About 10 years ago myself & wife visited Lake Placid,NY. Beautiful town. The skating rink & the ski jump was still there. I watch all the games. 1980 Winter Olympics will never be forgotten. It is great to watch the games again. 44 years later.😎👍🍀

Certainly, the biggest sport's upset off all time, eclipsing the Jets win over the Colts in Superbowl III. I've seen it compared to a medium size college's football team, say Valdosta State, in Valdosta GA, taking on and defeating today's Kansas City Chiefs.

I got to play for Coach Brooks in 1970 at a Minnesoat hockey school. I was 11 years old. I just came off the ice from a shift. He yelled at me "You're in midseason form!" I thought at first he was mad at me!

I watched these games -- was age 17 -- and I remember being perplexed as to why Herb Brooks left to go back to the locker room, not do the same as Craig Patrick and stay to interact with and celebrate with the players. But when I became a coach myself and coached youth athletes, then I understood why. Plus, I am convinced Herb just stayed true and consistent with his approach from the beginning, with his team -- he wasn't their friend; he didn't allow his emotions to show unless he was pissed with them. When they won, those players didn't expect him to be any different and he needed a private celebration

Definitely, a CLASS ACT🎯 RIP: Coach Brooks 🙏❤️ Can't believe that 41 year's have gone by from that GREAT DAY 😢 It's the 1st time that I've rewatched this 🙏My Dad surprised me with tickets about 2 months prior. It was a lottery system and had no idea who we would be watching, that is not until the Friday victory vs. The USSR. I was 22 y.o., one of my fondest memories, especially since it was with my Dad !! Also, was able to attend the Awards Ceremony later on. Will never forget Eruzione calling the entire team up to the Gold Medal Podium. Then, out of nowhere, no PA Announcer or any type of band in charge... The crowd quieted down and a few, sounded like 10 or 20 people began singing "God Bless America", little by slow... before you knew it the entire place was belting it out in perfect unison !! I will Never, EVER forget that precious moment, a moment in which was my MOST grateful feeling of how PROUD I was to be an American... The hair's are standing up on my arms right now, just like that afternoon and tears are also sliding down my cheeks in the same way as they did on that PERFECT DAY 🥲👍🇺🇲🏒🎯❤️ I think that I just might swing by my Dad's tomorrow and watch it again with HIM ‼️ Before it becomes something that "I wished that I had done again", but it was too late 🙏 I wish EVERY AMERICAN could experience that Pride I felt on that Sunday afternoon in Lake Placid in February 1980... What seemed like such a LONG ride up, from the Boston area, the ride back could have been 3 time's the ride and it still wasn't long enough !! It was like floating on the cloud's... I'm still floating.. What happened to OUR GREAT COUNTRY... and I can't see most of the letters on this phone right now with ALL of these tears welled up in my eyes. I'd give anything to FIND that PRIDE again !!! God Bless 🙏 &..... Thanks DAD..... For EVERYTHING !!! 🎯🇺🇲

Commercial greed is one thing, but Olympic coverage has always been the absolute worst, because on top of that they add all the dopey "human interest" crap to keep people who aren't really sports fans interested. There's nothing like watching a nordic ski race or something and having them cut away right in the middle to show you a human interest story about what one of the skiers does in the summertime, or Mary Carillo drinking hot chocolate. I have wanted to murder the producers of Olympics coverage ever since I can remember.

What's funny is we think of sports being more commercialised now than then, and they are, but in old hockey days this was more likely to happen. Before 1992-93, the NHL didn't schedule commercial breaks so I'm pretty sure networks just crammed them in when they could and would occasionally miss snippets of play. And I don't think the Olympics- even now- allow time for tv timeouts. I can't remember since it's been four years since Olympic hockey but I think, at least in Canada, they just don't do ads or just do brief 15 second ones. It's kind of funny that some people do remember that the USA/USSR "semi-final" (not really accurate term) wasn't broadcast live, but the benefit of that was at least you saw all the goals!

For the record, this wasn't the gold medal game. The medal round consisted of the top two teams from both groups. The two teams from group A would play the two teams from group B. Also head to head in the group stage counted. Whoever got the most points (2 for win, 1 for tie) won the gold. So if the USA lost, they would've only had 3 points and likely wouldnt have medaled at all.

Thanks for posting. This is the second time I watched this broadcast. The first was live 40 years ago. I recall the Friday night game against the Russians was not broadcast live. I was able to watch the taped version Friday night. I have a very vague memory of one US goal against Finland being missed because of an ad, but I didn't recall two of them. Bad job on the part of the network. I probably was still so happy about the Friday night result that I didn't mind. My wife and I had gone to the Saturday afternoon game against the Russians at Madison Square Garden a few days before the Olympics. They were so good pounding the American kids that I couldn't help applauding one or two of their late goals set up by great passing and skating. Just stunned that the USA won it all after that. I had watched 18 of the 20 Americans play college hockey at one time or another. And two of them play in high school. Mark Johnson (Madison Memorial and now the Badgers women's hockey coach and Bob Suter Madison East who unfortunately passed a few years ago.)

I grew up in Greater Boston and graduated from UMass in '77, so I had seen the BU 4 play a lot and watched Johnson & Suter in the '77 and '78 NCAA. Didn't get the opportunity to see The UMinnesota kids until the '79 NCAA. That group of NCAA eligible players born from 1955-58 who played from 1976-77 thru 1978-79 was every bit as good if not better than there counter parts born in 1955-58 from USSR, Czechoslovakia and Sweden. Czechoslovakia had essentially Peter Stastny from those birth years, while Sweden was definitely better with Kent Nillson, Thomas Gradin and several others. The Soviets had 2 D men born in '55 in Pervukhin and Bilayaletidinov and no forwards born 55-57!!! They had Malaria upfront born in '58 and Fetisov and Starikov from '58 on D. The US produced the best '55 iin the world in Mark Howe who could play forward and defense along with Mike O'Connell and Paul Holmgren. '56 saw Reed Larson and Morrow on D and Tom Rowe up front. '57 had Steve Baker in net along with Rod Langway and Gord Roberts on D and Joe Mullen and Mark Johnson up front. '58 produced Mark Pavelich upfront with Steve Christoff.

Al Michaels who was a part of the broadcasting crew of the hockey games had said about this game, that the United States was talking to the USSR hockey federation about having the game on later, but 5 pm was the time the game stayed at.Reason being was that at 5 pm on the east coast,it was 2 pm in the west coast.it was looked at at that time, 2pm no one would really home at that time ,thats how the head honcho of ABC looked at it .The same guy actually did consider having the game aired live at 5pm, though.what was interesting too, about the hockey games during the 1980 winter Olympics that were aired on ABC was that 3 out of the 7 hockey games played were actually aired in its entirety ,including the ''miracle on ice'' game, .ABC, that year in 1980, aired 51 hours of Olympic coverage in those 13 days with most of the daytime coverage falling on the weekend.

Sports are really strange. I remember thinking why doesn't the goalie go down on shots (butterfly) as a kid. I also remember thinking they should make bigger, but lighter pads for goalies. I also remember thinking why do NFL QBs plant their feet after throwing a ball only to get their knees snapped (Peyton Manning changed that). It's crazy how stubborn sports are and how long it takes them to change. Those players wouldn't have gotten half the goals with butterfly goalies nowadays.

The Soviet Union beat Finland 4-2 and Canada 6-4 earlier. When I think of the way the format was back then had Canada defeated Finland then Finland would have played Czechoslovakia instead of Canada for 5th place before the United States vs Soviet Union game and the United States would have faced Canada for the Final here instead of Finland. Either way I think the United States would have still won against Canada. But it would have been interesting. When the United States last won the Gold before this in 1960 they beat Canada in that Winter Olympics.
