Fantastic straight forward, informative, no bs review. Thank you. As a professional M43 user, I originally struggled to see the use of this lens, but I can definitely see it filling in some of the deficiencies of the Pana 14-140mm f.3.5 for a solid walk around travel lens.

Very informative review, as always. Nice lens, good fit for the EM1MkII, but together they're around 2.500€. At that price there are other combos to consider, given that the size and weight are not that different and Olympus still has some drawbacks. But another great lens choice for people already in the M43 system. Take that, Sony.

There is one lens which seems to be attractive for MFT, both as it is and both from a price point of view, but hardly reviewed - the Tamron 14-150mm. f/3.5-5.8. Perhaps you can comment or maybe even review it? I think many are interested in it!

Do you still have and use this lens? Do you still feel this lens as having room in the m43 universe, and does it still make sense in the current Camera and Lens universe with so many new releases? I ask this because I always had this lens on my radar and I always waited for prices to go down to buy it, but prices never went down and I never bought it. Do you still consider this lens a good buy as a travel and multiuse lens? We work with Nikon (Apsc and Z) and Olympus and have a lot of m43 equipment, including the Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 and 14-140mm and Olympus 40-150mm f2.8, which overlaps the 12-100. Thanks for another great review! You guys are amazing and have a very pleasant way to present your videos and talk! Competent, polite, affectionate with the audience and straight to the point. Thank you very much and all the best to you! My wife and I are photographers in southern Germany and we love your work.

Thank you for the kind words! About the 12-100mm, the review sample was loaned to us by Olympus for two weeks. I never bought the lens, not because I don't like it but simply because I don't buy gear for my personal use very often (I always have something else to review, so too much personal gear would sit on the shelf collecting dust). But I still highly recommend it, it's such a versatile lens, and the IS is amazing.

I am a big fan of Olympus cameras and have been using them for sometime now. While I don't own the 12-100, I do use the 7-14, 12-40 and 40-150mm Pro lineup. I love the quality of all these optics with the 40-150mm f2.8 being my favourite. My only complaint is that while advertised as "freeze proof" the 12-40 f2.8 Pro gets very stiff at sub zero temperatures. I live in northern Canada and routinely venture out on lengthy winter hikes. In the past, I would take my E-330 and E-30, along with various Zuiko lenses, in temperatures as low as minus 40 C without ever experiencing problems. Last year, I took the OM-D E-M1 and 12-40 Pro out to film a sled dog race. It was a balmy minus thirty but the lens was impossible to zoom in that temperature. The zoom ring simply would not rotate without applying considerable force, something I did not want to do. This winter, I have taken it out into minus 15 degree temps, and while it works, the zoom ring is already displaying some resistance. It is interesting to me that the older plastic bodied optics such as the excellent 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 never demonstrated this sort of issue. I suspect the problem is a result of the metal bodies and it leaves me very reticent to use my 7-14 or 40-150 in those conditions despite the "freezeproof" claim. Have you tested any of these new lenses in similar low temperatures?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 6 жыл бұрын
I've tested a few of them in winter temperatures but nothing too extreme (-5° or -7°C, something like that). Does it happens with all Pro lenses or just the 12-40mm?
@yukonchris
@yukonchris 6 жыл бұрын
I have generally avoided taking the other two out in temperatures below minus twenty-five (I've owned both the 40-150 and 7-14 for less than a year). I had all three out today at a place called Fish Lake, just northwest of Whitehorse. It was exactly minus twenty-five degrees, so I took special note of the performance of the 12-40. Frankly, it was a little stiff but functioned fine. As it turned out, the other two lenses remained in my bag so I didn't evaluate them in the cold. The problem with the 12-40 seems to become acute at about -30C. At that temperature, it really doesn't want to zoom. Having said that, I suppose it is a reasonable thing to expect. I was spoiled by the exceptional performance of the older Zuiko Four-Thirds lenses I owned, which seemed to function flawlessly at temperatures even below minus forty. I do recall getting an instant cold burn on my fingers once a number of years ago when I picked up an aluminum tripod at about minus forty-five, but my E-30 and associated lenses were still working well. Anyway, cheers for the reply.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 6 жыл бұрын
I think the official rating is -10°C for the Pro lenses. It's possible to use them at lower temperatures than that but I guess -30°C is the very limit for the 12-40mm. If one day you get the chance to use another Pro lens at those temperatures, it would be interesting to see if it behaves the same or not.
@yukonchris
@yukonchris 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mathieu, some good news. I took the 40-150 out today for about a half hour at minus fifteen. It functioned absolutely perfectly without any stiffening to the focus or zoom rings at all. This leads me to think that the deep cold issue I noticed is is limited to the 12-40mm.

The obvious question for me is, if this lens is everything which can be desired, what is the point of the 12-40mm lens? Presumably the point of that lens is that, with the shorter the zoom range, fewer compromises need to be made in its design - with the fewest compromises being with a prime lens.

Hello good evening! I am really impressed with the images of the video, specifically with the photos taken by hand with exposures of 4 to 20 seconds. How do you get it? I have this lens a couple of days ago along with a new OM-1 and I can't take well-focused handheld photos with more than 2 seconds of exposure. How is it possible to take a photo of more than 4 seconds without moving the least bit and getting that sharp image? Help me please! This is going to take away my sleep and years of life :-P

I know, what I meant is if the actual exposure (not the aperture) keeps exactly identical and continuous across all the range from 12 to 100 mm... Without any small, noticeable changes like the 14-42 mm F3.5-5.6 (which I know it's variable). Thanks for the answer anyway!

Hello thanks very much for this great video. Kindly advice which lens of the two (oly 12-100 f4 & Leica 12-60 f2.8-f4) would be ideal for shooting mainly music videos and short films with GH5S if price and weight is not as issue? If Leica, then it will be kept constant at f4 most of the time. I like and prefer oly over Leica but someone suggested that Leica is optically better/sharper than oly pro lenses. Would that be true? I want to get one good zoom lens for now and will try to add cine primes later on. Kindly advice. Cheers.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 6 жыл бұрын
For music videos you may want to work with a faster aperture, you should consider the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8. I don't think Leica DG lenses are superior optically. The 12-60mm is a good lens but the aperture varies as soon as you start to zoom in. The 12-100mm is a great lens for travel as it has a very versatile range, but f/4 for indoor shots is not ideal unless the scene is very well illuminated. If you mostly work outside then it's a different story.

Mathieu Gasquet Hello thanks very much for your kind reply. I like the olympus 12-100 and will use it only it GH5S which has dual native ISO as you know and it's very good in low light. But is the oly 12-100 optically very good? I think nowadays all these pro lenses has great image quality and features. I heard that it produces very nice filmic creamy look good for filmmaking? Also it's range and weight will come handy even for stabilisation with GH5S for handheld shooting. I think oly 12-100 seems very good all rounder lens for travelling as well as for good quality image for music videos and narrative filmmaking. Yes indoor locations will have good lighting as per cinematography needs. Thanks & Regards.

I have a question about this lens. I know if you add it to EM1 Mark 2, you get 6.5 stops instead of 5.5 stops of IS. But what if you add it to lets say EM1 mark 1. Can you get 5 stops of IS instead of 4 stops. Another words, does it add 1 stop of IS to any body other than EM1M2 or it only holds true with EM1M2?

I bought the 12-100 F4, despite the F4 aperture (F8 FF equivalent). I made the plunge because I thought the built-in stabilization will offset the need for a fast shutter speed. But so far, the lens is very disappointing. After a month+ use, I find many of my photos are blurry (using with an Em-1 m1 body), but still.. it would make sense that any moving subject would be blurry, the lens settles at roughly 20-50/sec shutter speed when turned on. Only a high ISO can bring the thing up to speed. (A) mode. Also many of the photos are a little distorted and not flattering. I took several shots of women in bikinis.. Unlike the 14-150 which compresses... this one seems to shrink, and distort funny. I think its good for landscapes, perhaps. But not people. And especially if the people are moving. Just my 2 cents.

It can be a good match on a Panasonic camera but you need to be aware of a couple of limitations: - the AF won't be as fast as with Panasonic lenses because DfD doesn't work with Olympus lenses - you can't use Dual IS, so it's either the in-body stabilisation or the optical stabilisation on the lens.

Have you tried this lens lately on a Panasonic body that has in-body IS like the GH5 or G85??? If so, how well does it work in that scenario? I assume you have to use one or the other in that setup....either the IS in the lens or the IS in the Panasonic body. Do you have to turn off the in-body IS on a Panasonic or does it just know an Olympus lens is connected and won't try to use in-body IS unless the IS switch on the lens is off? I guess I'll find out soon enough because I just bought one to go with my GH5! ;-) Curious if anyone has any experience with this setup though.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 жыл бұрын
You're assuming right, you would have to choose between the in-body stabilisation or the lens stabilisation. I don't remember how the IS switch behaves but I think the camera gives priority to the optical stabilisation if it is On.

If I may, having a 12-100, and both an E-M1 mk II and an E-M10 mk II, yes, the lens fits the 10.2. But you don't want to carry that combination : - You're wasting an expensive lens on a cheap "low" resolution sensor, and the 10.2 body isn't even weather sealed like the lens - As pointed out, forget Sync IS - The 12-100 is HEAVY, you need the grip of a pro body to be comfortable - The balance on the 10.2 is very very very front heavy - The camera so equipped doesn't rest flat on surface, the girth of the lens barrel is too big I wouldn't consider that combination except as an expedient in emergency. I shoot my 10.2 with "consumer" primes (the f/1.8 range). They complement the small body form factor perfectly and they're a joy to use in the street. The 12-100 + E-M1.2, I use during travels and in nature. If you really want a do-it-all zoom, look at the 12-200. It's a much more consumer friendly zoom, and the image quality is "enough" for the 10.2, with more manageable dimensions. If you're set on the 12-100 and you don't own a pro body yet, if your budget is tight, the original E-M1 while still a 16 Mpix camera would much better accommodate the lens and can be had for a song nowadays (about as much as a 2nd hand 10 mk II, for about the same capabilities in a much tougher body, roughly).

I wanted to ask if the IS build into the Olympus lenses will be compatible with the IBIS in the Panasonic body? Resulting in 6.5 stabilization stops. @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 6 жыл бұрын
+Matt no IBIS + Lens IS only works with Panasonic body + Panasonic lens. If you want to use the 12-100 on the G9, you have to choose either the IBIS or the optical stabilization. Also take into account that the DfD AF is not the fastest with Olympus lenses.

Ok, thank you for clarifying that for me! So if I wanted to get a good all-rounder Panasonic lens what would you recommend? I'm looking for the widest aperture as possible, a well-built metal lens with quiet, fast AF and weather resistance. Having in lens Stabilisation is a bonus, but not on the top of my importance list. I need an all-rounder lens that takes crisp sharp high-quality photos but doesn't compromise on build quality. That being said, do you think that the Olympus lenses or Panasonic lenses take better pictures in general? And do you think olympus or panasonic lenses are built better? Thank you again!!

The Olympus Pro series has exceptional build quality but the recent Pana-Leica series does really well too. A good all rounder is the DG 12-60mm f2.8-4. On a personal note, I have the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 and it's one of my favourite zoom ever. On Pana bodies the AF slows down a little (especially in low light) but unless you're planning to shoot sports or very fast action, the performance remains more than acceptable.

But it's these average amateur unsuspecting consumers who believe in everything that the advertisement brochure says and thereby ruining their photography and the equipment in the process. Sorry, if you find this too persuasive but i strongly feel that something needs to be done to prevent such falsities being propagated so blatantly.

Did you actually use any of these lenses? I have the 12-40mm 2.8 Pro which extends when zooming and I've been owning one since 2014. I've used it under rain, I had it covered in dust a couple of times, it even fell once and miraculously survived. So yes, it is weather sealed, robust and can maintain full weather sealing even when extended. The 12-100mm Pro is on the same level. So no, I'm not doing any disservice here.

@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Let me explain this to you in plain and simple terms. Whenever a lens barrel is extended while zooming, rain, moisture and other potential dust particles can settle on the extended portion of the barrel. And now when the lens is retracted back in its case, all those unwanted moisture, dust etc. are sucked into the lens body and eventually to even the camera itself. To deny this is to deny the "Laws of Nature and Science" and as such is simply incredulous!!! I am amazed you even argued on this point. Examples are not proofs and the fact that your 12-40 mm lens has survived the ill-effects of moisture-dust intrusion is no solace or guarantee that other people will have the same level of luck that you seem to possess!!! The fact is that "ANY EXTENSION MECHANISM IS INHERENTLY FLAWED IN SO MUCH AS IT LETS MOISTURE AND DUST IN THAT IT IS HIGHLY IMPRACTICAL TO CALL IT WEATHER-SEALED". Thanks for your patience.

I understand your concern and your reasoning, and surely an internal zoom mechanism feels more secure. All I can say is that I've tested many zoom lenses that are weather sealed and that extend when zooming in, and never had any problem. Once I was on a motorbike race track when a heavy storm with hail caused the race to stop. I was literally socked and so was the Fuji XF100-400mm that I was testing. That day I admit I was a bit concerned. I came back home, let it dry in a dry room with the zoom extended, got a few extra water drops out by zooming in and out the next day, and the lens kept working fine. There are many weather sealed lenses these days that don't have an internal zoom mechanism and I never encountered problems with it. I haven't heard any problems from other users either, at least that I'm aware off.

Is f stop usable indoors?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 жыл бұрын
Yes as long as you don't need to use decent shutter speeds to freeze movements. For an indoor wedding reception in the evening for example, this lens won't be fast enough.

Not possible I'm afraid. Different mount and it doesn't cover the APS-C sensor of your A6000.

If the micro four thirds mount has electronic contacts then yes it should. The only think that won't work automatically is the zoom.

I think most micro four thirds lenses should work fine on that camera. There are also manual focus lenses from Samyang that are available with a m43 mount.

Nice lens but too pricey for a F8 DOF... micro 4/3 lenses are getting too expensive and not getting any faster for a system really in need of fast aperture in my opinion!
@derekderekderek2
@derekderekderek2 6 жыл бұрын
Better to buy a fast prime for shallow DOF. One of the new Olympus 1.2 lenses or Voigtlander 0.95 lenses. This looks like a good lens for landscape where sharpness everywhere is a plus.

I Don't know why you and or Olympus Considers this a F/4 Constant Aperture? because its Not, Just as you mention in This Video, Its IQ Quality going through all the Various F Stops Now consider its Price POINT Is Just flat Out Rediculous At this Price a Smarter Choice would be 12-40mm F28 if we keep jumping out and accepting these prices they are going to keep pushing them and higher onto US, Vary Nice Detailed Review done Vary Well THANK YOU Mathieu Gasquet

Matthew White you would never find a high quality, optically stabalized, constant f stop, large range, weather resistant lens for $300. I could understand thinking it would be a lot nicer if it were priced closer to $750 or $800, but $300 is just in no way realistic.

hyperbole ?? It really is a bout value and for me its probably would not get used.. so 299 was well, .. again thanks for the response.. it is a great lens for those who want to shoot at f4 or smaller and want all the benefits these types of af lens give...

my point is an f4 lens is a huge compromise.. why not use two or three primes? well, there is the sticking point, many folks want the convenience of a do it all lens.. I really pretty much have stopped using my lenses that are not fast with a few exceptions, again my choice.. I can easily see someone who needed a af zoom liking it for outdoor bright shots.. again its what is needed but man that price!!!

I just don't understand how an f/4 lens is a for pros. I'm not trying to be elitist, regardless of how I sound, but it just sounds like an oxymoron to me. I'm probably wrong. I think that's my only complaint though.

PRO is mainly related to the series of lenses: they are all weather sealed and features the same characteristics (clutching focus ring, function button, etc).

Visually, what this lens delivers, is disaster. Why? Because there ARE other values to a lens, not only sharpness, sharpness, sharpness, and only sharpness! What about micro-contrast? Colour saturation? Bandwidth? What about softness required for pleasing portraits and pleasing OoF? This lens is designed for noobs - made to be so sharp, that all objects within a frame are forced into appearing sharp. It is disastrous - such sharpness compresses up the space, brings far and near objects way too close, and when looking at the images, they are incredibly flat - like miniature versions of the real world. I look at landscapes with boats, trains, mountains, all taken with this lens, and if the focus point was at infinity, they all appear like miniature sets for stop motion animation projects! This lens must be used with >>utmost care
