Olivier Giroud has been overlooked for much of his career. Or at the very least, has always been seen as a support to “more talented” or noteworthy players around him. And while the support aspect is true, it is used against him while it should be celebrated. Giroud makes his teammates better, and he has finally started to get the appreciation he deserves.

A true professional and an unselfish player. The way he handled the hate he got from fans, the not so subtle disses from Benzema and the arrival of Zlatan so well. My respect has grown for him over the years, I'm glad he won a title with Milan.

One of the 4 last milan games where leao did 2 assists and tonali 2 goals, i realized in replay that both goals giroud was a clear scoring option who dragged 3 defenders with him leaving Tonali free on both occasions. He is one of the best players without ball.

Most Chelsea fans and the coach would never notice this stuff. That’s why Tammy Giroud and lukaku are all so much better when they are not at Chelsea! Wonder how good Werner, Pulisic, Ziyech and havertz actually are when they don’t have a system and manager curb stomping their skill sets! Not sure if you’re Italian or American or what but few people notice these types of vital contributions.

@@pabis6817 the more money involved in a club, the more the players have to deal with other aspects aside from the football. The statistics, the marketing side, the media aspect etc.. while when you go to a team that is currently in Milan’s status : working hard to become competitive again, football players are more focused on the football side of things and focus on playing their game at its best. PSG is the extreme opposite example.

The quote about doing the shit people don’t see is massively important and as a Leeds fan I had the same change of thought when it comes to Patrick Bamford, him being injured this year has really shown how much we miss the work he does when he’s in the team even if it’s not directly leading to goals

I'm just wrapping up a video about Milan's season, and Giroud truly added up to the season, taking the mantle of number 9 for many more games than a 35 year old should. While he went missing in many "smaller" games, he really showed up in the big games (Milan derby, Napoli, and the last title winning game against Sassuolo). Brilliant video, as always, Adrian ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽

I always kinda liked Giroud (after I heard of him during his title winning season with Montpellier) but never thouht he was a top class striker. Like you said in the beginning, a decent striker with moments of magic. That changed with the world cup (even though he didn't score), because of the way he works for the team. He was always securing balls in the last third and creating room for Mbappe and Griezmann to thrive in.

As a Chelsea fan I always remember hearing people bash Giroud. But I never understood why because whenever Chelsea played Arsenal it was noticeable to me how much he would grind down our defenders. His off ball actions especially. A feint here, a deep run there, closing off an opposing team player somewhere in between etc. Even early on in his career he was a specialist in destroying defensive options for opposing teams while sacrificing heavily for other attackers on his squad. Similar to Benzema in that way, but Benz got all the praise because he was sacrificing for CR7 while Giroud was doing so for the regular guys. It drew criticism, but that's exactly the attitude you want players to have for your team. Giroud was fantastic at Chelsea. The other lads would run thru a wall for him and he acted as a secondary coach in the locker room. He noticeably improved his physique with us so I'm not surprised at his increased output. Nor that he has found more silverware with Milan. Giroud, simply a class act.

I felt exactly like you did, why is Giroud starting for France etc. As a Milan fan I didn’t think he was gonna help us in any way, but damn was I wrong! He came up in the biggest games/moments and is a great locker room guy that helped the young players with mentality & professionalism. I severely underrated him, glad I was wrong and glad he helped Milan get back to the top! ❤️🖤❤️🖤

The change for my view of Giroud came after that Australia match in the 2018 World Cup. Gavin Hunt analysed his game in such a way that he made you see what he was doing so that the team played better. I mean Hunt is a Premiership coach but it was really helpful. This comes to show that fanboys of a player can really damage another's reputation. Özil fanboys hated Giroud for wasting some great passes, which he did, but to be honest most of the reputation that Giroud had was shaped by them.

You do have to respect Giroud. at Arsenal: truth is they were very creative but the issue with challenging for the title was the defense and the defense midfielder. the three FA Cups in four years (less than 4 teams have done that in history if I am not mistaken) shows that that squad was really good. That was their first silverware in 9 years in 2014 I think he got a bad rep because of the Arsenal banter era and toxic fans. at Chelsea: won the UCL and a few cups. at France: won the world Cup in league 1: winner at AC Milan: first title in 10 years I'm an Arsenal fan so I can comment most on his time there. see Wenger ball, Emery, etc I can appreciate his touch and finesse he plays the game beautifully. he isn't a "main man" that will push a team over the edge but he is a player that can play off the best players better than majority of the players I have watched. that's why I think he is so successful. he suffers from the time at Arsenal. he wasn't Van Persie do he go hate from the fans and he played for Arsenal so it's easy to laugh at and citisise him. also when he does make an error it is epic which doesn't help. kinda like Morata. his career achievements are up there with some of the best so hey. respect.

I've always loved Giroud. I always felt he was kind of a scapegoat at Arsenal. I was devastated when Lacazette came in and basically pushed Giroud out to Chelsea. I followed both of their stats for a couple of seasons and Lacazette never really distinguished himself in the numbers vs Giroud. On top of that, he didn't have the same level of set up passes (think the Wilshere goal) nor a "Meaty French Forehead." I feel like Arsenal lost his leadership too, which we've needed ever since. I'm glad that he's had such a successful career post-Arsenal though. I've been keeping tabs on him since his departure and it always brings me a smile when he wins something. That 2018 World Cup run was amazing. Such a great way to confound critics. His game was all about the set up for Grizmann and Mbappe. It just made the whole team click. Thanks for the video!

he clearly needed help and competition from another striker during his spell in arsenal. fgs, he was a 12M striker but people expect him to be a 50M striker and act like he's the worst ever striker when he couldn't fulfil that expectation. i don't think he's underrated anymore but i always see people (or should i say haters) watered down his contribution everytime he won a trophy. he deserves all the trophies he won tbh. that guy got good G/A in cup finals/final league winning game. he scored many clutch goals in the club he played/plays for. Conte, Maldini and (?)Mourinho rate him. that really tells you something.

Quite the enigmatic striker when you come to look of it. He was frustrating for many a fan who started watching him however he is quite a crafty player and very useful. In our title winning season with Milan, he sniffed out chances that many a striker wouldn't be able to recognize and that's commendable. I remember praising him in France's run to the WC title and bantering him about how he couldn't hit a barn door but his link up play and clever movement off the ball was pivotal in freeing up players like Pogba, Griezmann and Mbappe to deliver the goods.

I think I must have been one of the few Arsenal fans that kept defending him when he played for us & wasn't happy at sold him to Chelsea. People kept saying he should be dropped so that Walcot could play in the middle, because Walcott seemingly was scoring more, but my retort was 'it doesn't matter how many an individual player scored, what mattered is how many the team scores with that player in that position' and Giroud's link up play appeals for itself. He also scores important goals; in pretty sure in two separate games against Everton it was his goals that brought us level from losing positions. He was influential in that classic league Cup game comeback against Reading after being brought on at half time & being 4 goals down. Also while not always being 1st choice I believe he always was 1st or 2nd in the goals per min table in the Premier league while playing for us

I might be bias, but i loved him in Arsenal. Did he score 30 goals a season? no. But he was so much more than just goals. Even tho hes a big (physical striker) he was so much more than just headers and tap ins. Girouds force ,imo, is hes abillity do drop down and anticipate in the build up, and do it good. He understand the game, understand how to set up teammates etc etc. Wich imo is a rare trade for a striker with he's physical build. Now did he have Oscar Cardozo's finishing or Berbatov's? no.. but he certainly works hes *ss of and helps the team. (and im sorry he did that from the wenger days, if you cant see that, you didnt watch arsenal back then). Being a good striker can be so much more than just an insane goals pr game ratio, depending on the team you play on, firmirno, bergkamp and drogba are great examples of that. Now do i say he's the greatest of all time? not a f*cking change mate. But he deserves the credit, and people who can't see that, are type of people that looks to much at stats, and watch to little football.

The best thing about Giroud is not being an arrogant SOB like Henry

This man has got to be the most disrespected, unappreciated footballer i've ever seen. Arsenal absolutely disgraced themselves with the way they treated him, and then so did Chelsea. Let me just remind everyone that Chelsea got rid of Giroud and Abraham so they could have Lukaku instead. I feel like he's similar to our Firmino in the sense that he's probably not going to score you 30 goals a season, but he'll definitely enable the rest of your team to score more, and he'll finish the important chances when they come.

I always liked giroud......but i watch football differently....oli drags 3 players after him at arsenal and chelsea.....people who knew this always appreciated him

Or he goes to a less defense league!! It seems to happen to a lot of strikers who leave the Premier League, ie Lukaku.

He’s always been a serviceable striker, but he’s also almost always been the least talented player in a forward line. Much like Laca, which is interesting that you made a difference between them (bc they more or less had a similar output for arsenal). He’s just been a good, but not great striker on some great teams

Can any Arsenal fan in the comments confirm how good Giroud was for them and if he’s improved with age?

The definition of a scrappy player. Maybe only Firmino comes to mind in terms of selflessness.

Please, no tedious revisionism about his time at Arsenal. He was awful and cost us the league. And no blaming of Arsenal fans for being "ungrateful" either.

Arsenal needed a Defensive midfielder from 2012 to 2016. when that squad had a chance the attack wasn't the issue it was the defense. look at the stars and the games, the attack wasn't the issue it was the defense.
