sun and you probably made enough money. Accept reality. Roger Daltrey is truly amazing! And as long as he can perform at that high level, I say more power to him, if he wants to continue performing live.

I've seen the who twice in the past 12 years or so, last time when they did Quadrophenia live, with an orchestra. Roger had to take some breaks to rest his voice and there would be some Townshend solo stuff performed but when he was on stage he was great. They ended with Love Reign O-er Me, and Roger took a pretty big break to get ready for that, but when he came out he killed it, hit all those great big notes seemingly without issue. So glad I saw him perform while he still could/can.

If a performer can't do it any more with a fairly high level of quality, then they need to retire. When going on this philosophy, I think of athletes first, then singers and dancers. Now, some of these performers can shift to something else, but they are _shifting to something else_ . A baseball player becomes a pinch hitter rather than an everyday player. A singer or dancer basically takes that same road, they scale back. Is the performance as good as it once was? No. You either accept it or you don't. Generally, I don't accept it.
