Thank you for taking the time to help us less advanced fiddlers.

Hey man you struggled a bit but eventually arrived at a good lesson. I learned something though it took a while to figure out the A-part. 😆 If you want some actionable feedback running through what you're trying to get out in front of the camera once before pressing record will help you feel more relaxed and get to the point quicker without feeling like you're rushing. It would be cool to see a tutorial of Josie-o. You've got a video of y'all playing by the campfire that sounds great.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m in guitar backing my buddy Thomas on fiddle. I got a version but I don’t think it’s as hot as his. Always open to ideas for lessons if you got one.

Hey, I think you're a good teacher, I reckon, after when you teach a part: it's mechanics, note names (or finger numbers is fine). Perhaps playing the tune looping part A and giving us learning an opportunity to play with you for an extended period of time. And then do the same for the section B. (I think you did this in a previous video) The old time tradition was more akin to learning the pieces this way. The musicians would gather and play the tune 11 times round or more and you'd pick it up eventually.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback next time I upload a lesson I’ll try to put some of that into practice.

How in the world are you holding that bow? That's very interesting, could you explain why/how you hold it that way? I struggle with bow holds, so I'm always interested in new methods. Thank you! :-)

Great question, I’ve never really thought about that much. Most of grip is happening between the thumb and first and second fingers with my ring finger mostly there to to counter the weight from the tip of the bow. The pinky doesn’t really touch the bow at all once I’m bowing a tune. My thumb is between the first and second fingers but back closer to the second than the first. As an Oldtime fiddler I’m trying to use my wrist like whip, the bow stroke starts from the shoulder down through the elbow through the wrist, the bow direction change is where the whip cracks at the wrist. I suspect this grip might help a bit mechanically with that, but it’s not a grip I developed intentionally it just is what’s comfortable for my body. I think I choke up a bit on the bow because I like to be closer to the fulcrum, I’ve tried to fight it and half way through the tune I’m right back to near the fulcrum, so I’ve just stopped resisting.

@@joedoucettemusic have you found that it holds you back from any techniques? People tell me "improper " bow holds (lol) will hold my progress back.... But I can't hold it "right" anyway, and THAT is holding me back. Thank you so much for your great explanation 😊 most help I've gotten before haha

@@joedoucettemusic Seems from the traditional violin perspective there's a, "correct" way to hold the instrument. Old time instruction seems like - practice the gist of something until it sounds good. As I'm becoming more competent I realize most of my favorite songs, like this tune here, are very simple in terms of your left hand but all that nuance and style comes from the bowing, which arguably takes... just... a lot of careful listening and practice.
@davepope35332 жыл бұрын
thankyou. What you are explaining is exactly what Ive been trying find . I think it would be clearer to me if you just kepy doing it slowly, again and again, ad infinitum, but with much less commentry on the ups and downs. Thank you very much

I think learners have to spend time just listening . You need to know the sound/ rhythm youre trying to achieve.
