What a great collection! Perhaps just me, but I would rather have a pile of USA Schrades than an equal amount of GEC. I grew up with them and enjoy the history behind them. Thanks for sharing. 👍

Your dad's knife is I X L. Say it fast, I excel. Beautiful. Wish I still had my fathers semi-smooth trapper, that grew legs and walked out of my house. Forget the brand, but have searched since the 70's and cant find another

When I was young, Schrade made good steel blades that held a sharp edge. They were more affordable pocketknives compared to Queen and Case knives. You could find them in most General and Hardware stores. Old Timers cost more than other Schrade ones. Imperial brands relate to Schrade too. The fun part of collecting Schrade knives is you can find some old ones in good shape. I have a model 708 Scout Leader knife that is interesting and there are so many to find makes it a great brand to collect. Some sold with a Western brand name. Western Auto stores and Sears sold them. You will sometimes see Craftsman models too. Thank you for sharing your collection. 🙂

It's great that those oldies have super walk and talk. Snap. That Mighty Mite is a brute for it's size. Old Timers and Uncle Henrys have Odd appeal. Rustic Robust yet elegant..

The 28 OT (mountain Beaver Jr.) There is also a 29 OT Mountain Beaver Sr (bigger version) Kinda like the LB 7 Vs LB 5. and a 30 OT Capybara Fixed. The Wood is a Mix of Rosewood and Ebony with nickel silver separator. (there is no silver in nickel silver It's simply the shiny that's referred) I used to work with my wife in a hunt camp many years ago preparing game and meals. I wore the Sr, she wore the Jr and we both wore a fixed 30 OT as a fixed. Well matching and VERY elegant looking! Schrade also makes a 31 and 32 OT which LOOKS similar, But the Metal separator sweeps forward instead of back. They LOOK similar but nowhere does it ever state what the WOOD actually is! They just say wood. And they NEVER say that the metal is Nickel Silver! They are typically much cheaper too! Also, The 31 and 32 come with Cheesy Pocket clips instead of beautiful leather belt pouches. I carried an LB7 on my belt as a Teen in the 70's. MUCH more affordable than a Buck 110! Less than $15 (middle 70's) than the over $40 that a Buck cost at the time! Plus, you get them at just about any gas station then! The 5 OTH is absolutely gorgeous in my opinion! I absolutely love it!

I love them and have a shelf full of them. Most of these old Schrades can be picked up pretty cheap even in very good condition and they were great quality. And if you get one that's already been used you don't feel like you have to baby it. If you scour eBay everyday you can find some really killer deals, but you have to snap them up as soon as you see them or someone else will.

Nice collection. I would recommend adding one of early American made Old Timer 25OT Trappers to the collection. Old Timer and Uncle Henry early American made models, you can't go wrong. I tend to gravitate towards Old Timer more because I like the look of them better. The newer ones are no longer made in the USA. They are Chinese made and are of lower quality and made from low quality cheap @$$ steel.

My vote: 194 old timer. I carried that one along with my LB 7 for 20 plus years in construction and maintenance in the elevator trade. But I used the 194 ot way more… But then my brother gave me a Spyderco …. So I use my spiderco every day but collect and restore the old timers and the uncle Henry’s. There’s something about those old traditional knives .

Actually swapped the lb 7 out with a Sears/camillus large lockback whenever one needed to be touched up on the blade… that camillus had finger groves back in the 80’s … it had rubber grips . Nickle silver bolsters …

I have a Schrade old timer 340T in high carbon steel that has never been used. My Grandfather gave it to me in the Early 1980s. What might it be worth today?😊

Anyone know the year the Old Timer Trapper (at 30:15) was produced?
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid Жыл бұрын
That's a Chinese production "Schrade in name only" version so it's post 2004. It's probably not possible to nail down an exact year without contacting the company and I doubt even they can tell you. Even when Schrades were really Schrades they didn't use a date code on their knives like Buck and Case do and the most you could usually do was narrow it down to a handful of years based on things like the tang stamp and pin numbers and positions. Some of the old US-made Uncle Henrys came with a serial number either on the bolster or inside the liner, but I don't know how effective they are at nailing down an exact production year.

I inherited a large old timer trapper style knife with a toothpick and a pair of tweezers opposite the bolster. Never seen another like it, anyone know about these? It's like new condition, just not as sharp as I like to make them.

Is there a modern pocketknife with a carbon steel blade for the same price these go for?
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid Жыл бұрын
There's plenty of modern traditionals with carbon steel and plenty of modern one hand openers with D2, which is a high carbon, non stainless steel, but different from, say, 1095, which is closer to what most people are talking about when they say "carbon steel". The price range of the knives in the video goes from about $20 to as high as $100+, though, depending on the model and condition. Even the same models in the same condition can have different values depending on the version, like that 4 pin 7OT lockback, which has a higher collector value than an identical 3 pin, or an 8OT with a matchstrike long pull vs an 8OT with a standard long pull, so "for the same price these go for" is difficult to determine, but you'll be able to find modern production of either type all the way across that range of prices. You won't find many one hand openers in 1095 (Condor makes one), but you'll find a huge number of them in D2. If modern slipjoints is your thing and you're looking at the lower end of the price range, don't discount Rough Ryder's Classic Carbon series. I used to make fun of Rough Ryders until I actually bought some. I bought four of them all at once and each one has better build quality than any Case I own that was made in the last 20 years and most of them can be had between $15 - $20.

you can get ungodly amounts of modern d2 pocket knives. the only 1095 modern folder ik of is a model made by tops, esee makes their avispa in an sk5 carbon steel which is basically 1084.

Always thought a pocket knife with two or three blades was a MUCH better tool than a Buck 110 with just one. Is it just me?
@acid6urns
@acid6urns 9 ай бұрын
depends on what you need it to do the buck has a lock so it can do things like piercing and won’t shut if you accidentally bump the back of it
