I watch the Soviet match at least once a year. Every second of it. It was the most phenomenal underdog victory in sports history. I am so proud of those men and their coach.

Canada have 650000 hockey players! USA have 500000 hockey players! Ovechkin's Russia have only 80000 hockey players! Canada and USA should have 15 guys who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin today! Soviet League scoring leaders were in 1980 Shalimov 34 goals Drotzdetzky 31 Varnakov 30 Priodin 27 Lavrentjev 27 Only good Russian was in olympics 1980 Makarov 29! Lake placid 1980 had good players like Jari Kurri Peter Stastny Glenn Anderson Neal Broten! NHL scoring leaders were in early 1980s after Lake Placid Gretzky Stastny Kurri Anderson Broten! Broten had 105 points 38 goals NHL! Mark Pavelich had 37 goals in NHL! USA had More Ice hockey players and rinks in 1980 than Russia! Russia and USA have been trash in olympics in 1998-2014 no gold medals!

My youngest son was on that ice on the very day of the 40th Anniversary of the win over the Soviets. It brought back great memories for me. Been up there every year (except for 2021 - Covid) for the last ten or so years. Every time up there we get snow and more great memories - in the rinks, on the lake and throughout the town. Love that place.

The goaltender for Sweden was Pelle Lindbergh. Sadly he died in a car crash in 1985 a few months after winning the Vezina Trophy and leading the Flyers to the Cup finals. That gave me chills. He was a pioneer for European goaltenders in the NHL.

First time I’ve seen this clip and one of the things that impressed me the most was seeing members of the Sweds and the Russia’s not just shaking the hands of the USA team members but “hugging them”. Now that is what TRUE sportsmanship is about.

I was in the military when Mark said this. It was surprising and inspiring. It wasn’t a cool thing to be in the military in those days. We were treated like garbage by our own people. This win and Mark’s comment helped restore my enormous sense of pride for being an American. RIP Mark. I truly believe you were suffering from untreated CTE. I hope you have found the peace in death that you couldn’t find in life. When I get to heaven I’m going to look for you to shake your hand and call you a hero.

Thank you for posting this and for the benefit and information of you and others who view this and to refresh your memory, the words of our national anthem were written by Francis Scott Key in the aftermath of the British attack on Baltimore's Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 when he saw the American flag still waving over the fort that morning and below are Mr. Key's words if you want to look them over while listening or sing along as you stand with your hand over your heart. The anthem begins at the 18:10 mark. O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

In retrospect, that final ice hockey match between Finland and the USA, was just as important as the stunning "Miracle on Ice" victory! Had the USA lost that match against Finland, the USSR would have collected the gold medal! They overwhelmed Sweden 9-2! Herb Brooks was correct when he reminded the team that if they lose this match, they will regret the loss for the rest of their lives! THANK GOD THEY WON 4-2 OVER FINLAND! That victory was more than just a hockey gold medal! That moment in time inspired the American people and the free world!

It was just a scheduling thing. In no other way you can win a silver. Since it was a medal round with four top teams playing once against each other, it was just a fluke that Soviets-Sweden was the final game of the tournament, and gold was settled earlier.
