Takeda is spot on when he says that Kageyama is lucky to have met this particular group of very special seniors who have consistently supported and lifted him up. He might have been forced out of playing setter or shafted to a support role had he gone to Shiratorizawa like he originally wanted. I like the message conveyed here - that sport is also about the teams you meet along the way and the people you learn from.

The first scene with Nishinoya is really interesting to me, because it's a subtle reminder that Kageyama is not the only volleyball genius on the team. It would have been perfectly in character for Noya to escalate until Daichi broke up the argument, but instead, once Kageyama clarified what he meant, Noya mentally played back his position relative to the others and instantly realised that Kageyama was correct. Not only is that some incredible game-sense and spacial awareness, but his response makes it clear that he does not intend to repeat his mistake. No excuses, no defending himself, just acknowledgement of his error and returning to the game.

Kageyama is also fresh from U19 national camp where he played different positions other than setter. Kageyama had a moment of admiration for the Libero rolling out of his attack path when he was playing left wing. Kageyama noted how awesome it was that not only did the libero make a great play on the ball but he also had the presence of mind to roll out of the way after. Nishinoya made a great play and was admiring his own work instead of thinking of how he could continue to aid his teammates.

Hinata "crowning" Kageyama as the King of the Court is one of those magical moments in anime that brings a character arc full circle, it's the validation Kageyama needed the most but never realized it. It's too bad they missed the chance to show Hinata wearing the Queen's crown like I think they did back in season 2. The King may be the most important piece on the chess board but it's the Queen that commands the most attention!

I would like to point out that even when Kageyama is having his mini breakdown, it's still different than middle school. In middle school, it is more commanding. "Move faster. Jump higher. Match me to win." Here is closer to pleading. He knows he is a good setter and giving them the tosses they want, so he says, "Please just score"

yep! Atsumu's point was that Kags adjusted too far to the point where he was covering for his own hitter's short comings and laziness. I love how Hinata is the center of everyone here (well he is the main character anyway lol), he has such a good communication skill for being able to talk to Kageyama and Tsukki like that 😂 I don't know if people in other country but it's quite complex here in Japan because we have kinda strict relationship between junior and senior, I know in this episode seems more focused on how Kageyama talk to the seniors, but it's the same the other way too, if any seniors speak up to Kageyama, it could sounds intimidating or kinda sounds lecturing no matter how they talk to him, whether it's harsh like Tanaka or soft like Asahi, but if Hinata speaks up they're in the same grade so it's easier for Kageyama to digest and also for the seniors to realize Kageyama's condition. So, great job Hinata for being a mediator for everyone here. Tsukki is just the same as Kageyama, I'm glad Hinata point him out too to stop being childish 😂 Also I love how Hinata is speaking about others' growth but he didn't realize that he's growing up too just like what Suga said 😌

It's really important to how HUGE Kageyama's trauma was (you can call it PTSD, as we saw him make nightmares about it). It has always restrained his improvement, while his technical skills are already otherworldly. Once he overcomes it, he's unstoppable (you never really recover from a big trauma, but you can overcome the difficulties).

I love this episode! I wanted to point out a few things that connected to Kageyama from prior episodes. I wonder if you remember in episode 5 when Kageyama said during the training camp 'Everyone here is so good I feel like I'm rising to their level'. I think that he was being pushed to his limit there and seemed to be enjoying it so much because of that. I think that's one of the reasons he wanted to push the Karasuno members to the limit, only he didn't know how to communicate properly with the team besides Hinata. And Hinata and the rest of the team helped with that. Speaking of the Kageyama-Hinata relationship: Hinata is the only one on the team that has experienced his King of the court nature, since he was proper to rest of his teammates and wouldn't critique anyone except Hinata. Hinata knows how beneficial it has been for his game to have things pointed out to him by Kageyama even if as Hinata says 'he has an issue with tone'. So he knows his being King of the court can be of great benefit to the entire team as it was for him and is definitely holding Karasuno back from being the best it can be. It also reminds me of S1, when Kageyama told Hinata that there's nothing wrong with being a decoy. Now Hinata is telling Kageyama that there is nothing wrong with him being the King of the court and finally setting him free of his traumatic past. Also, I waited for this episode to be able to comment this: Did you know that the opening for the first half of the season is called 'Pheonix'? I think it's because both Hinata and Kageyama have been reborn in a sense. Hinata with his new perspective on volleyball and Kageyama reborn as the new King of the Court.

I love how much growth happens in this episode! Also, now that everything is out in the open, I can finally say this - Atsumu wasn't trying to get under Kageyama's skin or throw him off with his goody two shoes comment. He was making a very valid observation, and one that he saw was actually hampering Kageyama's potential to bring his team to even higher levels. Kageyama had been adjusting to accommodate all of Karasuno's hitters - in both a good and bad way. Now he's going to learn to find a happy medium between his old junior high way of doing things (only expecting his hitters to match whatever he wanted to do) and the way Oikawa taught him (adjusting your sets to what each hitter tends to do the best at). Truth be told, Oikawa probably didn't intend for him to swing so hard in the opposite direction that he stopped making his hitters adjust at all, since Oikawa himself does make his hitters push themselves sometimes, but Kageyama being Kageyama, he probably took it too literally.

One thing I'd add about Datekô next year is that as opposed to Karasuno, their 3rd years have already left the team. So when the next inter-high comes around, their team will have already played as a unit for a year (whereas other teams will need to adapt to 3rd years leaving, integrating new 1st years, etc.. in just a few months.) This is one of my favorite episodes of Haikyuu! Love the fact that Hinata was first to come to Kageyama's aid while he was still adjusting this episode. Hinata since episode 1 admires Kageyama for being the King of the court despite that nickname carrying a negative impact on Kageyama. Through out all the Seasons Kageyama never stopped being the 'King' when it comes to Hinata, he always calls out Hinata whenever he makes a mistake. We just get used to it since Hinata usually just takes it cause of his hunger to improve and its often played for laughs. Hinata even got pissed at Kageyama for backing down back at S2 training camp and that's been the nature of their relationship from the start, constantly pushing each other to be better.

People who knew me knew that I don't have bad intentions, but there were alot of people who just found my pompous and/or rude. After a bad wake up call in university, I overcompensated HARD, and ended up where Kageyama is now, overly mindful of tone, and turning myself knto a neurotic mess tiptoeing around people to avoid touching nerves, only to randomly blow up over the most minor of things. In a better place now, and seeing Kageyama walking down that same road has me symphatizing hard.

I am so happy you finally got to this episode! Last episode I commented that this is my favorite non match ep of haikyuu ever. I just love it for Kageyama because he got to reclaim the name King into something positive so he can finally let go of his past fully. He found the right balance between Oikawa and Atsumu’s advice about his attitude as a setter. This is of course with the help and understanding of Karasuno. After this ep, I kept thinking to myself the way Kageyama was holding off on his thoughts about everyone’s performance (as the best player of the team with a huge margin) and simply just adjusting to avoid conflict bc of his past is KINDA stunting their growth as a team and now they are all learning to communicate, not just Kageyama. His technical skill as a setter is already high enough as it is so I love that the training camp and ball boy for both him and Hinata is more of a training about their mental state and what they think of volleyball in general, and not too much about technicalities. Also, at this point the volleyballisms and lessons of the show this point forward is actually getting really technical because the anime thinks the audience is comfortable enough to understand it so I know I would love your future reactions to this season. Going back to Kageyama and Atsumu and the goody two shoes comment, I think a lot of his thought process was shown in the out of position drills. When he told Kageyama that he looks like he's having a better time playing spiker instead of setter, I think Atsumu was more trying to say "if it's not fun, why are you doing it?" He loves being a setter, so Kageyama looking like he's not enjoying it made him think he'd be better off playing a different position. Kageyama realized that his approach and his faith in his skill might be the wrong way to look at it, and compensated hard the other direction and becoming super accommodating to his team.

I can't stop thinking how great this foreshadowing is on how Date Kogyo becomes the Miyagi powerhouse to rival Karasuno. It's so obvious in hindsight, given how many 5 star seniors are rotating out. In a season where there are no Oikawas and Ushijimas, and with Karasuno's other 2nd and first years as the only pool for replacing Asahi, Suga, and Daichii... they're going to be a pain. I think this generation of rich talent is a 3-year spread from the current seniors to the current freshmen. Anyway this game is so good not only for setting all of that up, but also for all the growth being teased further; all the training paid off just a little, just a taste... making us hot for the tournament.

Another great, fun watch. Loved seeing more of Date-Kou, too. I really appreciate Sugawara's line at 19:14. I've read many comments here & there about how Kageyama was lucky to have come to Karasuno or that he was blessed with such understanding & patient teammates in high school, & that's why he's doing so much better than before. While I wholeheartedly agree with those comments, they also come across as "Karasuno members are so much more understanding teammates than those from Kageyama's middle school", & that always bothered me. 1st off, 3rd yrs in middle school couldn't be expected to be as mature as 3rd yrs in high school. 2nd, Karasuno members never had to deal with Kageyama as he was back then. & 3rd, it probably WAS because of what happened in middle school that Kageyama was trying to change/not be so bluntly demanding anymore, & without that experience, who knows how things would've been with Karasuno members as well, at least at the beginning. Gonna leave my personal opiniions about some of the subs as usual: 11:28 「じゃあ決めてくださいよ!」→ "Then make the damn point". Probably everyone's already aware, but though the tone of the original line is captured pretty well with this translation, the actual line was phrased in a respectable way, more like "In that case, may I ask that you DO make the shots count, please?". 18:36「影山ってぇ、意外とすげぇ気ぃ遣うよなぁ?」→ "Kageyama does worry quite a bit at times". The more literal translation for this would be "Kageyama does rather surprisingly tend to be careful around people, right?". Kinoshita's saying that Kageyama's being careful about the things he's voicing, despite how he seems to come off as someone who'd voice everything without care for what others might think. Not sure "worry at times" quite gets that point across... 19:34 「飛ぶっ!」→ "He jumped!". This is a nitpick, but Hinata is actually saying "He's *going to* jump/fly!" in anticipation for a higher jump than usual, seeing Tsukishima's set-up for the jump being obviously different from his usual form. 22:48「おまえはずっとそうだろ?」→ "You've always been that". I personally believe Sawamura is saying "You've always been that *way*" in response to Kageyama's line right before. Meaning "You've always been doing everything you can to become the best setter", not that Sawamura thinks that Kageyama's always been the best setter. 27:43「甘やかすな」→ "You don't need to spoil me". I was always under the impression that that line was NOT Asahi's response, but Sawamura saying "Don't baby Asahi", so I would change the "me" to "him".

Which I appreciate I also wanted to mention that the line of the coach from one of the earlier episodes "I want these players to go back home and be confused at the level of play there." This has always been one of my favorite episodes in the season. The growth and communication of everyone, Hinata being the one to constantly call out Kageyama when everyone doesn’t know the best approach to do it themselves, and Kageyama realizing it’s okay to be the king of the court. I love it all

Fun fact: in the original manga chapter for this practice match, it was supposed to be at Date Tech’s gym! So in the manga the Date third years showing up made total sense then hahaha. I’m assuming for budget pandemic reasons, the anime chose to put the match in Karasuno (so they didn’t have to draw new backgrounds maybe), which is fine for the most part EXCEPT when the Date third years crash it feels more inappropriate 😂😂 P.s. i actually love this mini post training arc, even tho the directing and pacing are mildly janky haha. Also i used to think Asahi’s new look was ok, but the fandom really blew up about how s4 did Asahi’s hairline dirty and now i can’t unsee it 😅

This is why I extra love the Junior High incident. It's really not a good memory, and it traumatized Tobio, but IMO, he wouldn't be so humble and receptive like he is right now if it wasn't for that incident. And how blessed he is that his seniors consciously or maybe subconsciously helping him process that trauma in the right and positive way (coz RIP Kazuyo-san) Now, he's finding and growing the right way as a setter and as a human being. Lol. 🥹🫶🏻

Kageyama's character development keeps happening throughout the show, certainly, but this episode is special somehow. We see that he's finally comfortable enough with his teammates to critique them. He wasn't, before. He would yell at Hinata and bicker with Tsukishima, but that was basically it. Now they're a team, a family-I love the theme of found family in this series-and Kageyama is where he's supposed to be. Above all, I keep seeing glimpses of friendship between the first years that warm my soul, and I would sell a kidney to have more content about them just being teenagers together. On the romantic end... "So you *can* fly" is basically the whole bible for us Tsukishima/Kageyama shippers, the tension between them in this episode is wonderful.

Gah, this episode is so good! I was so worried the first time I watched it, but it is amazing and allows for Kageyama and the whole team to grow even more! I know this was supposed to be a bit more Kageyama centric, but personally I feel like Hinata keeps stealing the show this season XD I just love how he communicated what he noticed at the training camp with Tsukki to Kageyama, without him he might have not tried to set Tsukki higher so soon! And whenever Kageyama is too brash and straightforward, Hinata comes in clutch, keeping the mood lighthearted and keeping Kageyama grounded because he's never afraid to nitpick him and be just as blunt. Idk, I really love how Hinata is someone who can lift people up and solve conflicts in such a genuine, boyish way by just being himself :D Also loved how last episode ended on Kageyama and Nishinoya about to face off, but this episode dealt with it so quickly without Noya escalating the situation, because he is a great libero and always wants to look out for the team and help them and as soon as Kageyama explained what he meant, he accepted his mistake and that was it. I also love how Tanaka got mad on Noya's behalf haha, it's just like Daichi said, he can deal with someone being rude to him no problem, but he cares about his teammates being addressed correctly, idk, I liked that detail, it's really sweet :) Loved coach Ukai letting them figure things out even if it was in the form of fighting to some extent. I feel like other people might've been too worried and tried to squash it down immediately, making them bottle up those feelings, which would've come to the surface again in a way more explosive way later. This was such a healthy way to deal with the conflict tho and I love how they all expressed how they'd wanna be treated. Kageyama really is blessed with all these people on his team and Ukai and Takeda as the supervisors!

remember when he saw that libero for Itachiyama play at the national youth camp (the one with caterpillar eyebrows that was with Sakusa), he was comparing him to Noya and how he doesn't make rolling receives and leaves space for the back row hitters to run up and jump. Also Kageyama is socially awkward so he said it as best he could 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I've rewatched Haikyuu like 20 times already between reactions and individually, and I've never ever understood just how important this practice match is, not until you broke it down for us. It's easy to see Kageyama's issue with the team and his progress, but the growth as a team, everyone communicating and speaking out, I've always missed that. So thank you Sarah for the constant lessons :) You're definately one of the best ones in the business because of your unique perspective. Can't wait for nationals!

Kageyama's growth is a Classic Thesis + Antithesis = Synthesis Old Kageyama's Thesis: I gotta do the best theoretical set, and the attacker is the one that must figure how to hit the ball from there. Antithesis (Oikawa's Thesis): I gotta do the easiest to hit set for each attacker, regardless of the attacker flaws. New King Kageyama (Synthesis): Somewhere in between, I must set to make my attackers improve their flaws and eventually be able to hit the actual best sets possible. This is Kageyama going further in this "Setter Mindset" than Oikawa ever has, and also hints how good Atsumu is, because he saw this "wasted" potential in Kageyama, what Atsumu did to Kageyama isn't that different than the provocations Kageyama is doing to try to make his team mates do better.

I might be mistaken; I'm no expert! But I do think part of the reason the Dateko third years are taking the practice game so seriously is because there's no conference regular season play; the only "real" games are in the official tournaments, where a team might only play one game before the season is over. So practice games like this, especially against good teams, are probably given more weight and treated somewhat differently than an average practice or scrimmage. And also, despite having to retire as third years to focus on their studies, they still want to cheer on their team and still help them succeed -- it might come across as excessive, but I do find it pretty sweet haha.

To be fair to Dateko's third-years, in the manga, this match is happening at Dateko, so it makes sense for them to be there and cheering. Not sure why they switched it in the anime.

That's a good take. But for me, personally, I think it's bc at the camp, Kageyama tries hard to communicate with the hitters to accomodate them with their tendencies and habits with hitting. Whereas the theme for setters has always been trying to control the game with their sets, which was the essence of Oikawa and Atsumu bc instead of giving them tosses that the hitters want, both of them give the hitters tosses that help them improve or make them look good. And then it circles back to being called a goody two shoes

Kageyama and Kindaichi got a big regret for only one pass shot, when they were junior high students. A year later, their mind is recovered/rebuilt by Hinata's casual advise. (s4 ep5 and this ep.) If Hinata said advise at that time, their relationship didn't grow worse. Unfortunately, there wasn't a person like Hinata's heart-mind at Kitagawa Dai-ichi junior high.
