Walking you around the Olympus 35 SP and 35 UC, fixed-lens 35mm rangefinders similar to the Canonet QL-17. These cameras produce terrific images, delivering a huge return on investment.

1:14 no, it‘s either program auto (both shutter speed and aperture) or fully manual, sadly. No aperture ,nor shutter priority.

That tablecloth is starting to grow on me. The prices on the 35SP are really going up fast - I may have waited too long to get one. I really enjoy your videos, and I'm glad that I subscribed. All the best, David S.

Mr. Smithson, thanks for your very positive comment and sub. That's my wife's tablecloth...Pioneer Woman line, exclusively at Walmart. :-) Yes, prices on the SP are rising quickly, like that of the Canonet QL-17 GIII. The Nikon F6 is also going up fast. Others remain stable, like the Nikon F3 and F5. Strange how some catch fire and others remain stable. I saw a video recently from Mark Wallace. He switched from his trusty Canon 5D to a rangefinder. Other people have switched, too. I guess people are switching to rangefinder in general, regardless of analog or digital. Personally, I prefer the rangefinder over SLR, too. Thanks and be well.

The 35SP is nothing like the Canonet GIII. Different size, different metering, different auto modes, different exposure indicators in the VF, no metering compensation for filters. A different camera altogether.

I love my 35 SP. The light meters are inaccurate any as the newer replacement batteries are slightly higher voltage than the original mercury ones, so I also use mine in manual mode with great results

Greetings, Mr. Celebic. Yes, the 35 Electro is a great camera. Its aesthetics are awesome. Truly a place for it in the Design Hall of Fame, if such a place exists. I recently picked one up, too, the GSN. I will do a video on it soon. Trying to do a bunch of 110 cameras, weaving them in with 35mm. The photo of the shopping cart came out very contrasty, more so than the others. Thanks as always. I appreciate your kind and generous comments. Be well, sir.

Gee it is too bad that the meter does not work, as I also have my SP model but it is in Black, and bought in a camera store in San Francisco as I paid $49.00 for mine back as I also bought a Olympus RC for also $49.00 at the same when I bought the SP in 1991 so it was a good deal, even though that they were both USED as I was glad that they both work. I took the SP to Japan in 1992 as I shot ALL film with my Nikon's, and as for the SP I was very please of the results of the sharpness, and contrast and also IT WORKS, the only drawback is that the ISO goes up to 800 but that is Ok, and also that I read in the Olympus camera guide that on the SP that if you alinge the both A's from the shutter, and aperture ring that the SP Camera becomes a PROGRAM Feature model, meaning that when this camera was first introduce in 1969 to 1975, and then the UC model was also introduce as the UC just added the Battery check button feature other wise it is the SP model, as the UC also still had the ISO or as you classic shooters ASA also went up to 800. That also when the SP was introduce with Program feature mode was Olympus first feature mode to have this feature in which they were ahead of their time as that in 13 or 14 years later that will see it when Nikon, Canon, and Minolta (Now SONY)introduce Program modes in the early 1980's. So not only I have the SP but also the Olympus RC, and the XA1 as will be taking that model to Japan... And also I would not ever use a meter from a smart phone or tablet as I rather a good photo light meter, and the spot feature, that it is NOT a 1' degree spot it is more like a 6 to 10 degrees spot meter in which it came in handy when doing backlit image subjects but you have to go up to the subject, and also that my SP in Program Mode that it also has a Memory Lock feature but you have to hold the button, and hold the exposure as it is like the Nikon FE, and EL models I learn that in Japan. Also it synch at all speeds when using electronic flash that the 60 of second is only use for when using flash bulbs. As comparing with this model and the Leica M7, that I rather like shooting my SP due to that if the battery goes out it is still a working camera, and out comes my light meter, compare to the M7 that it is an ALL ELECTRIC BATTERY POWER M SERIES MODEL, As I am not a Leica hater, I like the M2 to the M6, but the M7 wrong choice of making this model Leitz. Good Video.

I also have two of them. They are fantastic cameras but in my understanding they are only either full automatic or full manual. NO SHUTTER PRIORITY NOR APERTURE PRIORITY.
@room111photography5
@room111photography5 3 жыл бұрын
Greetings, Carlos. By placing the aperture in "A" for Automatic and setting a shutter speed, the camera enters Shutter Priority mode. There is no A on the shutter ring, which means there is no Aperture Priority mode. So the two modes available are fully manual and Shutter Priority, with no fully automatic or Aperture Priority modes. To be fully automatic, the camera would need an "A" on both the shutter and aperture dials. A user would place them both on A and then the camera would choose a corresponding shutter and aperture for the user. Thanks and be well. Best wishes to you.

@@room111photography5 Great post, but I believe you are mistaken about the programs of the 35SP. The original manual DOES NOT mention nothing but fully automatic (AA) and fully manual, and I don't think that if there was such a thing like a "shutter priority" mode they would miss to mention it as yet another program function. So no, I don't think that setting "A" in the aperture ring guarantees the camera set automatically the proper aperture to suit exposure. Best!

finally something useful on those stupid smartphones: free app = light meter. Q: is in yr experience the light meter accurate? Thanks for the great review :)
@room111photography5
@room111photography5 5 жыл бұрын
The apps vary. Some are good and some are quite bad. The apps are good at measuring incident light but cannot measure reflected light too well. The internal camera meters measure reflected light, which itself requires qualification. If you set to spot, center weighted, or matrix/evaluative you can achieve three different meter readings. Unless you're at White Sands, NM I recommend using incident light and just tweak the final exposure in post. But slide film is very sensitive and you have to nail the exposure. Negative film is forgiving and you can tweak in post. This answer requires a lot of nuance or branches.

Beautiful shots. Thanks for sharing these. May I ask, after you develop the film yourself, do you just scan the negatives for computer or do you send out for prints?
@room111photography5
@room111photography5 6 жыл бұрын
Greetings, Dave. Thanks for your kind and encouraging words. I don't get prints, I just scan the negatives using an Epson V600 scanner. A couple of qualifications: different films behave differently in development and scanning. For instance, Kodak TRI-X B&W is extremely dusty. Much effort must be made to clean the negatives in final rinse with distilled water, and even then there is a lot of post-production in Photoshop using content-aware healing tools to remove the dust. Kodak's Portra and Fujifilm's PRO 400H are wonderfully clean. These film stocks have almost no dust whatsoever on the negatives, so scanning requires very, very little cleanup with Photoshop. Some films also scan with a very heavy bluish cast, so a lot of tweaking is necessary with white balance/color temperature in post. E-6 slide/positive/chrome/reversal/transparent (whew!) film is a joy to work with. It is not dusty and scans beautifully. It is extremely easy to develop and scan. I would say E-6 is the most photographer-friendly in terms of development and scanning. In summary, every film stock has its own personality and the joy in all this is getting to learn the different films and their strengths and weaknesses. It's a blast. Much enjoyment. I don't send any film stocks out for prints, just scans for display on monitors. On the other hand, when I used to shoot models, about once a year I treated myself to a 24" x 36" poster for an image that really blew me away. Just edited them in Lightroom and Photoshop and uploaded them to Walgreen's. Went to the physical store and picked them up a few hours later. No pro labs. Just Walgreen's and I was very happy with the results. Sorry I went long. Trying to give you a glimpse into my thinking and photo processes.

Thanks for the reply. I just came across your channel and really enjoying it. My brother and I used to develop B&W from a Minolta SRT101, 40+ years ago. I have not shot film for a really long time but your channel may get me back into it including color developing, which is something I never really considered. Thanks again.

@@room111photography5 great that you 'went long' in yr answer! very helpful info! I am getting back to film, somehow do miss the 'thrill' of my own work and processing I used to have with film (carried my darkroom around for 25 years). Just a q: what did you mean with 'content-aware healing tools'? is that specific for Fotoshop (I never used Photoshop). And then the V600 > was there a reason you choose that 1 over say the 750?

@@TheMrBennito Hello, Mr. Bennito. The content aware healing tools make it very easy to correct things such as dust in film and dust on the sensor of a digital camera. Back some years ago one had to use the clone tool and it was hit and miss. Nowadays the content aware healing tools make it very easy. Regarding the scanner, any from the Epson line should serve you well. Thanks.

Yes, the one I downloaded was free from the Apple Store. Are you using Apple or Android? Also, It is free because it has advertisements that appear once in a while within the app. The one you refer to -- the paid version -- should be without advertisements.
