Father Josiah Trenham
Our Newest Lecture Series:
Demonology: Understanding & Winning the Spiritual Battle
The study of the Church’s demonology is a part of basic catechism and Christian instruction. The Scriptures are replete with teaching on the dark powers. Additionally, it is impossible to appreciate the magnitude of the saving deeds of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, without understanding how He, and He alone, has conquered Satan and destroyed his works. Lastly, Christians are called to fight and win in the spiritual war, and for this reason, it is essential that believers understand their enemies and their tactics. Toward this end, Father Josiah presents in these lectures in-depth studies of the Scriptures, Divine Services, and pedagogy of great saints and teachers on the subject of Satan and spiritual battle.
Lecture titles include:
Lecture #1 Jesus and Satan
Lecture #2 Demonology in the Baptismal Rite and the Divine Liturgy
Lecture #3 Gaining Mastery of Satan: The Life of St. Anthony the Great
Lecture #4 How to Win the Spiritual Battle according to St. John of the Ladder
Lecture #5 Engaging the Unseen Warfare: Fr. Lorenzo Scupoli and St. Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain
Lecture #6 C. S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters and Demonic Warfare in the 21st Century Falling West

I am truly grateful for the messages from Fr. Josiah Trenham! And, I am awed by your response here, written so eloquently, in the music of the words God also gives us to express a thought train in the natural flow of the symbolic sounds that convey the communication from the originating mind to those who hunger for the knowledge being "spoken," without breaking it up into discrete sound bites by interrupting-punctuation that dilutes the message; handicapping understanding by the perceiver. This handicapping has been deliberate; "dumbing-down" pupils in the early grades to sabotage reading comprehension, thereby, ensuring they will never reach their full potential. Thank you for your excellent illustration of the lessons in this Reflection! Your well-crafted response employing a classic complex sentence, is an exercise in using flowing words that are heard in the mind, evoking the sound of frequencies and vibrations that are integral to discernment, understanding and True knowledge. This concept can be studied by reading Scriptures, the writings of America's Founding Fathers, and, I presume, probably, of the Church Fathers. Interrupting the flow of words by creating short sentences stops the flow of comprehension, causing the reader to be unable to fully understand the overall concept. Thank you both, for an invaluable lesson!

@@lukeplaysdrums7007 It was the way your words flowed, conveying your thoughts from beginning to end in perfect use of the tools of English grammar; like Goldilocks found perfection in Baby Bear's "tools," while finding only discomfort and disappointment in Papa & Mama Bear's. It was the complex sentence that gave me pause; a rare tool to see in Modern Times; especially done correctly, it opened my mind to stop, and reread from the beginning, with deeper appreciation of the messenger, not just the message! I think what I discerned was your nous, if I understand the concept accurately! Imagine my surprise when I later noted your "handle;" I, too, am a drummer . . . so, I realized there was a connection in your disciplined flow of the multiple languages of communication: word-based, sound frequencies & vibrations, with the rhythm of numbers-in-action; All acting within Time's shepherding embrace to the end. The result here is a disciplined mind making communication look effortless, like when the ignorant observes a masterful drummer and says, "That doesn't look so hard; I could do that!" Thank you for the enlightening interlude.. God bless my friend ☦️

Totally true what you said about music affecting those who visit Orthodox Liturgy. I went to my first liturgy this past sunday, and I had no idea such a small parish could make such beautiful music with only the voice. It was amazing to see how vibrantly everyone worshiped, and I certainly have a new perspective of Orthodoxy. I am going to visit that church more and learn more about Orthodoxy. There is definitely something Divine about the Orthodox Church.

When i was able to go to church and sing in the choir, i would find myself singing either Sunday's Cherubic Hymn or Anaphora, for days.. almost all week . This has a surprisingly similar affect. I never said song could be compared spiritually to the Psalms. Just is similar musically in its crying out to the Lord, it is the same kind of human activity. Why the song and performance resonated with millions and Father Josiah authored a sermon about a pop song. But people also triggered when James Caviezel said Trump like David, anointed by God. Problem is rhetoric no longer required to graduate high school, so many here do not understand use of similes. These same people easily triggered by words they don’t understand and act without critical thinking, quick to anger.

Music is what led me to discover Orthodoxy. Growing up I would listen to sacred music from the medieval and Rennaissance west such as Gregorian chant and Sacred Motets. My favorite was Miserere Mei by Allegri. I wished so much that church music was still like that and being a Protestant there was no hope for me to enjoy this type of music in church especially since I rejected Roman Catholicism. When I discovered Byzantine chant, I knew that I wanted to be apart of the church where that music came from. I love the ancient and unchanging beauty of Orthodoxy. I never felt like I truly worshipped God before I attended my first Divine Litergy. I do not like modern contemporary Christian music. I was always made to feel bad in Protestantism for not liking it because that was the music that would bring more people to church. They wanted to reach the younger generation. Well, I am a part of gen Z so that argument didnt work for me. Even athiests acknowledge the beauty of Byzantine chant while cringing at Christian rock. What a tragedy that so many schools cut music out of their curriculum. Music is always the first to go before sports or anything else. I am a professional musician with a degree in Oboe Performance. I understand very well the power of music. It's not a coincidence that the band nerds happened to be the ones with the best grades in school. I am also in the Army and the 42R bandsmen tend to have the some of the highest ASVAB scores as well.

Has anyone any recommendations (a link) to a good message from Fr Trenham for a worldly hedonist whose mother just died suddenly. This 40 year old has (after meeting his mother the day after she died) has suddenly become “spiritual” and wants to devote his life to helping others. After visiting a number of different denomination churches & Buddhist shrines, thinks all religions are the same and they all have the same God and message. Which is to be kind to one another. Fr Trenham gave a great & relevant talk recently called “The Real God” (on Orthodox Sentinel Radio) which doesn’t seem to be available.

Really dig this brother! As a Protestant, we do have STRONG disagreements upon the sufficiency of the atonement and salvation, but with those EXTREMELY important disagreements, I must say, I was deeply encouraged to hear you speak on this matter. As a follower of The Way who is a singer-songwriter and a musician, I’ve been thirsty to hear more about what God is doing through the work of this man and I appreciate you taking the time to do so. However much I appreciate your argumentation, I don’t think that you have successfully made a case that music-not lyrics only, could be sinful against God or non beneficial to the listener. I would argue, that the CONTENT of one’s music can be sinful if it does not submit to what The Lord has deemed as true, beautiful and good (Phil.4), but nowhere have i found in scripture as my operating standard (which is the only Godly approach to understanding reality; starting from the Christian worldview) that the rhythm, melody or harmony can be intrinsically sinful; for the music is only the medium from which what is uttered is communicated (from within the song format). I do make a more precise argument if you’d like to take a look, but if not that’s cool too! Other than this, God bless you and I pray that you come to believe that we are saved through grace alone, by faith alone in Christ alone and that His work on the cross is a finished sufficient work unto man’s salvation not dependent upon repeating it over and over again. Thanks for posting brother!!! SOLI DEO GLORIA (To The Glory Of God Alone) Father, Son & Holy Spirit -Ronnie

Keep in mind...God's mind is not not ours... Keep in mind this is an Orthodox view! Which is a very old and ancient understanding older than the Reformation itself and its existence. Thank you for watching and opening your heart and mind to Orthodox perspectives. He is first shall be last, and he who is last will be first. Orthodox make no claims or suppositions of our place in God's kingdom. That will be the honor of God to do so. His outpouring of love unto mankind in our creation is evident today. His resurrected son Jesus Christ, his only begotten son, and the Holy Spirit work as one in bringing His power of love into the world. We are all servants, no better, we are all are under his protection and care to do only one thing...and this is the basis of Orthodoxy...to Love one another as He loves us. Thank you for your interesting post, I did reflect on your words deeply, in love go and find peace through the cross.

I pray you find your salvation on the cross, through the love of Christ, and your peace. Now I know you will not understand that prayer I just bid you, but every Orthodox reading this will. The Orthodox Church is love. It saddens us, not weakens us to see this rejection of His love, through feeble attempts. We all view this as extremely sad, and our souls cry in sadness.
