Film: Gone With The Wind (1939)
Directed by: George Cukor
Composed by: Max Steiner
Players: Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Thomas Mitchell.
This movie holds so many vivid memories for me from may stages of my life, and with those memories is this music. I'd rate both the movie and its music at 5/5.

The top and most unforgetable movie I've ever seen. Familiarity does not make it any less attractive. I've seen it over a dozen times The music Steiner wrote fits exactly.!!!

I have studied and loved and admired this intriguing novel and its movie counterpart for three-fourths of my adult life. The grandeur of the film is astoundingly announced with the main title, "Tara's Theme," which never fails to make me stop dead in my tracks if I hear it in a department store or elevator. I sat up late as a teenager reading the book, fascinated with the characters and the story Margaret Mitchell had written with such clarity. I never knew then that when it was first published, Margaret Mitchell got letters from children complaining that their grandparents would not let them quit reading the book until they found out if Scarlett made it home to Tara! "I'll think about it tomorrow!" has become my day-to-day philosophy....

That Max Steiner only received three Oscars for his over 300 film scores (and did not win for this, his greatest) is one of the shames of the industry.

The best movie of all time. I love Gone With The Wind. I was 15 when I first saw it at the pictures in Malvern. I loved everything about it. Who could forget Mammy sticking her head out of the upstairs window yelling out "Come on in Miss Scarlet before you catch your death of dampness" She was such a presence. I won't think about that now, I'll think about that tomorrow. The musical score is so beautiful, sad, serene, wistful, joyous and above all, the most well loved of all movie scores. The colours, the clothing, passions and temperaments. Sadly, there are no more Vivien Leighs and no more Clark Gables. With his sardonic look and raised eyebrow, the "Frankly my dear, I don't gives damn!" will go down in history as the most quotable quote.

The movie does not fail in the end! In fact, its ending is still one of the most famous endings on film; this is not because it is crappy, but rather because it is well-done and memorable. This movie is a classic for a reason, not because it is over-rated! Gone With The Wind is a compelling character study of epic proportions, and while it has minute flaws I still cannot see any that are even half as big as the ones you think are there. Oh well, to each his own opinion! :)

Both Titanic AND Gone With The Wind had their glorious/ soap opera sides. That does not diminish either movie. I grew up in a family that loved Gone With The Wind, and so, naturally, I gravitate toward Rhett and Scarlett. Not dissing Titanic at all. In its own way, it's a classic, too!

This film is amazing! The soundtrack is brilliant!I love the customs, the atmosphere, the actors, the plot. Scarlet is so beautiful .However, it is said that this movie is ratsistic and I agree partly with this. But we have to remember that Mamy , Scarlet's baby siter won an Oscar for this role and she was black .More specifically she was the first black actor who won an Oscar. In addition some people think that it is a very big movie . I think is great and for this reason the duration is not a problem .Is not just a good classic movie is an epic movie

@oldmoviemusic I agree. Although, in the book Scarlett is a total anti-heroine, and she's completely aware that she does not feel identified with the "southern belle" image at all. She knows all the way that her "social behaviour" is just a pose. Margaret Mitchell really depictured one of the most complex characters I've ever read. A great novel, a great movie.

@basilhenriques Yes, I realise that there is no person in the film of the name Tara (although Tara the plantation is most certainly a character). However, over time the title has adopted the extra possessive s. I like it this way, and I'm sorry, but I posted the video. Thank you for your comment though.

Tara, the plantation, is as much a character in the film as any person. It is the base of the entire story. Steiner knew it and wrote it as such. That's the basis of his genius.

In 1939, in just a few months, there were released some of the greatest movies ever: Citizen Kane, The Wizard of Oz, Of Mice and Men, and of course: Gone With the Wind. Really amazing when you think about it. Could a movie like "Gone With the Wind" be made today? When you consider it, it was a HUGE risk back in 1939. Hollywood just doesn't have the creativity and DARING to do anything worthwhile today. Today's movies are all deriviative and uninspired.

I really like Titanic, and it was my favorite movie at one time too, but the film is to me soap-opera-ish because of the love story and the lack of complexity within it. This isn't an insult, I love Jack & Rose, but if you look at how their relationships unfolds, with the class disapproval, the mean fiancee, it all has a soap opera feel to it in some ways. That doesn't have to be a bad thing - part of Titanic's charm is that is does it very, very well! Hopefully that clarified what I meant! :)

"All About Eve" is a terrific film, and not only because of its dialogue. "Gone With the Wind" isnt a bad film because it has lousy dialogue, but because it has a lousy scenario that reeks of a déclassé antebellum "All My Children". The situations and character entanglements are straight out of Soap Opera 101, and while Clark Gable gave a terrific performance, I could never understand what he saw in Scarlett. Hes Clark Gable, after all! He can have any woman he wants!

Titanic is most certainly a cinematic soap opera, however GWTW is not at all! I just watched it on the big scrreen for it 70th anniversary release and I was struck by how complex a movie it is. The character of Scarlett represents the idea of the South, her continuous 'love' for Ashley is her clinging to the past, and the whole movie is very complex. Indeed, it is not a soap opera at all.

@LLJtbone It’s in the Mario Puzo novel. Coppola, being the great filmmaker that he was, was wise enough to remove such lurid and pointless material. In other words, a great filmmaker can occasionally improve on a bad novel. It’s just that David O. Selznick wasn’t half the filmmaker that Francis Ford Coppola was.

today people brag about pictures making billions of dollars and call it the highest grossing film. That may be true. However, for box office receipts, don’t forget this movie came out when a movie was around $0.10. I read $390 million. Simple math (divide that by $0.10) get you $3.9 to the 9th power. That is a lot of zeros of people who saw this movie.

@LLJtbone The film’s problem is that the source material bogs it down. The novel isn’t even as good as a typical episode of “All My Children” and the film does little to rise above it. Sometimes, a great film can come from a crappy novel-think “The Godfather”, but that’s because Francis Ford Coppola smartly removed some of the novel’s silliness-such as the girl with the deformed pussy.

The script is the reason the movie fails in the end. It certainly is a fifth-rate soap opera especially in the 2nd half. The 4-hour running time doesnt help much either. Simply painting gold over something doesnt increase its value. "Gone With the Wind" is painted gold, with great production values, but still a lousy film, although not a terrible one.
