My dad was in the Vietnam war as well( but to us Hmong people it's known as the Secret War). He was recruited by the CIA to draw maps of the jungle of Laos to help the Americans gain entrance to Vietnam. Unfortunately, my dad died by suicide last year. He had depression, ptsd, and delusions. It's my first time hearing this song/seeing this video and I was bawling with you! Thank you for your dads service. ❣️

“I only served in Bosnia” Don’t ever say that shit man. Many of us “only served” in Bosnia, Haiti, Somalia, etc in the 90s. We saw and did shit no human should ever have to see or do. And just because our government didn’t label it a war, doesn’t diminish what we went through. Thank you for your service. You signed the blank check, you are a hero my friend. Period!

Last October, I happened to be heading home from an event and while waiting to cross the street I noticed a guy with a 3rd Marines hat, with tears in his eyes. I looked at him and he quickly looked away as he wiped a tear from his eye and pretended as if I didn't see it. I asked him if everything was all right. He asked why I was asking. I told him I've only seen a Marine cry at a funeral for a fellow Marine and while not a Marine myself (US Army Veteran) I had served along side Marines and recognized his patch. We spoke on that bridge for over an hour and he informed me he was on his way to commit suicide (jumping off the bridge into the river) and was sad noone would miss him. I told him that I'm a Veteran and that I'd miss him. He broke down crying and hugged me. I put him in contact with a friend who works with 22 Until None and got him help. He has since gotten treatment for his depression, PTSD and alchohol abuse. I still regularly check up on him even though he moved back to San Diego. The point being you never know when a simple kind word can literally save someone's life.

Brother in Arms, when people tell me "Thank you for your service," I always reply "If you want to thank veterans, stop voting for the people who make more of us"

I was born 10th of December 1991 in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina. Thanks to men like you, my mother was able to escape to Sweden with me. I lost my family because of military service. My wife cheated and then used my training against me in court to say I was a dangerous parent. I ended up homeless in Seattle and about to end it all one night staying with a friend. I literally owe my life to Rascal Flatts of all things. One of their songs stopped me from completing the task. I have struggled every day since, but I make it work and continue to fight for a good life nowadays. Now I tried to help as many veterans as I can whenever I can. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL & the war to protect the 22% is an uphill battle. Hug a veteran whenever you can.

My mom is a Desert Storm/ Desert Shield Vet. I cried when I saw this video, my mom cried when I shared it with her too. There's no such thing as "only serving" though, anyone willing to sign that blank check to our military deserve all the respect in the world. There is two stickers that say everything about it as far as I'm concerned "Don't hate the Soldier, Hate the war" and "If you can't stand behind our soldiers feel free to stand in front of them." When i was sixteen i met a veitnam vet at walmart. I walked up to him shook his hand and said thank you for your service. I told him that if he didnt hear it when he came home, welcome home. He broke down crying. From that moment on we became friends. I learned he lived in my town. I rode past his house every day delivering papers. After that day when i was done delivering i would go sit with him on his porch and talk with him. At first it was just the weather and what the farmers were doing and how school was for me. After a little while he started talking to me about his tour in nam. I heard things no 16 year old kid should hear. He passed the year i graduated. I was one of very few who went to his funeral. Afterwards his lovely wife asked to see me. She told me i was the only one he would talk to about his service. He refused to talk to a shrink the people at the va. Nobody. But he talked to me. Ptsd is real and it hurts more than the soldier who has it. I respected that man. And respect all those past and present who chose to wear the uniform and keep us safe. My buddy came back from iraq and was so messed up from what he saw and had to do he drank and drank. We tried to get him to go to rehab and talk to someone. He went and a week later he was on the streets. We have no idea what happend to him. I hope he found help. We never found him. We need to do more for those who come back broken. Theres no other word for it. When they come back like that, something in their brain is telling them its wrong. We need to do more to help them fix themselves and get better. The pstd never really goes away. But talking with someone really does help. If you are struggling with ptsd then find someone who is willing to listen.

I'm a combat veteran of the US Marine corps who was in both takings of Fallujah. I was a scout sniper. I love this song but this is the first time I've seen this video and I'm over here in tears. My husband is a disabled veteran. I got him a meet n greet with FFDP before the show we went to in Charleston. He shook their hands and I handed them a letter to read that I found that my husband wrote with the intent on sending it to them... we were all in tears after that letter and they all hugged him and dedicated the song to him during the show. He was standing there silently, with tears running down his face while it played. One of the most amazing experiences ever. We need to do better for our veterans. PTSD isn't something that just goes away. We have to create a better program to help them when they finally come home and when they finally get out of the service. I once thanked a Vietnam veteran for his service and he said to me, "next time you see a Vietnam vet, tell him welcome home, because when we came home we were spit on and never told that" it hit so strongly because I saw what the ptsd and memories did to my grandfather. Im a vet myself, served 4 yrs active 4 yrs guard in the army as an HVAC tech. I never deployed but I had many friends who I considered brothers and sisters that deployed and came back changed. I try my best to be there for them no matter what because I know that if it was me, they'd do the same. We're a family, and I'll always fight for my family.

I love this song, but it always stirs up emotions. I served in Afghanistan, and I've lost more brothers since we've been home than we did over there. I get mad now when I get notified of another brother who chooses a permanent solution to a temporary problem. One of my best friends took his life while his fiancé went to the store, and she was pregnant with his daughter. She came home and found him, and his daughter will never know him. I have many others who left their wives and children behind. Breaks my heart.

I lost my best friend after she survived 3 tours, 2 in Afghanistan and 1 more in Iraq, her husband cheated on her and left her. She did make it home but 6 months after she got her DD214 then she killed herself 9 months later from deep deep depression. I miss her so much and wish I could have helped her more. RIP Stacey Langdon.

I'm a disabled Army vet. I watched this video for the first time with my wife in the room and I started choking up,it was the first time she ever saw me cry.

I remember when our Vietnam Veterans were coming home. I could not understand why they were treated so horribly. They were heroes to me as a young girl. I have always had them all in my heart. I ended up working at a VA hospital and I got to know quite a few of My Soldiers. The VA back then was a truly horrific place for our brave heroes to have to go to. The military changed my Dad from what my family has told me. He went in a funny, loving 17 year old and came back with his demons. I was always afraid of him but at the same time I was very protective of him. I pray all the time for all of you and I hate what people are doing with our freedoms that you guys and girls fought so hard to protect. I hate every warmongering politician for sending innocent brave boys and girls to war. God bless every one of you.

Same for me. I was homeless for three years in Los Angeles. And by the grace of someone in the sky. I was out panning in front of a Vons grocery store and the manager, Carlos. He called me into the store helped me make a resume and get a job as a courtesy clerk and now I’m a deli clerk in the Rancho Santa Margarita Pavilions and about to get my first house. There is some good people out there. And I’m still thankful for what that man gave me. Don’t be ashamed to cry man. Be proud of what you succeeded in and good things will come out of this life we live. Just gotta keep strong. Don’t be afraid to cry bro. That’s what makes us human and embrace that. 21yrs (ret) Navy fleet/Seabees. And here we are 3+ years after this video, and we now have millions of "asylum seekers" getting money, food, and Healthcare while our Vets are still suffering and dying in the streets.

Last year my squad leader committed suicide.. he suffered from PTSD because he saw combat. He was such a funny guy and I remember having long talks with him at our unit about his mental health issues, his love life and basically everything, he just loved to talk. He could call to check up on his squad if anything crazy went down, and you'd end up on the phone for hours lol. My husband was planning on inviting him over to our house for dinner when the covid lock downs started. We always said once the lock downs were over we'd have him over for a bbq.. but he was found dead in his home in July 2020. We couldn't even have a proper memorial for him. It was all virtual. Everyone loved him, had great stores, and he got along with anyone. He will always be missed.

Im a disabled Army tank commander. When I was released I was only able to collect unemployment benefits for HALF of the amount of citizens benefits. It took over 5 years to finally collect Social Security and VA benefits. Its absurd!!!!

Thank you! I am a 90's vet as well, no PTSD but I got hit with depression due to chronic back pain and the most helpful thing there is for me is to talk to other vets who are struggling as well. We all have that sense of comradery that brings us together from our service and connects us. What you did during your time in the army is awesome, you helped so many people and that is such a noble thing. Your volunteer work also speaks very highly of your character. My best friend served in the United States Army in Iraq. I was with my best friend the night he killed himself. He always told us he'd die before he went back to the VA. That night we were all laughing and having fun when he got up and went inside, a few moments later we heard the gun shot. I hate that I can remember that night better than any of the other memories with him. Even the smell I can't forget it, and on really rough days it comes back. I can't count the times I've been out in public and saw someone and wanted to run up to them because I thought it was him. Reality kicks back in and it all comes crashing back, it's never going to be him. The soldier I thought so much of, my hero isn't coming back. I remember being so mad at him and I wanted to shake him and scream, "Why?! Why did you do this?!" I'm never going to get an answer to that question. I still get angry at people when they say to me "He's in a better place now" or "At least he's not hurting anymore" this is not what I want to hear. I know they mean well and they are trying to be sympathetic but when they say things like that I interpret it as "this was his only choice, what he did was right and you need to get over it". I know that's not what they're saying and I know I shouldn't get mad, but it still hurts and it's hard sometimes.

I served in the army from 2000-03. Did a tour in Iraq. When I got out, I experienced nearly everything in this video. I was homeless for a number of years, lost my wife and kids. My father is a marine vet that served in Vietnam, and dealt with a lot of these issues as well. This song always makes me breakdown in tears. And that's ok.

I sob every time he recognizes him. My dad has PTSD and because of this we almost lost our house and my parents did everything but sign the divorce papers. I’m 24 now and my ptsd/my dad tribute tattoo I have has the lyrics to this song on it “I’m no hero and I’m not made of stone” because after my dad started treatment and got a service dog he was able to finally open up and my dad has always said “I don’t feel like a hero” and one day a few month after he started treatment we were just rocking out and this song came on and it was the first time I saw my daddy cry. I have never served. I can never understand but I can feel. And boy does this song, and what I see on our free streets paid for in blood, make me feel. I can't do much, I don't make enough money to change some ones life with a check. I cannot donate to a food bank or veterans programs. "You Know me, You saved my life." That part gets me every time. I served in the Navy from 2001 to 2006 and afterwards worked for the Army and DoD for another 14 years. I did my 20 both as a sailor and civilian. I took an oath and it is something I still hold true today. I didn't see direct combat but I seen things that cannot be unseen, it has made a mark on my being. My time has changed who I am, made me a different person from when I entered. Not all of it good, thankfully not all of it is bad either. To all my fellow veterans, thank you for serving with me, thank you for keeping my family safe.

My uncle was a Vietnam vet, and the rare time he spoke about it he said what hurt the most was coming home and being spit on and being called a baby killer, (he was drafted) but people love to hate. I wish I knew more but he never spoke about what happened and lived in Washington state in a cabin he built, to get away from the world R.I.P uncle **** I wish I could have spoken to you as a man, not your brothers little kid...but by the time I was old enough to understand your pain you were gone, and all I have is a few anecdotes and the card you sent me at 13 that said now your grown give em hell, and I hope you know 20 years later I still read that and hope you'd be proud of the life I've lived

My dad fought along side you in bosnia. He was field artillery. The guys at the wounded warrior project use my dad's story to help spread awareness of PTSD and the effects it has on homeless vets. I'm a fifty four year old army veteran. I've been in the army twice and the national guard once. I survived desert storm and operation iraqi freedom. I survived a bad divorce which put me in a deep depression! Which in turn, ramped up my anxiety, guilt and loneliness. and I turned to alcohol for twenty two years. I've experienced the rehab's. I am Russian. My grandpa was the 2nd WW veteran. Being small I used to ask him: tell me what was the war like? And, he was saying just this: It was a meat-grinder. Yes, their lifes were grindered, traumatized so much. In Russia they are lucky if there is a supporting family. Otherwise, Veterans of any generation and any war, all of them are on surviving situation. I am so touched with this song. The FFDP is a well known in Russia among veterans specially. These people deserve the world they are your father, your brother your friend, the neighbor down the street. yes they chose this job but the job didn't choose them meaning we all signed up just in case one day something happens and you must now pick up your weapon and focus on doing something that isn't normal. Whatever reason they are not to blame for becoming broken. We joke all the time while we are in comparing branches of service and who thinks who is better. Its funny how that changes when you get out and you run into folks who did exactly what you did but for another branch. It's crazy how quickly brothers in arms can bond with one another we are the only ones who understand. Thank you once again for the video.

When my buddy came back from Iraq in 06 he was a completely different person. I'd watch him light a cigarette and just stare at the flame while he shook... all I could do is keep reminding him he was home and try to be there for him. I could never imagine what our soldiers have been through. So thank you to any veteran reading this for doing what you did and please don't hesitate to reach out for help when you need it.

I served in Silent Service 91-95. Went out for a search/rescue training dive with 1 of my close shipmates who was a qualified Navy diver. We checked the weather and it was G2G, but at 80ft we felt a swift rocking of the currents. We surfaced and were in the middle of a down burst and waves kicked up to 6-8 ft. We locked arms and buddy kicked against the current trying to push us out. No words were said as we both just knew we were f*ck’d if we gave up. 100m from shore we got pulled apart. He was able to ride a wave in, but he saw me get slammed against a rock that was around 20ft tall once the wave pulled back and showed the size of it. The next wave crashed over me like a ton of bricks , sucked me to the bottom of that rock and he thought I was dead. A 3rd wave lifted me up and I hand walked the rock which allowed the wave to launch me into shore a few hundred meters south of his position. I walked up to him with a smile on my face and he gave me one of the biggest bro hugs. Talked to him recently after 20 years and he said he never took the dives for granted after that day because he thought he lost me. I told him he saved my life up to the rock with his superior strength, training, and mental toughness. His response was: “We were brothers and saved each other to that point, but you saved yourself. I saw you get hammered and vanish in a huge wall of water. I thought I lost you.” I never realized his point of view until 20 years later and how deeply that event impacted and stayed with him.

I'm not even a veteran, I just have veterans in my family, and everytime I watch this video I cry. It's such a shame our government sends our soldiers out to fight their wars, risking their lives, and then doesn't take care of our veterans like they should

My father is a combat vet from Vietnam. He never talked about it his whole life. He always had anger issues He finally got the help he needed when my daughter was born he took one look at her and started crying. Now he devotes his time to being a grandfather to all of his 17 grandchildren. HE finally told me that he had guilt for years for coming back alive. But now he knows his purpose was to be here for his grandchildren.

No matter how many times I watch this video it still brings a tear to my eye because I am one of the ones who has fallen through the cracks without help for no better reason than I never seen combat.

I am an italian veteran in service for 25 years ... i fought alongside my american brothers-in-arms in iraq in the battle on the euphrates river ... in the re-conquest of the gullistan valley and many others ... mine soul remained in those places ... but my heart goes out to my American brothers who, upon returning to a normal life, did not get the support and life they deserved after such a great sacrifice ... I send you a big hug my brother .

The little girl with the flowers got me. My daughters mom has my only child convinced I didnt want her while I was serving. 6 years and 2 tours my daughter doesnt know who I am and calls another man dad. I have been talking to her a little bit trying to rebuild something that was taken away from me. I feel that part of the video so hard in my heart. She is what got me through being hit by a mortar in 2010 and she doesnt even know me.

Im a Air Force vet in the UK. First time i heard this song i was in shock after. Experiencing it was one thing, but seeing and hearing the statistics rocks you to your core. Im ashamed of my country and embarrassed to have served the UK. But proud to have served the people of the UK. I wrote a blank cheque for the people, not the corrupt country run by snake fucking politicians.

My dad was drafted to Vietnam. He threw away all of his army things when he came home. I know he lost friends. And he’s only told me stories once when I was around 18. I’m almost 40 now. I’ll never ask him about it again. Anyway. This hit me hard. Thank you, OSN. You’re an inspiration.

I am from Denmark, a veteran, still in the service - 5 deployments in 3 different armed conflicts, among them 2 tours to Helmand as part of the Danish Battle Group Staff in MOB Price 2010 and Lashkar-Gah with TF7 in 2012. This video punches right through the heart ! In Denmark, some of the vets that are struggling the most, are the ones who were deployed to the Balkans in the 90's - they are the ones, that have the most severe cases of PTSD and are struggling today, because back then, PTSD was not reckognized ......... people were told to suck it up !! Some of our Helmand vets are not far behind, but at least they get help and our social security network is probably more tight than a lot of other countries. But as you say .......... it's real, its every day, and it is hurtful, not only for the vet, but also for his or her family and loved ones !! Many vets live in that reality and many struggle !! ANY and EVERY little contribution helps ..... and respect & acknowledgement also goes a long way !

I served over a decade ago. I wasn't a combat vet, and I was one of those guys that joined because I had a) no where to go, b) wanted to go to school and use the GI bill. When I got in, I felt I was slowly being torn apart, despite devoting all of my effort to making rank and taking on more responsibilities. I pushed my ass to the breaking point, until one day that I distinctly remember where my hard effort resulted in a successful attack, ending lives. My feeling at the time was the thought that I looked around the room, and everyone was simply okay with it getting done. I didn't know who these people were that we killed, what the reason was for the attack, and also knew that we used overwhelming force to accomplish the mission. It sat in the back of my head for days, and by the time we got home from deployment, I felt manic. I wasn't sleeping, I wasn't eating, I was pushing more and more into dedicating my time to my work. I eventually started hallucinating, having breakdowns, and eventually tried to kill myself. I got pushed out after several unsuccessful therapy sessions and several more breakdowns. I did eventually go back to school afterwards, did become a little successful, but I have constantly been haunted by insomnia and some immense feeling of guilt, that it keeps jeopardizing my work and relationships. It wasn't until recently, with watching the Gaza genocide by Israel, that I've realized that my entire mental breakdown was associated with that one realization years ago that the success of my work was leading to the death of people, without an understanding of why. I'm at the point in my life, despite having several degrees and expertise, that I have a drastic fear of doing good work, and it's associated with this fear that doing good work will result in more killing. Right now I'm trying to get my PhD through a government grant, and I can't do any of the work associated with it over Gaza, purely because every time I try I have a mental breakdown, begin to cry, and lay in bed all week. At this rate I'll fail my PhD program, lose my financial backing, and probably end up jobless. Idk if I have PTSD, and I always feel ashamed to think about it, knowing that I wasn't a combat veteran and didn't spend time getting shot at. But, something about participating in the military structure, doing good hard work that results in loss of life, it still eats at you. It's not trivial to take someone's life and it shouldn't be, but the efficiency by which a military power can do so makes it incredibly trivial for a government body to execute war easily at the push of a pen, a vote at a hearing, or a simple phone call. War should not be this easy, and we are all feeling this pain because of this. It's hard to come to grips with what I've done, what I've participated in, and how empty it's made me feel. That's why I pay attention now to politics, to the news, and try to be as vocal and anti-war as possible, to prevent this disease from spreading further. I feel sorry for those who call for war, not realizing what war actually is, and wish that more people would listen to veterans when we tell them to stop it.
