The Old Timer Mountain Lion and the Uncle Henry Golden Spike are two very similar knives. Both are a classic hunting knife design with a leather sheath and clip point blade. But I like one just a little better than the other. See if you can guess which one wins.

I had a Golden Spike YEARS ago that my uncle bought for me around 1979-80. Took care of a lot of rabbits and a few deer until the day I lost. Sat it down to put a rabbit in my hunting jacket, and started walking away. I spent at least a couple hours looking for it as soon as I realized it wasn't in its sheath. I'm 51 now and that memory still crushes me.

"Flag on the moon" is the best metric "put down" I've heard. With your permission, I'd like to add it to my arsenal. Good review. Thanks!
@SurvivalOnPurpose

+Mark Ashlock I didn't really intend it as a "put down" but, after all the comments I have received from people who are obviously afraid of fractions, I couldn't resist using it. And you don't need my permission. I stole it from James Yeager. It may be in the "public domain"

Love to get home on Saturday and find a Schrade Saturday video!! Sometimes I think we all get a little carried away with what we ask a knife to do. No insult intended to anyone but they are a cutting tool first and foremost. We're not exploring the frontier, we're not surviving. We're camping, hiking, hunting or fishing and a Schrade or Buck knife will get the job done. IMHO.

Thanks for another fine review. These are both fine knives that should last a while when used properly. Thanks for saying that using a knife as a baton for splitting is not a very useful test. That is one of those things that should only be used when there is no other alternative. Like others, i also enjoy the "balance test" that you do. Keep these videos coming.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't say it should only be done when there is no alternative, only that splitting wood by batoning it is not necessarily a valid test of blade or edge strength. I think batoning to make kindling is a perfectly legitimate practice.

I have an old time knife which was issued to me while in the Air Force, and probably still have another of their knives which I purchased years ago. The knife issued to me have a handle with plastic on it, but everything else is metal and it was used to but line which is used to rig parachutes we put on cargo pallets. The knife looks just like it did when it was new except the carbon steel have changed color to a black except where it is sharpened.

Thank you Brian for another great video.

Thank you for this review and for almost not batoning with these knives. 😀 For $25.00 these seemed like respectable tools. The plastic handles don't bother me considering the price point plus plastic is with us everywhere and can be quite strong and resistive to wear, but I do wish they would not try to make plastic look like stag. Again, given the price point I thought your review demonstrated these were serviceable knives; however, the one point I cannot forgive is a sheath that doesn't fit the blade -- really?
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 6 жыл бұрын
+Richard Edgecomb maybe it was just a problem with that particular sheath or maybe it needs "breaking in". Or maybe it needs redesigned.

It's Delrin (made by DuPont) just like the original U.S.A. made Old Timers used for half a century. All of these videos on the China made Old Timers complain about the "plastic" handles, but that's what's always been used, it's nothing new by any means.

Have to agree on the "full tang vs. rat tang" assessment. I've had more than a few rat tail tang handles break on me, have never had a full tang handle break. I've had chips, rolls, even a crack, develop in full tangs on the blade but never the handle and that has happened on rat tail blades as well. Given my druthers, I'll take the full tang every day. And have to also agree with the "flag on the moon" statement as well, since there aren't any metric system countries flags up there it's kind of hard to disagree with that. Thanks Brian!

Old Timer and Buck were my favorite knives back in the 70s and 80s for gutting and skinning. They both held a great edge, but that was with better steel. I had to get rid of my knives and most of my guns due to a divorce. I got a new woodsman a few years ago. It came shaving sharp but I don’t hunt anymore so I don’t know how good of an edge it holds with 7cr steel.

I have had my Old Timer Mountain Lion since 1981 or 1982,....no problems or complaints. I have used it on many deer. But in the 80's I was hunting in monsoons the leather wrinkled and never recovered. My fault I should have mink oiled it or something. This knife is better than the ones I make. Its a full tang knife not a rat tail tang.

Both seem like nice knives. I like them. But full tang is a full tang. Would be my choice too. ( Just spent most of the day rebuilding a wood and bone handle for a large rat tail tang Sami knife for a friend of mine. ) The sheath of both of them looks hefty and durable. Seems like similar quality as the sheaths of my SCHF42 and 42D. I have to admit I like the Uncle Henry sheath with the pocket bit more. Always nice to have a sharpening stone along. ( I guess real Arkansas stones of proper size are not that difficult to find ) I wonder if the Old Timer fits there? Have a great weekend Bryan :) Big thumbs up!

I have both of these knives. The 160 OT Mountain Lion is all around a far better knife. There's no comparison. My Dad's old American made, Sears Craftsman branded Uncle Henry Golden Spike is in similar a league with my Old Timer Mountain Lion, but my new Chinese made Golden Spike is not.

There's a pic/review on Amazon showing the 165OT which is similar in construction, but isn't truly full tang. Don't know if it's real, but why would somebody fabricate that?🤔

probably because the side steel is of different quality and cost of that one of the blade.

Like your video's and testing on the old stump top, but the metric system went out with Jimmy Carter and we are all better without it. Love your balance tests.

If I am honest I have to admit I wish I had taken time to become more familiar so I can "think in metric". The math is so much easier.

I like these knives, but i sure wish they'd use a slightly better steel, nothing that would break the bank but a 1095 would be nice.

I have them both. The Golden Spike is easier to sharpen, but the Mountain Lion is so much of a better knife than the Golden Spike that it's worth the pain in the butt that it is to get a good edge on.

I think that the Golden Spike has the more traditional look, but the full tang on the Mountain Lion is a plus. I would probably choose the Golden Spike, considering everything else as equal, just because of my preference for the traditional style. But, that's why they make different models of the same basic knife.

And both of those knives would be good fighting knives. They resemble Martial arts knives like Al Mar warrior,.... but their spines are not serrated. Watch out he throws knives. I also have my Old Timer stockman 3 1/2 inches total length it has some wear and patina but still working I carry 3 knives in my pocket a 2 7/8th Gerber with a serrated edge and a ESTWING with a 3 3/8 inch AUS 8 serrated blade all awesome knives,..... I bought the ESTWING at loews hanging on a plastic strip hanging in the tool section for like $4.75 and If I see them again I'm buying more.

Sounds like either one would be a great deal for the money and if you lost or broke one, it wouldn't break the bank!

Another enjoyable vid. Great balance testing in the your "High tech " facility. I'll go with the Golden spike for the looks and better fitting sheath. Oh by the way, most countries understand the metric and imperial systems. Does that mean they have a higher IQ ?, ha. I remember my furlongs, bushels and cwd's, Cheers.

I bought a Golden Spike a while back and was unimpressed with it. Sold it right away. The Mountain Lion looks to be a better knife. I would stick with my Buck 119 over either. I have the 119 with brass and wood handles.

I think we know that he must be completely honest; because even he doesn't know what he's going to say two seconds before the words come out of his mouth. He reminds me of one of my great uncle's. Of course he told the same stories over again; but each time he might get distracted and go a fair piece down along a new rabbit trail. And that can be utterly fascinating. Sometimes, wisdom is about the priceless things that you learn on accident. The rambling is a feature, not a bug in the system. IMO.
