Just FYI, you can easily chop samples into 16 equal parts by recording a bar or 2 into the melodic section then copying it over to the drum section. When you do it this way, it ignores transients and just splits the sample equally!

Hey Josh. Great Comment. Thanks for sharing! What's your favorite thing about the KO?
@sharkfortytwo5 жыл бұрын
Ollie Loops Probably the way it trims the samples... being accustomed to how the mpc chops each slice, where the end of one slice is the beginning of the next one, the way the 33 lets you overlap your chops, more like an ASR. makes playing your samples out more dynamic and interesting in my humble opinion. i might have kept my mpc 500 if it sliced like that. seems more intuitive tbh

Got a KO for xmas and have been having a blast with it. I think you're spot on with the 'to get you addicted to making beats' statement; I'm primarily a rapper and I already spend so much time in a DAW recording and mixing that I've never been especially excited to dive into production in Ableton/FL etc. and wanted a different way to start working on my own instrumentals. The KO has been a really fun and relatively cheap way to dive into production from the hardware side. Dig the video and hit you guys with a sub, look forward to more!

I have always loved lo-fi sounds, so the po-33 was for me. Once you get used to the workflow it's really fun to make music with it and even becomes kind of natural. The only big problem to me is the limited memory...

I agree, I am totally new but I can see a big limitation there... I keep removing samples in order to get some seconds of memory. Well the sound slice is a great feature to obtain some great drums and I converted one drum set to a bunch of useful sounds, mostly sung words or just voices. So that's a very useful function IMHO. I guess that one workaround is to link more than one POs... Don't know yet if you could link two of the same model...

It's the only one in the line I've felt confident in being able to adequately produce complete tracks on just a single PO. I also find that it's an endless supply of inspiration. I'm fortunate. I have a studio with a lot of nice drum machines and synths in it but I can't seem to leave this one alone. I've already produced one album on it and I'm nearing the completion of a second one. i think the ko is a great tool for “professional” and fun music making.its small enough to take field recording, playing on the couch, or sketching ideas which then later can be made on something more capable such as a daw. it has it’s own character and paired with some good sound sources you can probably get a group of friends rocking with a beat u made with a lil machine u had in ur pocket. personally i use it to sketch ideas or sample sound effects i hear from video games or day to day life and have it as a sound bank for later use. i’ve also used it in a band when no drummer was present to keep everyone on time :) the ko is the perfect companion for the op-z since it does not have sampling YET! BTW ollie great content as always! i can see much improvement in the quality of video and dialogue, please make a hidden feature video for ko and tonic! also maybe a video about pocket operator accessories or cases ☃️🌟

i wonder if putting compression on a loop, beat or whatever before sampling it into the PO 33 would clean it up some?
@OllieLoops4 жыл бұрын
yes and no. Using compression and (more so) eq will be able to clean up your source material to a degree, and we recommend this. Check out our video on using the KO with guitar pedals where we show these principles: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frdyZrZ1m7apmqc.html But as soon as you sample to the PO33, it's internally processing will add some noise and compression to your sample. And that's just the nature of the device.
@Polarityshifter4 ай бұрын
I know it’s a beginner device seen as a toy but a toy like this one for the price doesn’t offer the FXs this one comes with, as PO-35 or 32. This is a really good deal, these devices should come with extra functionality for EQing and isolate every sound through frequency spectrum and then it wouldn’t be seen as a toy, even though I think it’s a modern way to play around out of the box or a way to record a jam inside a DAW

@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment and support! The Tonic is quite different from the KO. From what I have gathered, the Tonic has a mic only to received data. The layout and function on the Tonic is different also. Where the Tonic has an Accent button, the KO has a Record button. And the KO uses its mic to sample, not data transfer. Hope that helps!

I haven't seen this in any of the video demos, so wanted to ask: Can you load a different sample onto each key (up to 40 seconds, of course), and just use it to play them back? (I understand it's not an MPC). I've mostly seen people putting in one sample, and playing that one sample in different pitches. Like putting "Woo" on key 1, and "Yeah" on key 2, and Chuck D saying "Bass!" on key 3, etc...
@OllieLoops2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. Here's a few things to know and how to do what you want to do: 1. The Melodic section of the sampler is designed to spread one sample across the steps of the device in a melodic minor scale. I have a video that explains this better. So, you won't use this section to do what you described? 2. The drum sample section is designed to take a series of drum sounds recorded as one recording and spread them across the steps of the device. However, there is a hack to copy and paste samples between the melodic section of the sampler to the drum section so that you can get individual samples as you described. I have a video on that as well. So, there are two ways to do what you want: The copy and paste method, and recording all the samples you want as a single recording which will spread them across the steps of the device. I hope that helps.

I purchased a PO-33 about 7 months ago. But a few days ago, for no apparent reason, it stopped turning on. I found him with a completely dead screen and couldn't resuscitate him. I did everything that is written on the manufacturer's website, but it did not give any results. I began to study this issue and it turned out that this is a common problem faced by po owners, it just stops turning on for no apparent reason. As far as I understand there is some error in the design or program. I wrote to the support service of teenage engineering, to which they replied to me that they could not replace my tool and could not repair it. They sent me a list of components so that I could order them and repair them myself. This is strange. Because absolutely nothing happened to PO, it just lay idle for a few days, and stopped working. If even the specialists of teenage engineering can't fix this flaw (judging by how often PO owners face this problem), why do they offer to fix it for me on their own? Then they stopped replying to my messages. I was very disappointed. I paid $ 90 for a piece that didn't even work for half a year. I was refused replacement, technical support, and no response at all. And the output sound of this thing is really shitty.

Jack Daniel-Keane no worries. The KO, like most or all Teenage Engineering devices save in real-time. It’s super convenient. That said, the KO is limited to 16 patterns and the banks of samples. In my experience, this means making one song at a time. You can data transfer to and from the device to work on another project. So I just data transfer off, delete all patterns and samples to start a new song. I hope that helps.

I was wondering if you can help me... I'd like to record my PO 33 patterns into Logic Pro. I have a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 audio interface. I tried every which way last night and could not get anything to work. It was as if the audio interface did not recognize the PO 33-- no sound, Logic wasn't picking up anything. The audio interface itself is fine, I can easily record my synths to Logic Pro. So, what am I doing wrong? What cables do I need? I was using a single 1/8" from the audio out on the PO33 to 1/4" cable going into the Focusrite.
@OllieLoops4 жыл бұрын
Sonya Ziegler hey Sonya, let’s see if we can help. To confirm, you will need a stereo TRS 1/8” to (2) mono 1/4” cable, since the PO33 is a stereo device. Connect the 1/8” connector to the right side of the KO. Press and hold BPM and select a number between 12-16 to get a decent audio level out of the KO. Assuming the interface and Logic are paired, arm a stereo track. Ensure the interface’s input gain on each input is around 50% or so. Play the KO to test the levels. Adjust input gain on the interface until you have a good signal level in Logic. When ready, record in logic and play the KO. Stop both when finished. Hopefully that works for you. Good luck and comment back if you were successful or not.
@sierragold4 жыл бұрын
@@OllieLoops Thank you so much for replying back, I really appreciate it! It sounds like my problem is in the cable I was using...it must not be TRS stereo. I'll order one today and report back to let you know if get it to work :)
@OllieLoops4 жыл бұрын
@@sierragold No problem. It could be the cable. I would double check the signal levels starting from the KO. And if the KO outputs audio to headphones, then it should be working properly. It's worth noting that the KO resets its output level each time you plug something into the 1/8" connector, so you will need to do this each time you connect to it. If you can record into the interface via the 1/4" inputs, then it and Logic should be working properly. And it could come down to the cable. Let me know how it goes.
@sierragold4 жыл бұрын
@@OllieLoops Thank you so much for responding! Yes, I think it has to be the cable. The output on the PO 33 was definately working, as I plugged it into my studio monitors and could hear it just fine. And the audio interface is working, as it records my other instruments just fine. I'm goint to order a TRS 1/8" to double 1/4" cable and see if that works. I'll keep you posted. Thank you, again!

Hey, thanks for your comment. It is a unique interface and one that takes a bit to get use to. I would recommend practicing with it often and being patience as you are learning something new. Although it’s a seemingly simple device especially the interface, there is still a fair amount of complexity happening. I often get confused by which mode the device is in. But, pay special attention to the lights under each button. That’s the only way to keep track of what’s happening on the device. I hope that helps. Enjoy the KO.

Should I buy this . Context is that I have be making music for a fair while. The reason I want to buy it is because of its portability which makes me think I can make music anywhere, but is the sound quality worth it . Can you make music anywhere . Or should I get a op-z or op-1
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom, Thanks for your comment! It is a bit difficult for me to answer that, because it depends on several variables. But I can try to help you. First, whats your favorite machine that you've used and why? These days the market for portable beat machines has several options. The KO is good for generating quick and simple ideas. And if you want a lofi machine, than this is a good for that. However, if you need more flexibility, synthesis, and a better sequencer, than this is not it. Some advanced users may find it too simple of a device, but it still has it's place. The OPZ would then be a good option, especially once they introduce sampling on it. You could wait and see how that goes. The OP1 is a great little synth, but the sequencer is a bit lacking for some people. And the OP1 is a bit on the expensive side comparatively. Additionally, you may want to consider the Synthstrom Deluge. Its an amazing value and machine, and its portable. Not as portable as an OPZ, but in terms of features, it blows all these machines out of the water! I hope that helps. Keep me posted on what you decide. And thanks for your support!!
@tomwakeling94325 жыл бұрын
I think I have decided to not buy it as I don’t think I will Carrie it around with me as my phone can do the same as it and better . I still feel in my heart I want it but logically speaking I won’t make much on it as I think I do not enjoy finding samples . The biggest driver to get this is so I can flip vinyl and resample it really easily . Would you recommend the op 1 to flip vinyl if so great
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
@@tomwakeling9432 Hey Tom, I don't want to talk you into or out of buying any devices because ultimately its up to you. I know that's not the advice you may want to hear. But the reality is, you can flip samples with the KO, OP1, OPZ, SP404, Digitakt, Deluge, MPC etc. They all do similar things and can get you flipping samples, making beats and having fun. But, where I think they differentiate is in their user interface and workflow. Each has their pros and cons. Some machines are more intuitive than others. My advice would be to research the workflow for the mentioned devices to see what might work well for you. The KO is super intuitive and easy to use, so you spend your time making beats instead of trying to learn the device. But, if you are the type of person who loves limitless possibilities and learning the depths of a device, than I would recommend a device like the Synthstrom Deluge. All of the mentioned machines are also portable, which I think is an added bonus.

@@OllieLoops thank you for the advice! Do you recommend other gear instead of the sp 404?
@OllieLoops4 жыл бұрын
I think the SP series are great devices and they have their place. Many famous producers have used them. But whether its an SP, or an MPC, or anything else, it’s all a matter of personal preference. It’s hard to make recommendations because what works for me may not work for you. If you have no basis of comparison, then you will want to try different devices to see what works for you. If we return back to the SP, it’s similar to the KO in many ways but with more options. If you like the KO, you will likely enjoy the SP. The next step up might be an MPC One. And it gets a huge step up in features, options and it’s sequencer. For a few hundred more than an SP you get way more machine. You can use as much or as little of those features as you want, its nice to know they’re there in case you still want to learn more. With the SP, it may be all that you need and you may be happy. My experience is that I hit a wall with its sequencer. It’s great for certain things, like simple loop based beats. But if you want anything remotely complicated in your arrangement then it’s not your device. And the MPC is the next best thing to a DAW that I’ve seen. I hope that helps! Good luck!
@Lingatsu4 жыл бұрын
@@OllieLoops I heard that the sp 404 was more designed to loop something you've already made on a daw. So it may not be what I'm searching. Thank you for the big description!
@OllieLoops4 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of guys load loops into pads and then create live sets out of them. The SP’s effects really lend themselves to performances. But guys like Dilla and Madlib used them to create individual beats. So it’s versatile like that. Good luck!

i've been on the fence about one for a long time, I don't mind lofi bit rates/sample rate, but i've heard a lot of ground noise in its recordings on some demo's and i'd like to have some control over that. also, i'm not entirely convinced of its lofi character, that's really what holding me back. some old skool samplers like akai's are lofi but they have a bit of soul to them. the ko just sounds a bit like its lofi for the sake of being lofi and they've not really tried to make it a desirable sound? tbh it would be great if someone could make a sampler which has the soul of an akai, emu but with the immediacy and fun of a po or volca. but tbh i'm probably asking for the moon on a stick!
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment! I'll offer my opinion, for what it's worth. Having not used an MPC60 or SP12 or SP1200, I can't speak directly to that comparison. But I can say that the lofi characteristic of the KO does not have much soul. Comparing it to an old MPC isn't exactly fair since they are vastly different. One is not a replacement for the other. But I hear ya, the KO is lofi, probably because its such a simple and cheap device. I don't know if that was entirely intentional, or that they need to keep costs down and the chip inside it is limited. And yes, I too wish there was a device that has Akai type processing (and sequencing) in a portable and fun platform. I don't think that's asking for too much! But you could check out an SP404 or even older SP303 as another option. And as far as ground hum, that is tricky because its not in the KO so much as the source being sampled. Having a clean and isolated power supply on your gear is critical to getting rid of that noise. And battery powered devices solve that nicely. I hope that helps. Thanks for your support!

@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
Yes! I agree 100%. The auto slice feature on the drum sampler can be challenging to work with. One way I found to get around this is to set up a drum kit I want to use in Ableton, then sample it into the KO. I hope that helps! Thanks for your support!
@RepublicAllegiance5 жыл бұрын
Ollie Loops Thats the ONLY solution. I have been doing essentially the same thing on my audio recorder. Step 1: make FULL 16 sample kit. Step 2: sample into KO.
@OllieLoops5 жыл бұрын
@@RepublicAllegiance yeah, that sounds less than ideal. Kudos for making it work though. But youre right, I wish they would allow sampling into each drum slot. Also, theres a couple of things you could check out like the OP1 Drum Utility from Xref Records. That way you could create a kit without a daw. And the OP1 Fun site has a bunch of patches that could speed up the process of finding and creating kits. Since the OP1's and KO's drum sampler have the same slice feature, you could use those tools with the KO as well. But you would still sample to get them onto the KO! Hope that helps!

yo try this: sample whatever one sound you want (kick) into the MELODIC section. then press SOUND+WRITE and choose a DRUM group to place the kick in. Without letting go, press the individual pad WITHIN the now selected drum group and the sound should be copied over into the drum section without being chopped into 16 parts. you can copy any individual slices this way as well

Drum slicing on the PO-33 KO is trash. To get it to work right, apparently you have to record your drum as a melodic sound and then copy into a drum slot because recording directly to the drum slots never works right. That 16 sound slicing thing is trash: it doesn't detect the silences right no matter how much silence you put in.
