UN Decade of Healthy Ageing

UN Decade of Healthy Ageing

Күн бұрын

In 2021, groups of older people from Canada, Jordan and Togo were involved in a project to ensure their voices were heard from the start of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030). This project used the participatory video methodology to strengthen the meaningful engagement of older people in the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing's activities. Older people brought their experience, perspectives and expertise to find solutions to issues that matter to them. The group of older people from Amman, Jordan, addressed these issues in a film made by themselves.
Jordan is an Arab nation on the east bank of the Jordan River. Jordan has a population of 10.2 million people, hosting 702,506 refugees and 4,870 asylum-seekers. The project took place in its capital, Amman, a large, sprawling city with a mix of modern commercial and residential buildings and ancient monuments. Some of the most common issues that older people face in Amman are related to living in the city. For example, transportation services are not friendly for older people, and distances are far, making it challenging to move around independently. Older people from Amman also highlighted the lack of access to proper health services, poor medical supplies and financial assistance. Watch the entire film to hear more recommendations and insights into what older people need to age better in Jordan.

=====
The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) envisions a world where all people can live long, healthy lives. To make this vision a reality, stakeholders need access to a wide range of knowledge produced across disciplines, sectors, stakeholders, and regions. Hearing and amplifying the voices of older people is critical to the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing's success. Older people are agents of change, knowledge holders, employees, workers, carers, volunteers, service beneficiaries, consumers, and much more. It is time to listen to what older people worldwide have to say about healthy ageing.
Participatory video is a visual media tool that uses a set of techniques to explore issues and mobilize people to tell their stories and take collective action. This powerful and creative process puts older people at the centre of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing. Participatory video showcases one way to amplify the voices of diverse older people and strengthen their meaningful engagement in the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing's activities.
