He wasn't that great in the 2014 World Cup though. Of course him being on the pitch would mean more problems for the opponents (more great players to focus on), but he was actually horrible that World Cup (was abysymal in the group stages, had one of the worst games in World Cup history vs Switzerland (scored the winner though) and left the pitch against Belgium after 15 minutes (he did play good that day though)). His season with Real Madrid in 13/14 was incredible however.

Di María in the 2014 season for Real Madrid was the MVP while alongside Prime CR7, Benzema, Bale and many others, because he gladly accepted his role as a CM, and he was essential in winning La Décima. As a Madridista, it's a real shame that he left, but there were problems with his contract renewal (similarly to Ramos, CR7, and many others), and nobody is above the club, unfortunately. Real Madrid kept on doing great without him, and he never quite reached his full potential again, but I will always remember and love him for his passion while playing for us. ¡Te amamos Fideo!

That would apply to P$G, Bayern, or Juve (who count for 2 UCL in the past 10 years, while being "The only horse in their leagues"), but La Liga is as tough (if not tougher) as the EPL. We already saw how many Spanish teams (Sevilla, Atleti, Villarreal, Betis...) besides "The two horses" manage to win national and international tournaments, and give amazing performances most of the time they don't. Saying La Liga is a "Two horse race" is about as stupid as saying the same thing about the EPL with Liverpool and City, who are the only two serious contenders these past few years. And to your other point (that first one was so outlandish I had to write extra for it), Real Madrid has very strict contract renewal practices. (Year on year after ~33, no negotiation until 2/3 yrs left, which is the reason of the Di María sale, etc) Which allow players to flourish, but under Real Madrid's terms, because as I said, no one is above the club. And that last part is the main reason why Real Madrid is still very profitable and very successful decade after decade, and why we'll never see what is happening to Barça around here. (As long as those practices are kept and Florentino is around)

It wasn't a failure. He had two problems that made him want to leave, his fight with Van Gaal and the robbery he suffered at his house. He himself has said it in interviews.

I think the main reason he’s underrated is because at the international level he’s always had to directly compete with Messi whilst at the club level he has a habit of pissing off the fans. He offended the United fans and nearly all of Manchester within a year of being there and then later disrespected Madrid even though the fans liked him and didn’t want him to leave in the first place. He’s been good at PSG but nobody respects PSG at all, so nobody outside of France really cares about him.

Di Maria always has been great to watch. The man behind the comeback against Atletico Madrid to win La Decima to a legit PSG legend. Despite not having a great time at Manchester United(I honestly blame LVG for ruining him and also Di Maria never really wanted to play in England and Manchester United), he was in the top 3 of the most assists in the Premier League, only Fabregas and Baines had more. For most Manchester United fans, he's a snake but the rest of the football world he's one of the greatest inverted wingers of his generation.

We replaced him with Memphis and he was more concerned for his lavish lifestyle than playing for Manchester United while Di Maria broke the most assists record in Ligue 1 history on his debut season with PSG. I will always blame LVG for ruining Di Maria.

I'm in the group of people that didn't give Di Maria enough credit, but looking at his fbref stats, the guy is a monster, never dropped below 1 goal contribution every 2 games in league matches since his last season at Benfica, never below 0.45 G+A/90 in any Champions League since his last season at Benfica as well, and topped the Assists/90 and XA/90 charts of the Big Five leagues multiple seasons. Insanely productive and consistent through every team and manager change

Unfortunately I would class Di Maria as a "victim" of the Messi and Ronaldo dominance on this era and how their incredible performances attracted so much of the public attention. This has lead to some players like Di Maria being talked less about and fewer people being aware of how good they actually are. To further add to Di Maria's case he's been playing since he was 21 years old at top clubs in Europe for at least 3k minutes for 7 seasons and only 3 seasons where he had under 2k minutes, 2nd season at RM 11-12 with 1700 minutes, the season that ended with 1900 and his spell at United with 1995. To put this into perspective 40k minutes over 15 seasons in Europe, Messi's at 57k minutes insane amount, De Bruyne is at almost 40k minutes (only 14 seasons played though) and Muller 44k minutes also at 14 seasons played. This means also that he achieved those insane stats while playing fewer minutes showing he can be more efficient at times. FBRef values here. Will be very interesting to see him at Juventus.

In his prime he was world class without a doubt. He was probably just extremely unlucky that at the two clubs (Real Madrid and PSG) he played for the longest period of his career he has just always had the most elite attackers in his team which made it difficult to stand out next to them. At Real Madrid it were Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Higuain, Özil and Kaka and at PSG he had Mbappé, Neymar, Cavani, Zlatan and of course Messi. If he played for almost any other team like for example Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool he surely would have gotten a lot more credit and spotlight.

I love Di Maria and I think he’s incredibly underrated. But I hate when people tie Assists to being a good Playmaker. The number of Assists has only barely something to do with your playmaking ability. For example Suarez and CR7 have a ton of Assists too but they’re not playmakers. To me playmaking consists of a lot more things than just plain assist numbers, for example how much you’re on the ball and what you do with the ball, how creative you are and how you control the pace of the game and you have to be cleverer than most other players on the pitch. I think the best Playmaker I’ve ever witnessed is Pirlo and I don’t know about his Assist numbers but I’m pretty sure they’re below 200.

I feel that he is underrated compared to the players you mentioned for two reasons: 1. He’s best season weren’t as memorable as the competitions (Bruno arrives to United, Müllers unstoppable duo with Lewa, Messi with the 20+20 in a terrible Barca side and so on). 30+10 is better then 20+20 in the eyes of football fans. 2. I think people do tend to take away some deserved credit from the lesser big name players, he is quite quiet so that also doesn’t help. +1 He’s cv is a bit less then some of the players he should be compared to, for example Müller has won a World Cup and a treble vs a few league titles and a champions league

I tell you why nobody talks about di maria. Because he flopped at United. OK he was partially to blame but that club is a death pit for players. Consequently, you know how these football connoisseurs are. If you flop in the prem. You aren't a good players. Di maria has always been a beast. European fans know it. I love the fact that you looked up whether there was a Di Maria corporation, Adrian. The added value says much about your thoroughness. I think there is this sense that Di Maria isn't consistent. I've seen mazy runs, and incredible finishes (such as that strike against France in the 2018's game of the tournament), but I've also seen him apparently be invisible. I suspect that this perception is not entirely accurate. It may be, as you say, that he just gets overlooked in part because he isn't the headline grabber or the 30 goal scorer. Until a few years ago I saw Benzema this way, very good, but just not as noticeable with Ronaldo around. Of course, the past three seasons of Benzy World have utterly destroyed that perception. Perhaps at Juventus where there is not one single star (unless Vlahovic scores 30+ this season), he will get more notice from fans.

This Man is a legend. Problem is that Messi fans and media cant stand another great Argentina player, cause they need to maintain the narrative of Messi playing alone in his National team. He would not have been underrated if Courtois had not stopped his outside of the foot shot that he took after skipping past 3 Atletico players on the left side and then it fell to Bale who headed the ball into the empty net. That should have been Di Maria's goal. All the hard work was done by him and instead it was Bale who 'got' the goal (UCL Final 2014). Sometimes life is unfair.

Messi made almost made everyone work with him underrated, so it's not a surprise for me.. Most people didn't see how good players off the ball, how good players maintaining their team shape and formation during an attack.. they only want to see how good players when they have the ball.. Also prize ceremony like Balloon D'or didn't help either.. Because in Balloon D'or the only thing matters is Popularity not Quality because they only vote popular player who showed more often in Media.. You'll win Balloon D'or even if you play so badly, and make your team losing 8-2 in UCL, as long as you got more media attention than the winner, people would remember you more and vote you.. And you'll lose Balloon D'or even if you beaten the best team on the world 3-1 in UCL, and help your underdog team reach WC Finals against the best country on the tournament.. Because again, Media would cover the best team's failure more than your underdog story..
