What happens when you combine country with rap? you get CRAP! And apparently crap that the general public AND music critics lapped up in droves.

It definitely feels like every pop musician wants to be the next Michael Jackson or Madonna, without fully grasping why they were so famous and beloved to begin with.

Old Town Road isn't anything groundbreaking, but I really think the hatred for it is forced. It's a gay black dude making a country rap crossover novelty song, that samples a Nine Inch Nails song (of all things!), by a gay black dude, which has BILLY RAY CYRUS on the remix. And Trent Reznor's fine with it! I'd rather hear THAT than fucking Dance Monkey to be honest. Idk I just disagree with the video, it's an interesting perspective to hear though.

I personally despite the Billy Ray Cyrus feature. Hearing this dude go full "how do you do, fellow kids?" and sing about "baby got a sports bra", sounding like he ran to the studio, made me question my existence. I also find the song's overall gimmick unappealing, it just seems like a kindergartner who doesn't listen to country trying to write a country song, Lil Nas X himself sounds like a lame vocalist who thinks he sounds cool, and I think the song is just annoying overall. I just don't see the appeal. I've also never heard a bro country or country rap song that I've loved, most of which I've immensely disliked.

I remember when this song was everywhere. You couldn’t escape it. Crazy to think it’s been five years. Plus, I don’t think music has evolved much ever since. I feel the landscape is in the same garbage spot that it was in five years ago.

In my opinion, the reason why modern country and rap are trash is because music industries are trying too hard to make it a new pop thing and trying to appeal to everyone instead of just having it appeal to intended audience. The music industry nowadays is only concerned about making money instead of artistic expression. Probably why the Disney corporation is falling apart too.

I will admit that Old Town Road has aged horribly as a song. It was fun to listen to at the time-but only AT THE TIME. It’s kind of like the Disco Duck of the late 2010’s: Gimmicky as hell and very much of the time.

As a Beatdown HC fan, I'm good where I'm at. Haven't felt the need to get with mainstream music since my very birth, I've always stuck to what I like. Hell, I listen to some of the hardest metal and hardcore, but I also listen Blue Archive (gacha anime game, actually really well written story, I recommend) music. But also being in the hardcore scene, specifically beatdown HC, it feels like true liberation, no one to tell us what to make or say, we just speak our minds and if someone has a problem with it, it's fuck them. Here's a quote from Facewreck that I think truly defines the beatdown HC scene, "Even when my body gives way "Eternal pit I will never betray "And even though the odds may outweigh "From this pit I will never stray" --AJ Rassau of Facewreck

I’ll never get critics overrating the crap out of stuff that’s either painfully average, poor, or completely unlistenable. It feels like that’s been happening since the late ‘10s. It happened with Old Town Road, it happened with Billie Eilish, it happened with WAP, it happened with Olivia Rodrigo, etc. Once you listen to the people that other people won’t shut up about, it ends up being listened to once and never gone back to it ever again for me. Standards have become lower ever since 2016. Have been making me question why I’m still a music fan.

I'm commenting primarily for the algorithm, but I will simply say that I cannot believe it was five years ago that this song was popular. I remember hearing it everywhere, and it was anything if not irritating, almost to the same degree that songs like "Dance Monkey" were. I'm glad it died, and I'm glad people don't talk much about Lil Nas X anymore - for now.

Why is your character's head so small? All I can think of looking at it now is that it looks like the pinhead puppet from the puppet master movies.

Hey Slayercoon, the structure of this video is flipped. You go into the critics' opinions on this song, before making your argument on why it's bad. I sympathize more with the critics during that section because at that point in the video, their opinions seem more valid.

Have to say that I agree. I just don't understand how this song got so popular. It's literal earworm shovelware trash (although that might just be my bias against all country music talking), and I can't help but beat my head against the nearest wall/table every time I hear it come on. And coming from a 2000s/2010s kid who was still in school when Old Town Road came out, that's saying something.

It’s sad what’s become of popular music in general, not just with “Old Town Road” and such, since practically 1999 (for me, personally). Just saying.

The 1996 telecommunications act may have greatly contributed to music's downfall, especially the death of rock radio.

Is it just me or am I the only one that Dream's Mask song and his music video is the 2020s version of Bewitched by Blood On The Dance Floor? Because both of them are terrible songs with a laughably bad music video that was loved by fans/stans but criticized and mocked by everyone that was also made by a well-known person who is majorly hated by everyone yet been loved by fans/stans. And both of those songs even came out between 10 years. It's a bit uncanny to think about it.

If you want a track that's talented and great, something that is good and quality that will please you, I'd suggest that you try out the song "Granite" by Pendulum, it's a great song that I think you'll enjoy and like, also here's my take on Old Town Road: I do not like the song at all but the remixes make it much more tolerable to listen to, nothing about the original song is really good, also I agree that it's a dumpster fire.

i'm curious what's your opinion on 80s era madonna
@Slayercoon666
@Slayercoon666 3 ай бұрын
I have a high tolerance for 80s cheese and do enjoy some of her songs from that era, but I also acknowledge that she pretty much invented the whole modern female pop diva thing that's been worn into the ground for decades now. I can also understand why a music fan at the time would dislike her.

Guess I'm lucky because I barely even heard of this song, outside of a few TikTok shorts. Probably because I was too busy listening to VGM then to actual mainstream music. Anyway, Slayer, when are you gonna review Ridge Racer V?

I think this may have been the one pop song that I successfully managed to evade when it was on. I listened to my Spotify most of the time, my friends and family never listened to it, and the only time I DID hear it was from a Kidz Bop commercial. Still thankful I never heard it.

The 2010s peaked in 2011-2012, and honestly started going downhill after Gangnam Style or Vine, in my opinion at least.

I’d take 1995 - 1999 over the 2017 - 2019 era any day of the week. There’s bad music, yes, but at least doesn’t go too far as to make me gouge my ears out and lose faith in humanity.

Honestly, it’s hit and miss after the early 90’s. Almost every year from 1980 to 1989 has something that’s likable, 1990 to about 1993 has something that’s likable and enjoyable to listen to as well but not in as of large numbers in the 1980’s. Anything after 1994? Can’t really think of anything after that’s enjoyable to listen to, a few blips of good hits (stuff that went underground as well) but otherwise was hit and miss and spotty at best. Don’t think we we’ll see anything good for awhile since we live in a world where it’s quantity vs quality these days.
