Hi Fred, very similar to the Pioneer PL-640. I think I paid $50 for mine. Mine has the original Pioneer cartridge.

I have an Audio Technica 95E cartridge on mine - I purchased mine in 1983 with Graduation from High School money. It plays as good today as ever and I will never get rid of it.

Great sounding player! The Dynamic Resonance Absorber (The silver part on the tonearm) is no gimmick. I recommend the new Audio-Technica VM-95c for this table. A great combination.

Hey Marsipulamis, I bought a VM-95c for my table but struggling to take the wire leads off the old cartridge. I've had this unit since 1984. Any recommendations or tips on removing wires?

Picked one up today at a yard sale .... in the box .... never used for 10 bucks ... a real cheapo unit but fun .

Hi Fred,need some help my father has PL-S40 but it haven't been in use for more than 20-25 years. I'm getting it but according to him it needs a new cartridge. was wondering what sort of a cartridge is suitable for this ? what's the cart you're using? can i replace it with any kind of cartridge?

I paid between $180 to $200 in 1983 (can't remember exact amount.

That had the same buying power as $450 and $500 nowadays.

Ha ha ha! Sorry dude, but your upgrade from a PL-41 was a downgrade! And that Empire cartridge you discarded is a classic, and worth far more than that AT cheapie you put on your tonearm.
