Was out in the Utah west desert and came across an old railroad caboose. Union Pacific Train Caboose.

Neat find, the end clip of it being on a train explains why its there. Its because the operations they do requires a shoving platform. Technically thats what the caboose would be referred to as currently, a shoving platform. Which is basically just something a conductor can use to stand on and use as shelter if theres a storm, while the locomotives push the train. Its required that theres a conductor at the end of a shoving train, who has radio communication with the engineer on what to do. (go fast, go slow, stop, etc) If there wasnt a shoving platform, the conductor would have to hold onto the end of the last freight car and if its a long shove move, that can be tiring and of course if theres a storm, would be quite uncomfortable being wet. Cabooses like the one you saw, the only things they make sure that works, is that it still rolls safely and the air brakes works. Its not used as full caboose like 30ish+ years ago with employees sleeping in it and doing paperwork, they just keep it in use for the convenience of the conductor when shoving. After looking on Google maps, the track goes to a magnesium plant about 10 miles North of there, which could be about 20 or so minutes of hanging onto the end of a freight car if there wasnt a shoving platform. Hopefully this explains everything. Nice video of the showing the inside and the surrouding area

Thanks for the information. I was curious why it was there as tracks and caboose wheels obviously show recent use. makes perfect sense!
@yixnorb59716 жыл бұрын
Why can't they just use a backup camera? If they still always used cabooses, they wouldn't have to do this.
@onrr17266 жыл бұрын
can't have a camera on the ass end because the railroad may have to push a long cut of cars X number of mile(s) or more down a siding or on a main line over grade crossings and or in industrial parks where there may not be a run around track.
@thomasboese37936 жыл бұрын
I didn’t consider the shoving platform idea before, I like it. My first thought was its being used as a non-hazardous car between the locomotive and the loaded hazardous cars. Looked at Google Maps and there are over 200 rail cars at the end of the line. Most are tank cars and most tank cars are used to transport hazardous loads. Going to wait and see if some rail-fan videos the push-pull operations of the branch.

Not a very well taken care of shelter. If it was mine it would be emaculate.

I love this video; while it's sad to see that old caboose in such disrepair, at least I can appreciate the quiet and solitude of its location. I also enjoyed the quiet tune you used in the video and would like to know more about it. Thank you for posting this video, I really enjoyed it.

Ah, the old CA-11 caboose. For those interested, the big red P on the bay window stands for "pool". This is an indication of a romanticized, bygone era where the conductor had his own caboose. Wherever the conductor went, so did his caboose. But after a while, the railroads found that it was cheaper to just have one caboose for any train that had a need for one. That P means they all share the same caboose now.
@capnhawk515 жыл бұрын
The "P" also provides instant differentiation between a mainline caboose and a local. Working out of U.P.'s East Los Angeles yard, there were stripped down cabooses that were used on trains destined for Anaheim, San Pedro, and the San Fernando Valley.

It's a show of how things never stay the same and changes aren't always for the better. As I get older and my family gets smaller, I long for a time machine to go back to when everything was good and everyone I cared about was still here.

This is UP25821, a class CA-11 caboose built in the 1970's. Parked just north of the wye with the UP main, she appears to be used as a shoving platform to switch cars on that stretch of track known as the Rowley Branch. There is a large US Magnesium facility 10.7 miles to the north. She was gorgeous in her heyday! www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=241111

for those not old enough to remember,,,,,,,,,,,, many cabooses had a belt, driven off the axle, which turned a generator for electricity. thus a battery was needed when train is not moving.
@onrr17266 жыл бұрын
jeffrey mcfadden the option of belt driven generators off the axle were more popular on Western roads more so than on Eastern roads where coal stoves lasted a bit longer. Interestingly belt driven generators / batteries charged off the axles are still in heavy use in Ukraine, and Belarus on passenger cars.

I saw a coyote chasing a jack rabbit over here in New Mexico last month and it was so hot they were both just walking. A lot of the older cabooses had bunks and chairs and some were called assigned cabooses with the Conductor having his own assigned caboose.

I met people in Denver who bought Rio Grande cabooses, fixed them up real nice as a kids play area, or a Party place, and in one case a guest house. They were in excellent shape, having been taken out of service so there was no broken glass, or anything destroyed inside just a little tagging on the outside. If you had any interest in this caboose I bet you can buy it for very little. Then pull it onto and flatbed, take it to your property prepared with a strip of track. And you'll have .something nice. Take out all the appliances, give it power from your home lines, put in 220/120 lines and plugs and you can .do anything you wish. I like the extra bedroom part of it.

There is a place in Southern Utah called Caboose Village where they have purchased a bunch of cabooses and converted them into hotel style rooms that are very nice. I also have a video about this caboose village on this channel. Take Care

This caboose is a total disgrace. If I owned it I would put it back into its original glory. And yes I worked for the Union Pacific way back in 1965 and they kept them in great shape. There nothing like riding a caboose on the end of a long train.
@mattalbrecht74715 жыл бұрын
@reverse thrust i have heard from other videos that both the engineer and caboose had VHF radios which used the wires on the telephone poles that went along side the tracks as their antenna. maybe lights (lanterns) and flags otherwise

I'm no train expert, but in hopes of shedding a little light on this, I am familiar with the area and what goes on around it. This is located 69 miles or so west of Salt Lake City, Utah along I80, just south of a almost abandoned town of Delle. (The only gas station between Salt Lake and the Nevada border on I80). In this area (The West Desert) are many abandoned towns, mostly mining c1900's as well as many hazardous chemical intallations, both private and military. Dugway Proving Grounds, Tooele Army Depot, etc...UP also has a major incinarator for toxic hazardous things like transformers, etc....There are many many wyes that run off of the UP line that runs parallel to I80 between SLC and Nevada that go to a number of "restricted access" type areas

I would say it is acting a temporary buffer stop and or a derailer. Should there be a runaway , the runaway is switched to the line the old caboose is on .Should there be a fire or chemical leak from the resulting pile up ,it is as far away from human habitation as possible .
@Sam_Green____41146 жыл бұрын
I would say this would be its secondary function .the end of the video shows its primary function! that being a platform for a train employee to ride on as a look out for the driver as the chemical wagons are propelled backwards into the factory because the locomotives are on the other end of the train .

It's a "shoving platform" for trains that have to back up that line to the U.S. Magnesium plant ten miles to the north (goo.gl/maps/s2iQRLQprU22). They park the shoving platform near the wye to the mainline, where it waits until the next train has business at the magnesium plant. I was heading west on I-80. Then I took the Delle exit, also known as Delle City Station (Gas Station). The caboose was located on the northside of I-80 and east of the gas station. Summertime there is very hot. Example - Today (July 5th) it will be 103° F.
@GMTX-kg8ep7 жыл бұрын
RoadTrippinNomad obviously they'd have to restore this to operate it for real but, it's in way better shape than you would expect it to be. I was expecting this to be ripped out like, nothing left except for rust and the annoying profanity on the walls you mentioned! As far as I know, they're not used regularly but, some local shipment trains still use them so that the assistant engineer can ride it going backwards so that they can watch over the track and check the switches. But, then again, they can of course just use a back locomotive or even get a car where they can hang on. Or if they're carrying hazardous materials, these are lifesavers.

could be UP management found a loop hole in the Union Rules by welding the door shut it makes the car unusable for nothing more than a shoving platform. It used to be that caboose crews made a few more dollars than the guys in the locomotive. What surprises me most is that UP did not plate over the windows and weld the end doors shut which is what I got used to seeing on a lot of former MoPac transfer cabooses that UP has out in Oklahoma.
@morg526 жыл бұрын
I just figured they closed off the toilets because without the service capacity to keep them cleaned out, they would get used to beyond reason by trespassers and be a royal pain to deal with hygenically.

the fines vary too from state to state. I hear Virginia trespassing on Railroad Tracks runs as high as $5,000.00 for first time offenders while in Pennsylvania it's around $1,000.00 and Oklahoma $250.00. In New York State the Delaware and Hudson skips the ticket shit and arrests people no questions asked not sure how NS and CSX deal with people there. Trespassing on Railroad property in Canada is a Class II felony and 1 - 6 months jail time.
