I've seen this anime and the original comics hundreds of times, but I'm sure this is the one of the best episode for me. And the other two episodes haven't come out yet!!!! "I'm nothing but average" This breaks my heart because I think every athlete who played some level of competitive sports has had this moment where they realize that he or she is just average. But Tanaka's mentality feels like a shout-out to all athletes. The world is moving forward. You can wallow in your shortcomings or give every ounce of energy you have to overcome them.

Y'know, I just realised something pretty cool, despite it seeming kinda... random, for lack of a better word? When you really think about it, Oikawa and Tanaka struggled in very similar ways, despite being in different positions of skill, personality, etc. Oikawa was looking at a goal he saw far above him in Kageyama, Ushikawa... "geniuses." This kept him down. For Tanaka, he looked at his team for comparison, to declare himself "nothing but average." This kept him down. But how do they work through it, in the end? Oikawa understands that if he doesn't keep pushing, then he may never see his talent bloom. He'll never truly know whether he was good enough. But if he does, then so long as he believes it, that day will come. Tanaka understands that, while he may be "average" right now, that's no reason for him to stop pushing. As long as he keeps trying until he can, then he will. Both prove it to themselves in those very same matches. From Oikawa's long set, to Tanaka's cross spike, I'd like to believe those were the moments they began to evolve even further as players.

I also love that Ennoshita mentioned how Tanaka would let it go if Kiyoko asked him to :") A small but necessary detail, especially since Tanaka's and Nishinoya's crush used to be mostly comic relief in the beginning of the series

When Kanoka said "straightforward and honest" literally translated from the word "真っ直ぐ(massugu)" but in Japanese also have a meaning for persistence, focus and loyal on one thing no matter what. So, in the last play sequence Tanaka was trying over and over no matter what happened, that would mean he won't give up on someone he likes no matter what. Many people missed this point because of the literal translation, I guess 😅
@CinJyxxe

@@TrianaNero This, I think, is the key detail. Without this, Tanaka is just a bit of a creep who doesn't know how to take 'no' for an answer. But knowing that all it would take is for Kiyoko to say she disliked his behaviour for him to stop makes it feel more like courtship. It isn't that Tanaka doesn't know how or when to quit, it's just that he's not ever going to be the one to make that decision about the things he wants.

Tanaka's final sharp angle shot didn't just come out of nowhere -- ever since he saw Bokuto's sharp angle from summer training camp, he has been practicing it! There were several scenes in previous episodes of Tanaka imitating Bokuto's arm swings and trying it in practice games -- he has prepared for this moment! This episode never fails to get me cry I relate so much to Tanaka's frustration from time to time and his monologue just saves me from falling deeper into bad feelings.

That is one of my favorite details in rewatching Haikyuu, way back in season 2 when he saw that cut shot from Bokuto, he loved it so much and he's been trying it and failing a lot. I think he hit it once but it did not have as much power and authority as it just did in this moment. That's how you do character writing, development and building towards an epic moment and it was all happening in the background. Haikyuu is everything!

Another fun fact about Tanaka. He is the only player who has played every single minute of every single game for Karasuno starting from the practice match against Aoba Josai in Season 1 Episode 6-7 to this match. If you're curious about the rest of the starting players: Nishinoya and Asahi re-joined the club after the Aoba Josai practice match. Daichi got subbed out due to injury vs Wakunan Kageyama got subbed out vs Johzenji (nosebleed) and Shiratorizawa (Fatigue) Hinata got subbed out for Narita vs Johzenji (because Suga was the setter) Tsukki got subbed out vs Shiratorizawa (finger injury)

i genuinely think one of the reasons this episode is so emotional is because it’s so genuine, tanaka is the representation of real life players on the court when they’re up against stronger people. I'm not an athlete, but every day at work at 5 pm I get lazy to answer my colleagues in a lively voice. I think it's a really great ability for someone when keep making mistakes, losing his stamina, and mentally struggling as an athlete, but to constantly encourage their teammates like "Nice Receive! Fine Play!" and to show great play without giving up. Deep down in Tanaka's heart, he thinks he's an ordinary guy but he's been a person who's constantly trying to acquire something more than that ordinary, and that effort finally made him who could never be ordinary.

Sarah's on fire with the guesses this episode. I honestly have never seen any reactor got the gist of what Broken Heart means that early. Some just don't get it at all. About Hinata's encouragement, I remember someone pointed out that he'd hesitated what to say and how to say it to Tanaka back in the Seijoh match but this time, he didn't even falter and just jumped straight in with the compliments. "My average self...do you really have the time to look down like that?" One of my favorite lines in Haikyuu because hard work beats talent every time. It's just so relatable because if you're just average and seeing all these freaks of nature around you, the only option you have to keep up with them is to show up time and time again which I think Tanaka embodies. It's also represented in Oikawa's line in S2E24 "Instinct is something YOU polish, talent is something you MAKE bloom." Anyone has the ability to go above and beyond and it's inspiring scenes like this that really drive that message home.

Tanaka is really the one I respect the most in this whole anime. He is just so.... good and genuine. He is loyal to the core, he is so determined and just simply a really amazing person. From his feelings for Kiyoko, to his consideration about Kanoka and then his loyalty for his team, his determination. I would absolutely love to have his presence around me.

This is my favourite Tanka episode. He had so much character building in this episode especially when he saw the strength in Daichi, Asuma, and Suga's eyes after hearing the slander against the team and thinking they were not taking it seriously. Also How even when he thinks he is just average and is down how he decides to get back up and never give up.

A lot of reactors and myself were pissed that Nishinoya made that pass but like Sarah said it is literally his job, also I really love Tsukishima in this episode. Anyone else in Karasuno , bar maybe Kageyama because he would have seen a cooler attack, passes that ball to Tanaka. Tsukki didn't get sucked into that and went for the Ace. However when you find out that he did take Tanaka's feelings into consideration and KNEW that Tanaka's mental toughness will see him through. And at the end when Tanaka shrugs it off and Tsukki tells him that it is not that easy to shrug off feeling depressed, but you can see that he admires how Tanaka can do it? Tsukki you lovely salty volleyball idiot

I really love this episode. I get praises back and forth from my previous managers/bosses at work. I've had a lot of awards at the office for being a top employee. However, every time I see the posts of my friends on their social media accounts, I felt that I'm left behind. Some of them purchased their own house, car, etc. They travel a lot. And here I am, not doing anything substantial in my life. I lost my savings when my mom caught it an accident twice. I'm living my life without any purpose at all. I can't help diving into negativity, trying to fix a lot of mess in my life. That's the reason why Tanaka inspired me the most when it comes to moments like this. He's not afraid of anything. Despite of his weakness, he faced every challenge head-on.

This episode... I recently was having my toughest battle with depression. Thing are so tight and we're working so hard, I manage several people and I care so much about them bu I was getting burnt out, I slipped so far into depression couldn't stop thinking about suicide... No one could guess I'm always smiles and positivity. I wanted to give up, I felt worthless and admitted to myself I'm just average how did I even get promoted. Haiykuu and it's many points on perseverance echo in my head, and this scene rallied me not give up and to push forward, focus on things I could control to improve my mental state. Push my self and be the strength for my team. When I watch this I empathize so much, I feel like I experienced the same. I'm doing 100% better, I'm managing my mental health, I'm killing it with my team and we are doing great 👌🏾

Sarah your reactions are TOP TIER! You understand the characters. You understand the game. You understand the story. Beyond that you ENJOY it just the same as we do! I’m so amazed at how quickly you connected the title of the episode to who it was referring to. Everybody is cheering and feeling the high of Karasuno’s win through Tanaka’s point, but Kanoka is hit with the reality of heart break in the same point 😭😭

The way Sarah is reacting to the episode really shows the quality of both Haikyu and Sarah. She as someone truly understanding Volleyball making so many correct calls before they happen, speaks of how realistic these scenes are. And also props to her for noticing that many details, remembering all the names and understanding so many concepts that were only hinted at. I think she understood the love relation even before the final scene with kanoka, which is mind boggling. I didn't grasp the situation until Kanoka said that she got her heath broken and even then I had to rewind

Yet another of my favorite episodes in the series. The emotional impact of this one is right up there with the post-credits restaurant scene after the loss to Seijoh in season 1. IIRC, that was the only other episode (besides in Run With The Wind) that made Sarah cry this hard, although the camera died during that one so we'll never really know. Still, this just perfectly shows why Tanaka is such an amazing guy and character. Love him.

I must have seen this chapter maybe 20 times, it moves me every time. Tanaka is incredible, that strength to follow, his shout, Kageyama smiles, he knows what Ryu is capable of, and we should all be able to feel that "I CAN DO IT". Always one of my favorite characters, it's incredible how everyone looks at him with admiration when he asks for the ball. Cap 10/10, Haikyuu is this. When you're sad, come back here. I think Tanaka is clearly well on his way to becoming the next ace for Karasuno. He may not have the raw size or power that Asahi has, but he's already developing a more diverse skill set, and definitely has the mentality for it. In another year, I could see him growing into a similar sort of ace as Bokuto, but without the mental weakness.

The intensity with which you watch the match in this show is so commendable. I really enjoy your reactions because they're based in experience as a volleyball player who has competed at the highest possible level this world has to offer, and your reaction is identical to that of a standard anime geek who knows nothing about volleyball other that what I've learned from this show.
