This as been all over Tik Tok and grown on KZfaq. What a powerful and attention grabbing song by Oliver Anthony. Lots to talk about in Rich Men North of Richmond, both lyrically and vocally. I do focus more on the vocals and how they compliment the song and message.

Watching your face, You went in to analyze the vocals but still felt the message. He has a great ability to inject the feelings of anger, sadness and frustration into his words and make you feel what he feels. I'd call that a mix of folk and hillbilly blues delivered with perfection.

You put it so well. Seeing what he caused her to feel just washes over her face. She couldn't hide her emotional response. Obviously this is the draw of the song. You can't help but feel the same frustration he does at the lack of care from his government.

He has referenced Hank Williams Jr. as one of his influences, who i might note also has a conversational approach in his delivery. Oliver (Chris) also responded to many who had called his music "Appalachian" by saying he was raised in the Piedmont, not in Appalachia; but where his geographical location and life experience does differ, there are undeniable echoes of mountain folk music in his style. His guitar is a Gretzch resonator, the metal plate was designed to amplify the sound in the days before electronic amplification. The major brand selling these resonators is Dobro, so many folks refer to them by that name. The sound is very reminiscent of pedal steel guitars.

The last time I saw a story teller just stand play their guitar and sing from their soul with no gimmicks or fancy backing about the desperation of living in abject poverty and trying to escape it was Tracy Chapman in her song Fast Car. She became a super star because it resonated with so many people and she was the real deal. Oliver / Christopher has taken it even further, exposing the dark side of our men and women in suits rulers who have sold their souls and wish to crush our spirits. That is why this is an across the board smash hit, he sings the truth from the soul and has brought the evil ones into the spotlight of the masses. God is speaking through this man with the Holy Spirit and everyone can feel it, that's why we cry when we hear this song and we have to hear it over and over and over........

To Oliver: Thanks for the message, we hear you, and many out here agree with you. Chin up and keep goin'. @@312af I wasn't trying to imply anything, just pointing out the music styling vs conversational styling of his voice... The song NEEDED to be styled this way... It wouldn't have hit the same in a British or Australian accent. In his Rebuttal video, he even begins in the heavier twang and smiles as he loses it when he makes his point of "they THINK they know me... They don't." BTW: I also am southern borne and culturally similar to him, enough to KNOW that sometimes our twang is leaned into when making a point.

His singing is in the Scots-Irish folk tradition. They settled in Appalachia and other rural areas, far from centers of power. Their music reflects self-reliance, sorrow, and quite a bit of resentment. Think of this song as the discontent in the background. Or perhaps annoyance at the things that folks with no values apparently value.

The message bears more than the style. You are the first reactor that I have seen critiquing the musical aspect, most are overwhelmed by the message. By the way, he does not claim to play or sing well, no training.

This young man is speaking from his life and he is speaking for so many Americans. Politicians need to listen up bc this is how the Country feels.💗💗

I’m no vocal expert at all, so I’m glad to hear you explain it. While trying to emulate his voice singing this song it seems like I’m trying to straddle 2 octaves at the same time. I realize I’m switching between vocal folds as required, but for me I’ll just chalk it up as a new skill I learned while not fully understanding why or how it works. :)

I truly appreciate your reactions....on all genres. As well as your own material. If you happen to listen to more of Oliver's songs, I would highly recommend ayla schofields remix of his "I want to go home fiddle player reacts." she gives his emotions such depth. As of me writing this comment. It has gotten over 900 k views. 🎉❤ 🎉 peace!

I was scrolling through KZfaq, on my iPhone 8+ and I saw this video. It instantly grabbed my attention because of the title, “OLIVER ANTHONY Rich Men North of Richmond | Vocal Coach Reaction & Anal…” Now, I knew there weren’t no way that it was what the title said. I know how KZfaq cuts off the title if it’s too long and I figured that was the case. I was looking to see how people around the world were reacting to the song anyway. Besides, I thought that someone should mention to you how the title could get cut off and the unfortunate results. That way you could be careful not to put words in that cut off spot that don’t represent reality, when they get cut in half. 😅 Great video 👍

Why, thank you for analyzing it for us, Darlin. That was one strong Appalachian song. When do we get to purchase this whole album that you put together, Jenn?

I often wonder if folks from other countries like brits, can hear the subtle accent he has. Very southeastern usa. Virginia, kentucky, etc. which is why he opens up on some of his vowels, as you noted
