Old School Fire Alarms

Old School Fire Alarms

Күн бұрын

Back in 2008, Pfeiffer Elementary School's fire alarm system was one of the very first I filmed for my You Tube channel and website, Old School Fire Alarms. Construction of Pfeiffer began in 1917 and was completed and dedicated in 1919. The school was named after two brothers, Jacob and William Pfeiffer, who donated the land the school is built on. The school was originally known as, "Overlook", named after the land it was built on. It wasn't until 1919 that the school was dedicated and renamed, Pfeiffer School.
When the school was first built, a pull rod fire alarm system, using 10 inch manual trip bells was installed. In 1959 the system was updated and automated with an Autocall fire alarm control panel, using Vibratone horns as the signaling devices. The code on the control panel is the Cadence Marching Code 4-4-4-4. It was designed to assure a quick and orderly evacuation of any building.
The school as of this writing is 105 years old and was built at a time when many school buildings of this caliber were used as fallout shelters, especially during World War II. This school and fire alarm system have endured the test of time, and are examples of fine craftmanship when things were built to last.

Wheelock is another great company that makes fire alarm/signaling hardware and they have been around since the early 1900's. @@OldSchoolFireAlarms That's so cool! I wonder how it still complies with modern Fire alarm system codes, is there a way you can do some kind of video on that?
@OldSchoolFireAlarms
@OldSchoolFireAlarms 2 жыл бұрын
@@ukfireenthusiast2301Good question and the answer is quite simple. This particular fire alarm system, as with many other older systems in old schools, DOES NOT comply with today's fire alarm regulations and/or codes. It is due to what is legally known as the "Grandfather clause" that allows public schools to continue using their old fire alarm systems. As long as they (the fire alarms) are still in good working order, the schools are allowed to keep using them. I know it sounds crazy but it is true. I would say that 98% of the fire alarm systems you see in my videos do not comply with current codes and regulations. Only when a new school is built or an older school upgrades their fire alarm system does the school district need to comply with the most current regulations/codes. Since this is a legal issue, doing a video on this particular topic would be boring for most people. There just isn't a whole lot of material to do such a video. If you want more information, I would research, Grandfather clauses, regarding legal use.

Finally: one school you visit that _isn't_ scheduled for demolition sometime in the future (not yet anyway). Nice to see the original fire alarm system still serving the school well, though if the building _is_ threatened with demolition in the future, I *implore* you to save _everything_ from the system. 4:29 I believe smoke detectors were not yet a thing at the time of this panel's manufacture & installation: the ionization smoke detector was developed around the mid 1960s by Duane D. Pearsall & Stanley Bennett Peterson of Statitrol Corporation, while the photoelectric smoke detector was developed around the early 1970s by Donald Steele & Robert Emmark of ESL (Electro Signal Lab). One interesting thing about those supposedly-Autocall-rebranded Federal Signal Vibratones; they appear to have _two_ PR single projectors on them, connected by some kind of "dual mounting piece", even though Federal Signal probably made a "PR2" dual projector at the time as well.
@OldSchoolFireAlarms
@OldSchoolFireAlarms 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and your comments. Actually, the first smoke detectors have been around since the late 1890's. George Andrew Darby patented the first heat and smoke detector in 1902 in Birmingham, England. The first commercial smoke detector was introduced in the United States in 1951 and was ionization technology. Autocall, Edwards, Fire-Lite, and several other companies all made heat and/or temp thermal detectors going back into the 1940's.
@TheCarson116
@TheCarson116 2 жыл бұрын
@@OldSchoolFireAlarms Yes, I know heat detectors were a thing decades before smoke detectors were, but when it comes to Darby's detector; it might have been invented in 1902, but it might not have started being used right away (on top of that I'm going by US fire protection history of course). Never heard of a 1950s-era smoke detector though, especially as neither modern-day detection principle (ionization & photoelectric) had been invented yet.
@OldSchoolFireAlarms

@@TheCarson116 There is a lot of information and history about both heat and smoke detectors. Just Google it if you haven't already. Are any of the old fallout shelter supplies still stashed away in the basement?

No. This building is no longer used as a Fallout shelter.

@@OldSchoolFireAlarms That makes sense. All the buildings I've been to that once had fallout shelters were emptied long ago. I've found a few Civil Defense water drums they forgot to throw out, during fire inspections.

Why are there trip bells?
@OldSchoolFireAlarms
@OldSchoolFireAlarms Жыл бұрын
When the school was first built in 1919, trip bells were originally installed as the fire alarm system. In the 1950's the system was updated with an electric Autocall fire alarm system. The trip bells were left in place in case of an electrical outage.

@@OldSchoolFireAlarms so the bell would ding once and everyone would know to evacuate, or would someone be there to repeatedly pull it down and up?
@OldSchoolFireAlarms
@OldSchoolFireAlarms Жыл бұрын
@@Northern_Fire_Security Anyone could activate the pull rod. For every pull of the rod, the trip bell on each floor would ring. You can pull the rod as many times as you want. For a fire drill the rod was usually pulled for about 10 to 20 seconds ringing the bell at least 10 times. Again, this was before electric fire alarms were commercially available.
