The instrument was named after an 18th century Spanish nobleman who was referred to as the "Duke of Alcantara." The instrument was also allegedly owned by Napoleon I of France in the early 19th century. The violin was owned by Albert Caressa later in the 19th century. He sold it from his shop in Paris to a collector, Erich Lachmann of Berlin. In 1925, Lachmann sold the instrument to Dr. Steiner-Schweitzer, a collector in Switzerland. In 1929, the Stradivarius was bought by Rudolph Wurlitzer in New York and it was later transferred to one of his properties in Cincinnati. In 1945, the violin was sold to Ilya Schkolnik, the newly appointed concertmaster to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. In the late 1950s, he moved to Los Angeles and the instrument was sold to oilman Milton Vedder. He died shortly after and his wife, Genevieve Vedder, donated it in 1961 to the University of California, Los Angeles's music department (now the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music). Professor of violin and musicology Marrocco Thomas performed on the Stradivarius until 1967. The instrument was later embroiled in a decades-long mystery involving a disappearance and theft before being reunited with UCLA. This instrument is valued at around $2,290,000.

I'm sure it loved the few moments of redundancy and staying in first position.

@@crr1950 True. One of the great lessons of Old Time and traditional music is that fulfillment comes when you stop trying to impress others and just be yourself.

@rcg 5 , lol, fulfillment can be using the instrument to its depths without trying to impress. I just get bored listening to the redundancy of most fiddle tunes. That's not to say I don't enjoy them, because I do.. Spent too great a portion of my life listening to them. Just move along and give me more.

Proof that Stradivarius would have loved flat foot dancing.

I've been wondering for years what a hoedown would sound like on a Strad! Are those the same strings a classical player would use? I'd really like to know if it has more power than most. For instance, would its volume rise over the banjos and other instruments during "Parking Lot Pickin'? In my experience, so many fiddles get swallowed up and can barely be heard in these informal festival jams.

I don't know what kinda jam you've been attending but I want in on that... All I can hear when I'm playing a banjo is the fiddle and all I can hear when I'm playing my fiddle is the damned thing screaming in my ear, or the occasional remark from my wife about how she never thought she'd hear herself begging me to play a banjo.

There a video of Tommy playing a Stradivarius and of all the songs he picks Cotton Eye Joe. You can tell when he picks it up he ain't impressed with the action or bridge and I reckon they wouldn't allow him to tune it sawmill. He shrugs it off after a few bars and says something like "I wouldn't swap my fiddle for a half million dollars. I paid ten dollars for that thing and wouldn't trade it for this one here... to play on, anyway." Guy only had one fiddle his whole life but it was a damn fine instrument. This one sounds great though and you picked a hell of a tune. Listen to that beast sing and stretch itself out, like a giant woken from slumber, 'bout headed to some yonder ho-down.

Woow awesome 😃. I can’t beleve that they let you tune it up to AEAE. Many people are afraid of damageing their instrumet by tuning it up. I’m NOT saying that it WILL dammage the instrument, i’m just saying that a lot of people are afraid that it will.
