Join me for a look at the Olympus 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 ED EZ lens. I explain why I decided to try it out and review this M.Zuiko kit lens on a landscape photography shoot. I wanted to show you my first time using it and review both how it works for me in the field, and whether the quality of its images stacks up.
I'm close to home on a lockdown walkabout, but I've found some subjects which should test the limits of the lens' capabilities and give you a very good idea of how it might work for your micro four-thirds photography if you're on a budget. Is this ultra-light budget kit lens worth carrying if you need good walk-about or light-weight hiking pack gear for your landscape photography?
If you'd like to learn more about the Anglesey, Snowdonia and North Wales places I visit for my landscape photography, you can see full details on my website in my Location Guides section at: dgriff.gallery/location-guides/.
To join me for landscape photography workshops, personal tuition or guiding in the mountains have a look over this page: dgriff.gallery/tuition/.
I get asked a lot about the equipment I use. As I’ve typed up countless replies and links and lists for friends and viewers, I’ve now set it all out definitively here: dgriff.gallery/gear/.

I know this is an old video but it is FAR younger than the lens. Both remain relevant. This lens is the perfect "adventurer's lens." The eZoom + Macro makes it ideal for use in an underwater housing; the weather-proofing, focal range (+ macro) and size make it ideal for backpacking.

Spot on review Dave. Years ago I bought the very capable 12-50 to test out the m43 system and I was impressed enough to later upgrade to the 12-40 pro and 35-100 pro. I recently purchased one of your other recommendations, the 75-300. It’s slow, but I’ve been having great fun shooting birds in the back garden. Quite a bargain. Loved the vlog mate and those shots at the derelict cottage were excellent. Loved the window shot and the moody B&W. Hope all is well with you. I listen to the pub cast often and enjoy keeping tabs on my favourite group of vloggers. Cheers from sunny California where it never rains and the clear blue skies foreshadow another brutal wildfire season. ☹️

For the same reason in the mountains I use the Panasonic G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8, much more expensive than your Oly 12-50mm but smaller still and spectacularly sharp. I always take that little Laowa 7.5mm out now, I don't even know it's there. Love that first building with the textures and colours and even the sky was pretty decent.

I must admit, Tony, I am currently mulling over the possibility of picking up an EM5 as a day-to-day walk about camera. It’s funny, when I first got into photography and a Nikon D3100 with the 18-55VR I really enjoyed the quest of photography. I added the 35mm 1.8 and a cheap Sigma 70-300 and captured some great photos. Then I got caught up in Gear and quite a way down the line (I won’t bore you with the number of camera changes 😂) I now have a Olympus E-M1 mk2 with 12-40 2.8 and 40-150 2.8 lenses which I have now owned for nearly 2 years. However the D3100 which I still have takes excellent photos. At the end of the day it’s not the equipment. The Olympus 12-50 will also produce great images, but it is the photographer that catches the moments.

You make a very good point. When I first started with digital photography after a 30 year sabbatical, I found that having entry-level equipment certainly exposed my own shortcomings more easily. Hello there. I own this lens for almost 6 years now and it's irreplaceable for me. I have the 12 40 f2.8 but for my type of work this tiny lens gives me more. I'm a car photographer and shoot more than 500 photos dayly. I can zoom one handed, I can run and gun to my heart's content. Images are sharp enough and only in certain circumstances I grab the pro lens. Macro function works great, and generally it's a treat to work with, if you have enough light. I would recommend this 100%

@@DGriffGallery thank you for your kind comment. Yeah.. the amount of work I gave dayly commands an easy to use system, and Olympus provides exactly that. It's a shame that this company have dropped so low in the eyes of the people. I can't say that other companies are less, but one has to know the right tool for the job and known the workarounds of it. I'm happy for my EM 5 MKII and my EM 1 original. This was the second lens I purchased, probably 10 years or so ago. (I had an Olympus PEN 5 that came with a 17mm 1.8.) and I haven’t used it in a while as I got dazzled by the Pro lenses. I remember liking it a lot though. I was a beginner back then, so I’m thinking I should get it out again and see what I can do with it now. If you are looking for lighter and smaller, this lens works great with the EM5. The EM5ii is a lovely little camera, and there are some bargains around since the mark iii version came out. Enjoyed the video very much. I am always interested in your approach to composition.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathleen, you are perfectly right to be dazzled by the pro lenses because they are extremely good quality. Something Olympus was always renowned for. This little exercise was very much about having a small compact and lightweight lens but which would still produce acceptable quality images. I think I've proved to myself that it certainly does that, so I'll feel less reticent about carrying it when I want to travel light. Serious work, though, will always be done with a pro lens! 😊👍

13:48 You, crouching down to photograph bulb flowers was exactly how I spent the first half of today. I was out myself at 4:30 this morning, taking pictures of the plum blossoms and daffodils in the mountains above Taura (田浦梅林) overlooking Tokyo Bay. I got so engrossed for so long crouching down to snap the daffs, when I went to stand up straight again, I couldn't. I had to waddle over to a fence post and pull myself up straight. After that I lay on my stomach and propped myself up on my elbows, to take pics. I actually had two cameras, because the cedar pollen is a real nuisance here in late winter and early spring, and I didn't want to change lenses. Luckily, my Pentax Q system cameras weigh next to nothing. I only originally brought stills cameras to supplement my video doc work, but getting out and shooting the landscape is very addictive and intoxicating. And your vids are definitely having an impact. I do think I have a better eye for a shot now than I did even six months ago. This channel is a regular go-to, for me, for ideas and inspiration.

Now that was really a supprise. Never thought that someone will still, have a look at that " old" lens. But quite supprise with the images. Yes i think for someone on a serieous budget but stil want some weather proving and veratility,that lens is a real bargain. And to top off also some close focusing ability. With some art filters maybe some of that old buildings tectures will be quite a image. Nice video.

Hello Leon, thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave your thoughts. This lens certainly fits the bill for a light weight everyday carry, while still providing the high enough quality that I would always require of any lens. Not sure about art filters though, as I don't use that sort of thing myself. Although I could certainly see it working well with some imaginative postprocessing on raw files 😊👍

Very pleasent review. I might be late in to party, but i have to say, that this lens is far better then ive come expect after reading a few reviews. Its just fine, sure it not might have stellar contrast, and not tack sharp, but whom expected that? What i has, is versatility a plenty. IQ is more then ok.

Really great video David. I have been doing pretty much what you are now doing except I use the 14-150. It really does make a huge difference in both size and weight over the 12-100. I think that you will really enjoy the smaller lens. Actually my dream system would be an em-1 mkiii shrunk down to the size and weight of an em-5 with the smaller lens. That would definitely make my old bones and arthritic knees happy🤗

Hi Peter, I'm toying with the idea of an EM5 As an every day carry body, which I would then also use for video. Haven't made my mind up yet, but this sort of lightweight lens would definitely live on that body if I do get one. 😊👍

D Griff Gallery I think that you would like that combination. I actually bought an em-10 mkii a couple of years ago with that in mind. I bought it with the 14-42 pancake lens with the auto lens cap and it turned out to be much better than I I thought it would be. It's very small and compact and can easily fit into a jacket pocket with that lens attached.. It's a nice fit with the 14-150mm lens as well. I believe the em-5 is very similar in both weight and size. I actually considered selling all my pro gear and going to an em-5 as my primary camera along with the 14-150mm, 9-18mm and the 75-300mm all of which I already have. It would make for a very small and light weight system and to be honest when I look at the pictures I take on my computer I see little if any difference in the quality. If I start pixel peeping I can maybe see a little difference but I think that has more to do with the difference in sensor size between the two cameras. Decisions, decisions......I guess that's part of the fun🤗Anyway enjoy your new lens.

I use a Lumix G9 with the 12-60 kit lens mostly but have been looking at getting a 12-100 or 12-200 as my daily use lens for both landscape and street photography. I can't really justify the expense right now though because I also have the 14-42, 45-150 and 100-300 lenses so I have the range covered but only if I switch lenses LOL.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Steve, I would definitely recommend the 12-100 having used it as my primary lens almost exclusively for about 3 years until recently. But I would be cautious about the 12-200 as such a wide focal range definitely creates compromises in terms of image quality. I have seen some reviews which have been less than glowing. When you consider that it has a full frame equivalent of a 24 to 400 you get the idea of what they're trying to achieve in such a compact package that there are inevitable issues which the physics of optics simply cannot overcome. So my recommendation would be to trade in your 14-42, 45-150, and 12-60 to put towards a used 12-100 which would probably mean youd probably end up spending a couple of hundred quid on it. And I can vouch for the fact that it is far better quality than any of those three lenses. Then by keeping the 100-300 you also have longer focal lengths covered too. But on micro 4/3, specifically for landscapes, you will find that they 12-100 is probably permanently mounted on your camera and covers just about everything. As I said, when I had mine it barely left the camera once in a blue moon for about a three-year period. The only reason I traded it in was because I wanted to be able to use shallow a depth of field more effectively at wider apertures for a specific set of image requirements. Otherwise, I would still be using it on a daily basis. 😊👍

I used the 12-50 for a couple of years when I first moved to Olympus but recently I bought the 12-45 f4 Pro and sold the 12-50. The pro is only slightly heavier and a little shorter and lacks the eZoom (BTW Did you know it works over wifi from your phone?) The close focus is the same on both so I couldn't justify keeping both. But it worked really well on lighter weight cameras such as my little Lumix GX80, you really could notice the weight difference from the 12-45 there.

Hi Alan, yes I hear that the 12-45 is an extremely good lens and a wise choice. I think if I was rebuilding my Olympus kit I would probably have that on my radar, but in this instance I didn't want to replace my 12 to 100 as that does the job so wasn't really looking to splash out on pro glass for a general-purpose walking about lens. 😊👍

Hi Stephen, I'll be honest, I really never given any thought to using the digital tele-conv feature, As it is simply producing an in-camera jpeg at in effect half resolution to generate the image. Since I shoot raw I will often process an image with quite a tight crop so in fact I am emulating what the camera does, but I'm doing it manually. Thereby giving myself full control over the processing and not relying on an algorithm designed by a technician in a Japanese laboratory. That is why I never shoot JPEG anyway, whether under a digital tele-converter process or not. I have seen some images produced with this method and in all honesty they are perfectly acceptable, especially if you generally only shoot JPEG to start with, but I do think that with the type of processing that I like to do it really wouldn't suit my style of interpretation. 😊👍

When I bought the original E-M5 when it came out, it shipped with the 12-50mm as a kit lens. Unfortunately, that lens is not being manufactured anymore. If you can, buy one. Why? The optical quality is good. It's not great, it's good. It's small and light. It's weather sealed. It has a very useful and decent macro mode. It has electronic zoom as an option. Useful for video. The autofocus is silent and fast. Programmable function button, not even every pro lens has that feature. It covers 12mm. Very useful in a small standard zoom.

Hello David, sorry to mither, is the 12 to 50mm weather sealed? A recent trip to Scotland proved the need for a weather sealed lens, was rushing to grap shot,s between storm,s, some half decent seascape shot,s but could have been so much better.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 2 жыл бұрын
No problem at all Steve. Yes the 12-50 is weather sealed. The thing to bear in mind though with all whether sealed equipment is that it won't be a problem if it gets splashed with a few raindrops, but I wouldn't allow it to get completely drenched at any stage because even the best weathersealing can fail. That's why I carry a brolly every time I'm out. The benefits in rainy weather are obvious, and allows me to keep shooting and in many cases shooting in bad weather creates better images, but also it helps with bright sunny conditions to mask potential lens flare. On a recent workshop I was able to lend my brolly to a photographer who otherwise would've got very little from the day as it was hammering down the entire time. But by putting the camera on the tripod in the rain lining up the shot and setting up the exposure and composition, and then after wiping the lens using the brolly to stop it getting wet again immediately they were able to get some really good shots. So my recommendation for poor weather is always to carry a small brolly. That way, when paired up with the weathersealing of your equipment you can be confident. I use a 6 Moons Design lightweight hiking brolly. It's not very cheap, but it is almost weightless and yet very strong so it just leaves in my camera bag and has come in hugely useful many many times 😊👍

Can I ask you how do you have amaizing audio inside. I made a video today and I am just about edit it but there is a lots of background noise. I use the same set up what I usually use outside and from there I have no issue. Any idea or recomendations? What can I do to get Better audio inside! Thank you in advance.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Norbert, difficult to say exactly what the problem might be without hearing the unprocessed audio. Also, it does depend what type of microphone you use. An omnidirectional microphone is often more problematic in doors because it picks up ambient sound from all over the place, especially echo within a small room with out a lot of soft furnishings. So I always use a shot gun mic indoors. And it has to be positioned as close to you as possible, ideally without being in shot. Oh, you do see some vloggers who have their microphone in the shot as well when they are shooting indoors. One thing I can suggest, and it's something I did myself when I started doing this, is go onto KZfaq and search for how to record audio indoors or that sort of thing. Also, it's worth looking at how to process audio as there is quite a lot you can do when you are bringing your video together to improve the quality. Anyway, hope this helps at least in part. 😊👍
