Remember the episode when Elizabeth was trying to learn all of the recipes of grandma ‘s. There was one particular cake she just couldn’t get right. I think she had tried at least three times. Grandma finally revealed the one ingredient she left out. It was the recipe as was referred from the steel of the Baldwin ladies. That was a good one!

I've recently been watching The Waltons on Utube and I love it more now that I'm older than when I did as a teen.... I just watched the episode where Grandma was teaching Elizabeth to cook the cake and finally telling her the secret ingredient was a little of THE RECIPE from the Baldwin sisters! Shocked me and gave me a belly laugh coming from Grandma!

Howdy folks, I'm your neighbor over here in Oklahoma. When I was in high school, I started to make an applesauce cake from a recipe from the side of our bag of Shawnee Flour. My daddy loved it so much! He used to say, "Sis, will you make me one of your apple sauce cakes today?" That was in the mid-seventies. Daddy died my sophomore year. I'd give anything to hear him ask me to make it for him again. I can't remember the recipe, and I can't find it. I do think it was quite a bit like this one. I made it in a bundt pan. It had a glaze rather than frosting. Thanks for posting this. I am going to give it a try!

This is awesome!!! This is the cake Olivia made for Christmas on the very first Walton movie before the Series began!!! Patricia Neal played Olivia in this movie!!! I think she had to walk to Ikes store to get some sugar to make the cake and the kids were cracking nuts out in the barn for the cake!!! Good memories for sure!!! I just love your vintage kitchen!!! Reminds me of my Grandparents cozy kitchen where Grandma spent hours cooking on an old wood stove!!! I made a banana cake with cinnamon this am and decided to make a brown sugar icing...It was like fudge by the time I was done with it!!! Tasted great!!! Thanks for sharing this recipe!!! God Bless🙏

janice NICHOLS- Yes, THE HOMECOMING, set in 1933. I have that movie on VHS and DVD. I love that movie and could sit down with the Waltons and fit right in. Our NH working farm is a testament to 1940. We are pretty much frozen in time. My father-in- law's 1940 panel farm truck is still in the hay barn. We have to roll it out to get it started! When we built our farm cottage in 2016, the kitchen is a combination of 1930 and 2016. The back wall has a 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove and a 1924 Hoosier baking cabiet. Also a 1900s Faultless treadle. Only thing I'm missing is an oak ice box. Still looking for a small one. New Hampshire winters often have power outages, so we use the wood stove often. That was an awesome era!

You are so good at taking me back to my childhood! Being originally from Virginia it really takes me home! My mom always made an applesauce cake and a hermit cake at Thanksgiving and Christmas! The house always had the most incredible fragrances of the various spices. Mom actually put just a tidge of bourbon in her applesauce cake. The alcohol would cook off but the flavor was delicious! The Walton's was a favorite of my mother and we had everything finished on Thursday night so we could watch the show. My husband and I lived south of Schuyler, Virginia when he preached in Chatham, VA. The Hamner house is located between Altavista and Charlottesville, VA. A little girl with red, who is grown now, went to church camp when we worked there. Her name was Skyler Hamner and I wondered if she was a part of the Earl Hamner family. This cooking episode brings back good memories of my momma and serving the Lord in Southside, VA.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣...I fell off the couch laughing. Mr.Brown hanging out in the kitchen was just just like my Grandpa back in the 70's. He drove my Grandma crazy until she got smart and put him to work in the kitchen. My Grandma was making this cake long before the Waltons were ever on T.V. When I was as a kid we only got one T.V. channel and we had many of the programs you mentioned. The station sgined off at midnight and didn't come back on until 6 am. Oh what great memories you've brought back to me. Thank you, bless you both.

I was excited for this video! The Waltons is my all time favorite show. My favorite episode is when Ester comes home after having her stroke. I cry every time I watch that episode. My second favorite is where Zeb and Ester are at odds about tearing down the old Whitley house in town. That house is where they first courted and in the end grandpa rescued the stain glass window and installed it in their bedroom. Although it is a sad episode, my third favorite is when John-boy wins a journalist contest and gets to go to New Jersey to report about the Hindenburg and it crashes. I love history so appreciated the real footage from the crash that they used in the episode.

I'm 47, didn't grow up watching the Waltons at all but in my adult life I have absolutely loved it. I just saw the episode a few weeks ago. They were going to enter the cake into a contest. Grandma knew that another woman who often won used the bourbon in her icing. She told Livy she could sneak a capful or two from Grandpa stash that he didn't think she knew about. They sneaked it and Grandpa knew. She was sniffing her breath for a sign. Lol

My daughter and I have watched every one of the Walton shows. She started watching with me when she was three years old and she just loved it (along with Little House on the Prairie)..one show was on Tuesday and the other was on Thursday. I always thought to live like the Waltons would be so much fun and Grandpa was my favorite character..I liked when he would get Grandma riled up...The applesauce cake would be a great addition to a holiday brunch or at a ladies church function. I think one of the tv channels has The Waltons on around noon time, but I don't watch much television anymore..life has me too busy these days. Good to see the "taste tester" back in the kitchen! Mr. Brown is a keeper, for sure. Thanks again, Ms. Lori, for another historical recipe...have a great week❣️

My favorite Waltons memory is watching the movie "The Homecoming". They were waiting for dad to make it home for Christmas through a terrible snow storm the days before Christmas. Patricia Neal played Olivia. I thought she was AWESOME, I really liked her as the mother. Throughout the movie, she was always taking about making her famous Applesauce Cake. I'd love to have a piece of your cake, Ms. Lori...

I loved all those shows. I was born in 1963. I loved the house. For awhile we had rotary phone and 3 tv channels and the tv antenna and a record player. My grandma Dad’s mom had a tv with radio and record player and I sure thought we needed that tv. Cake looks delicious, Ps Dragnet was my all time favorite tv show and still us. Seen heehaw and Lawrence welk because my parents watched it.

I loved the Walton's when I was growing up, too. I wanted to be a writer like John Boy. So much to love about that old show. Thank God those old shows are still available cause the shows they have nowadays don't have a moral to the stories. Hard to find morals anywhere on this earth, I'm afraid. Like you said, "take care of yourself, take care of your own, it'll be alright."

I loved the Walton’s too. I had a little 10-12 black and white TV in my bedroom and would watch on it mostly. I had the biggest crush on Jon Boy. 😊. I used to be so invested in the series and when the Characters started to die it was heartbreaking.

My Grandma passed away watching the Waltons. She was only 72, sitting in Her recliner. My Grandpa was reading the paper. He looked over and she was gone. While it was sad, what a calm way to meet the Lord. The cake looks good, can almost smell it from here.

My husband & I watch the Walton's every weekday on the INSP channel. Husband had never seen the show, as he was raised in a house without TV here in Arkansas. Now he is addicted to the program.. lol I think it is because he was the baby of 9... and can relate to much of the shinandigans that happen... haha. Love your home-cooking & you remind me of food that I used to make years ago.

One of my favorite episodes is when Grandma's friend bequeathed her $250 and promised $50 to be used for a new church roof. I remember that episode of the Walton's where Olivia and Grandma was in the kitchen cooking and it was grandma's idea for Olivia to use just a little bit of grandpa's whiskey for the icing . So it would give her cake that special touch.
