My personal thoughts on this often overlooked lens. Plenty of sample images, with a quick tour of Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral thrown in for good measure! Track: Flying Music by www.fiftysounds.com

I have 2 of this lens, one for me and one for my wife. With the macro function and the difference between 42 and 50 the lens is a no brainer. Enjoyed your take on it.

Hi Alan, I originally acquired this lens with my first EM1 mki in 2020, it didn’t really get much use and I sold it. When I was reviewing and archiving some images I was surprised how good this lens was. Well I was looking for an EM5 mki to try out and found one accompanied with this lens. I’m not sure whether I’ll keep the lens but for the time being I’m giving it another try. Thanks again Alan for showing us Liverpool

Thanks Alan, I'm pleased you're liking Liverpool. The 12-50 may not be as critically sharp as its pro cousin, but for me it does a great job. One of these days I'll invest in the 12-40 though!

Olympus rates the lens as splash proof so it should be fine in rain or snow. I have used mine in poor weather and it is now about 10 years old.

Thanks Ira, very helpful to have someones long-term view of that lens!

It’s definitely splash proof and can tolerate a lot of water. Robin Wrong posted a video of this lens about a year ago and he pours water all over it, so a bit of rain certainly won’t hurt. I think it’ll be fine in any weather the uk will throw at it anyway.

This was very helpful! I have the em5 (the first one) that I bought used a couple of years ago, and wanted a walk-around lens that gives me some weather-sealing, while still being light and affordable. Thanks to you and your helpful tips, I think I am going for a gently used copy of this. Thanks for your insights. I just subscribed to your channel.

Hello Kary and thank you for subscribing and commenting! I love this lens and I am sure that you will be more than happy with one. Coupled to your E-M5 it will make a great walk-around package.

Thank you very much. I use a Tamron 17-50 F 2.8 aspherical which I bought on ebay for USD 150. Probably one of the best lenses that I own.

Indeed Peter, that lens is excellent and it goes to show what bargains can be had!

Great review Alan. On these zoom lenses with a macro switch what is actually happening inside the lens, it seems to limit the focal length settings, but does it move the glass inside the lens?
@photographyforenjoyment Жыл бұрын
Hi Steve and thanks for the question. It does lock the focal length and then some (almost certainly a group at the rear) of the elements move to adjust focus. Sorry to sound a bit vague but I've not found a definitive answer as to which elements are involved!

Thanks Alan.

@@photographyforenjoyment I don’t know anything about vintage lens photography and did a little research after watching this video. FD lenses for the vintage look is what I discovered and those lenses are fully manual. My interest in photography started many years after those early days of vintage gear, I’m a digital dood and probably wouldn’t go out of my way to shoot vintage gear unless someone handed me a vintage camera and all I had to do was point and press. 😂😂👍🏻😂😂

I really enjoy your videos Alan, thank you for taking the time to make and share them. I don’t have any micro 4/3 gear, as you know I shoot Fuji “stuff”, so if it’s not too much bother, would you please ask Dexter (or señor Nicholas) if instead he can donate a Fujinon XF150-600, I would really like to have one. Be well, stay safe and I’m looking forward to your next video and tour of Liverpool.

Funnily enough Enrique, I heard Dexter got in trouble for gnawing on a certain 150-600 lens. Seems he mistook it for one of his toys, so with teeth marks on it, maybe Nick will let it go cheap?

Yes, you are quite right it has a rubber gasket around the lens mount and is marketed as being weatherproof

0:08 - I know Julian Lennon had some big shoes to fill, but it looks like he started early!! anyway, the lens. an absolute bargain by the look of it, its versatility and image quality. like you, I don't need a fast wide-angle and would go for the budget option over the f2.8. looking forward to the FD video :-)

Thanks Nick, the FD video will be down to your generosity!
