She’s a kid of both countries . She doesn’t need to take any kind of political stance . She’s 19 and skiing . She’s intelligent and positive . Staying out of politics and off touchy subjects is wise . Someone will always find a way to twist words against a person .

Eileen Gu embodies the rare combination of talent, character, beauty and brains, but would she have become such a huge star if she hadn't chosen to compete for China? My guess is NO. We treat our Olympic stars like disposable toys in this country. No one cares or knows who they were the day before the Olympics, and no one cares/remembers them the day after. The only sports icons we care about in this country are NFL and NBA stars, no matter how badly they behave. AFAIK, no US Olympic star, no matter how good looking or successful they are, have ever been associated with brands like Estee Lauder, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany's or Victoria's Secret(yikes), not even Lindsay Vonn. These opportunities are only available to Eileen because she is a rare bilingual, bicultural sports star with a large appeal in China. The only time I can recall seeing Olympic stars in commercials is during the Olympics, and only for those who have won across multiple Olympics like Michael Phelps or Shaun White. But even then, athletes are only marketable while they're still competing. How many ads have you seen featuring Michael Jordan lately? Olympic stars have an even shorter shelf life, since they can only compete once every 4 years, and extreme sports like freestyle skiing are sports that eat their young -- by 25 they are too old. So all those who chide her for being "ungrateful" should realize that America didn't make her a huge star, she did, through lots of hard work, and with some help from China. We could've never given her the kind of exposure she gained in China, because we don't care about our Olympic athletes except for 2 wks every 4 years. What about all the training facility and coaching you ask? Her mom paid top $ for them, and they are available to all other US athletes as well, why aren't they as good as her? What about all the competitions she got to participate in to hone her skills like X Games, World Cup, Youth Olympics etc.? Sure, but EPSN, FIS and IOC didn't stage those games out of the goodness of their hearts. They did it to make money, lots of it, off of these kids, at the cost of their broken bones and concussions since a young age. So please, spare me the "America made her into a Star" whining. We didn't. She is successful because she did all the hard work, took all the risks, and deserves every bit of success and accolade that comes her way.

God the amount of BS in this comment is astonishing. I am not going to respond to all of it but saying that "she did all the hard work" when all she had to do was have good genetics and look pretty is crazy. I mean sure, freestyle skiing is amazing but I am not talking about the sport in itself, I am talking about being a marketing tool and betraying the country you were born into Funny thing is that she is still going back to American universities. So much for cutting ties.

So true. Similar goes for Mondo Duplantis and his decision to compete for Sweden. The US track team and Olympic team in general is so big and vast, that his accomplishments would be celebrate but almost considered a given. In Sweden, he is the biggest sport star imaginable whose face is literally printed on red bull cans in the supermarket. I don't see how that could happen to him in the US, even with his unmatched level of dominance in his sport.

@kai tew "this is funny as many Chinese in china use Instagram and Facebook too" There's a specific sign in Beijing's Olympic town that tells foreigners where they can use 6 international social-media platforms: Facebook, Google, KZfaq, Instagram, Twitter, and Telegram. You know why that sign exists? Because they're all banned inside the communist regime's "great firewall", and regular Chinese people, excluding the communist party officials, will be prosecuted if they get caught using the aforementioned platforms, even under a VPN service. Eileen Gu has gained a lot in this Winter Olympic by competing for China; China has gained a gold medal from Eileen Gu who is half Chinese; Eileen Gu was born and raised in the US as a half American - proven success of US education; Eileen Gu’ success is a win-win for all parties, for now.

For us she represents not only personal success and talents in academic, sports, language… basically everything she does. But also a combination of good values of both sides(including family values). Do some research you will be astonished.

We've done some research, and found out she never publicly denounced her American citizenship, which is already a violation of the Chinese nationality law. But the rich and the powerful (especially if they're affiliated with the CCP) should be free from obeying any law under the communist regime according to you people, right?
