The first time I saw I e at the Motor Show ( 2000 at the NEC ), I was asked by a bloke on the stand what I thought. I owned a lovely mk1 Morris Mini Minor at the time, so I wasn't very nice about the BMW effort. I thought this bloke was a punter like me. Turned out he was on the design team and took my comments quite personally.

In my opinion the Ford Ka is tremendously ugly, truly one of the worst. The Mini on the other hand looks great (a real masterpiece by Frank Stephenson) and it also retains its value much better than the Ka.

The new mini one was little more expensive than the old mini. This was over £9500 in its final form. The new mini was a bigger, more accomplished car and really very good value..... just stay clear of any option other than the tlc £100 package, which was a no brainier.....

Ford ka... Ford ka... rings a bell... Oh wait! I remember! That's the rusty death-trap shitbox that fell to pieces after about 5 years!
@oyku.akbulut5 жыл бұрын
It was quite safe for it's class when it was launched. It handles great and moreover, that rust thing is total bullshit from housewives who never bothers to wash the undercarriage of the car for years.
@fossilfueled275 жыл бұрын
In the UK, almost every 1st gen Ford Ka rusted through thanks to completely subpar galvanizing. You shouldn't have to wash the undercarriage of a car if it isn't assembled by cheapskates. I only say this from experience working in garages - Kas simply rust more than everything else the same age, regardless of how well they're cared for. Having driven one, they handle okay. No better or worse than anything else the same size.
@gabrielcooper20444 жыл бұрын
@@oyku.akbulut I own a Ka and can confirm it rusts terribly. You can't defend that. Fun to drive though
4 жыл бұрын
@@fossilfueled27 I don't believe galvinising is a common practice for most manufacturers but Audi did employ it for a while. I think you mean rust proofing, same idea but not via galvanisation. The Ka was happy to rust unfortunately. Funny looking but nice to drive with a good tight little chassis and willing engines based on older tech units.

Seems funny to think that in 2001 they criticised the new Mini for not being mini enough....now compare with the bloated oversize monstrosities that carry the Mini badge today!! I did actually quite like this second gen Mini but BMW have since trashed the brand with their ugly, oversized and overpriced newer models that are totally pointless.

I can’t believe that the new Mini is almost 20 years old! 20! Don’t see many of the original BMW Minis on the road here in the US, I think they’re largely gone now. Too expensive to maintain and they had a reputation for poor reliability and bad electrics (keeping with the British character of the car, most likely.) I know the wheels were really bad on the US roads, and replacing those alloys isn’t cheap. Too bad because I always liked them, drove a friends many times.

The Ka was good for 1996 when expectations were not as high. It was safe (then) and handled decently. It's looks were devisive but it endeared itself to affordable motoring. Then Ford coasted on the Ka for too long. It was poorly constructed and prone to rust and mechanical faults galore. They tried to keep it competitive but other brands came along and wanted a slice of the action. The Ka was really outdated under that design and starting the engine at 6am on a cold February morning made it sound like castanets They were better purchased as new or second hand. Older models that passed 3 hands had more faults and problems than was worth spending the money required for such a cheap car. People expected more and the equipment on the Ka was stingy and basic. It didn't help that it was considered a girly car and suitable only for handbags. The sexist sentiment repelled men with a hint of uncertainty about their masculinity and with the cars faulting and breaking down, it wasn't uncommon to see a female stood at the side of the road at rush hour with a broken down ford Ka. They relaunched but it didn't work. Ford confused buyers looking for a small car. Other cars became safer and thus larger and male and female buyers gravitated towards the newer Fiesta hatchbacks instead. Leaving the ford Ka as a slow plodding granny car or a single late-middle aged woman's car who reuses her Hessian tote bags and lives with a cat and only used it to take tom to the vet or shop at Marks and Spencers.
