Cyclists chased by an ostrich. The funniest thing you'll see today

We came down to South Africa for the Cape Argus Tour. It is the biggest cycling event in the world, probably.
On Friday, to stretch out the legs we went on pre-race ride [~130km why not?] to the Cape of Good Hope [I love this name!]. The road by the ocean side was quiet and a lille deserted.
Suddenly, I spotted a white ostrich on my left, then this beast jumped on the road from the right and started chasing my friends! It was a little scary at first, but then I thought I gonna fell of my bike from laughter. The ostrich didn't have any problem to keep up at 50km/h and apparently they do 70km/h with no sweat.
Luckily the creature decided to leave us alone, as we were running out of road. The Cape of Good hope is a dead end way.
My guess he wanted to show off in front of his girlfriend, i bet she was very impressed!

Giant ostriches are extremely fast. They can run continuously at speeds greater than 30-35 mph. Top speed exceeds 40 mph. He wasn't chasing, he was joining in. If he wanted to catch those cyclists, he easily could have.

Actually you may be right. It seems like it might be domesticated to an extent. The ostrich does not exhibit any signs of discomfort, nor does it seem threatened. It’s probably just having fun. And has probably been fed by human hands a few times, lol.

My family was raising a baby emu when I was little. That thing grew up ridiculously fast. Went from sitting in your hand to like 3 feet tall in a matter of a couple months it seems. Anyway, at around that age (3 feet tall) my Mom took me and my brother to an empty state park with the Emu. We went to the empty trailor lots grid, and rode bikes around weaving around wherever we wanted, and the emu was chasing us all around. It was so much fun. Then, when the emu was big enough to stay confined to the emu enclosure, we gave the emu back to grandma and didn't see them for a year or so. By that point, it was full grown and hated everybody. LOL! BTW, pro-tip. Never look into an emu's big ol' billiard-ball eyes. Or do... but realize that if you do, the emu WILL try to peck your eyes out. You think you're having a nice friendly moment looking into their big glossy eyes, and they lunge at you.

What is it with certain birds? I don’t have that cool of a story, but my aunt had chickens once, including a rooster named Robin Hood. He was the meanest animal I’ve met. I and my cousins used to literally play “chicken” with him: rush into his yard and run away screaming at the top of our lungs. Once he cornered and almost attacked my 4 year old sister. I grabbed her and RAN for our lives. I used to ask my aunt to have us for dinner whenever Robin Hood would be the main course. Unfortunately, a coyote ravaged the coop and ol’ Robin died a glorious warrior’s death, defending his hens. Still mad to this day that I didn’t get a bite.

@@TasteOfButterflies Yeah, we really are detached My grandparents have a farm, and all of their children know better than to get too comfortable around animals... but one day, my aunt's then-boyfriend went to my grandparents farm with my aunt and her 3-ish year old girl (my cousin). He knew that my grandparents' animals were "friendly" insofar as my grandparents wouldn't put a 3-year-old in danger, so I guess the boyfriend (forgot his name... I'll call him Chuck) got a false sense of security? Well anyway, we were in the enclosure with some pigs, an emu, some peacocks and peahens, and a very young calf. My little cousin was there because she wanted to see the "baby cow" and she was very excited to see him and even fed the calf (obviously with adult supervision). Fast forward a few minutes and my grandma is calling my cousin and chuck in to take a look at the peahen nests, but my cousin is still more interested in the "baby cow" She starts walking towards the calf, and the calf suddenly had a change of attitude and he lowered his head and huffed. My cousin immediately froze and said, "I think he's mad" and Chuck, feeling entirely too comfortable said, "No, it's okay. He's a NICE baby cow" completely ignoring the message the calf was sending. The calf started to charge my cousin, and my Grandma intervened... nobody was hurt. But that moment always stuck with me. The 3-year-old with zero experience with farm animals got the message loud and clear, she froze, called for help, started backing away. The 30 something guy was the one that didn't have the common sense God gave a goat. We humans are domesticated over the course of our lives and often trade in our serviceable instincts for a false sense of security. I have thought about that moment a lot over the years. I was a teenager at the time, and I remember thinking, "THAT... That right there is exactly what I don't want to happen to my common sense."
