Eddie Vedder got laryngitis before the day of this performance, and almost cancelled but decided to perform anyway. That’s why he sounds more raspy than usual, and shy’s away from the bigger notes. Also the head shake thing on the second verse, was because he sang the wrong line. He was signaling to the band that he realized he messed up, and that he would find his way back. He jumps back to the correct line without missing a beat. All that goes on and he still delivers an impressive performance. He’s a true professional.

I agree. Some music just hits you in the guts or makes you think about things, good or bad, and sometimes make you cry. Sadly it's becoming harder and harder to find new music you WANT to be in your head for the rest of your life... It's out there but it's not easy to find it.

This coming from someone who was never much of a Pearl Jam fan, but this performance completely changed my view of Eddie’s vocals and the band in general. I don’t think I’ve seen many performers so invested in the lyrics and actually reliving the emotions that drove them to write the song in the first place. And we can all relate to these feelings and the hopelessness and frustration that Eddie showed in this performance. I really do believe that this is one of the best live vocal performances ever. It definitely got to me!

On a side note, you bring up a very prescient point, that you can feel the truth and realness in the song and in his singing. It was that very thing that helped move rock music from the unreal glam metal days of the late 80’s/early 90’s, to this type of music, or grunge to some. We had had our fill of the partying music and was craving the realness, truthfulness and heartbreak of what was to come in the 90’s. Thanks for your reaction.

Here is Eddie's take on the songs meaning: "The song is about letting go." "It's very rare for a relationship to withstand the Earth's gravitational pull and where it's going to take people and how they're going to grow. I've heard it said that you can't really have a true love unless it was a love unrequited. It's a harsh one, because then your truest one is the one you can't have forever." Amazing reaction as always Anna! ❤

No one has come close to the level of what you have presented in your video. You gave so much technical information with a perfect balance of human emotion and understanding of Eddie and Pearl Jam's music. I was truly astounded at how much you gave us with your analysis. One of the greatest live performances ever recorded! Love it!... Anna, your analysis was wonderful as usual as you are clearly moved by the song on an emotional level, yet you're still able to break down what's going on with the vocals with your keen observations! For further Pearl Jam possibilities, I would highly recommend "Jeremy" either from this same unplugged session or the original (and quite controversial) music video.... Even Flow is another great one with the original music video really showcasing Eddie's acrobatics on stage in concert....

Watching someone listen to this song for the first time is something I’ve never experienced before, and my own initial experience happened over 30 years ago, but seeing the unbridled emotion that was brought out of you made me feel that very emotion that Black brought out of me all those years ago. That’s pretty amazing- for music and voice and lyrics to have that power. I’ve never seen your content before watching this video tonight- just happened to show up as a recommendation in my google feed. So, I don’t know how your videos typically play out but it was moving to see the emotion that this version in particular is able to invoke.

From his Soundgarden days "Black Hole Sun" From his Temple of the Dog collab with Eddie Vetter: "Hunger Strike" With his most recent band Audioslave: "Like a Stone". Audioslave has members of the band Rage Against the Machine in it as well. Tim Morello's guitar solos are crazy. I think as a vocal coach you'll love "Hunger Strike" Some of the vocals he does there are amazing. "Like a stone" is probably my favorite, it shows the growth of his singing.

You are *so* right in saying a technically perfect delivery will overshadow emotion. And Vedder has always been about delivering maximum emotion with what he does. I'm so glad that they didn't cancel / postpone this - the fact that Vedder struggled thru this with a cold made it more special imho!... you can tell there's some inflammation & mucus which is not normally there, & it makes his cries, fry, & parts where he's really leaning into it, all the more dramatic. Don't get me wrong, he probably needed 3 or 4 days vocal rest after this, but it gave the live capture something #Special. For me, it's the best MTV Unplugged, & I still watch the whole thing thru sometimes, 30+ years after the fact. I'd love to see your thoughts on him singing with the mighty Chris Cornell in the Temple of a Dog single "Hunger Strike" sometime. That's a truly special song with 2 great, & very different, singers. ;)

I liked that " Damn " ( possible translation : I've got trapped... ) and since that moment until the end ( that I've seen 5 times and not done yet ) WOW, it was like a movie that won an Oscar for best female performance, in this case emotional reaction 2024... You make me fly 🎈🎈🎈♥♥♥Thank you very much Anna !
