Special guest Charli Meredith returns to join Jimmy on a whirlwind tour around London during #LumiereLDN, testing the newly released 17mm f1.2 pro lens from Olympus. Jimmy has loved the 25mm f1.2 and the 45mm f1.2 from Olympus so far; but when it comes to his favourite focal length, how will the Olympus 17mm f1.2 do?

Personally, I think Olympus makes the most sexy looking lenses in the industry. They perform as good as they look too. I only have two right now. the 45 1.8 and the 7-14 2.8 Pro. Fantastic Lenses.

Jimmy, Jimmy.... Do me a favor (yeah, just for me) and cut the volume of the music by 50% (twice as loud as talking, bugs me) and then on the static images, show the settings (ISO, Shutter, Aperture), because that is educational too. Nitpicks aside, another good review related to a lens and it has some beauty and comic relief in there too. Good job, great lens, a tick below in "love" for me over the 45mm one too.

Thanks for explaining the virtues of the 17mm for environmental portraits. I have a 17mm 1.8 but have not thought to use it in this manner. Hard not to take great portraits of Ms. Meredith with her remarkable beauty and lovely personality, but I see now how bringing the surroundings into the frame gives a sense of place. Very 😎.

Thank you very much for such great explanation of the lense and putting it into a low light environment. Excatly what I was searching. I'm looking for a replacement of my Sigma 16mm 1.4 that I used on a Sony a6400. While it is a bit narrower, I found myself cropping a lot of the old images. So I might give this one a try. It is really amazing seeing your consistent dedication to your work, as I just realised the video is from three years ago. Thank you very much!

@@Red35Photography indeed. I've decided on the 17 , it's more a favourite focal length (my favourite lens in the whole system is the 15/1.7). Plus, I have the Sigma 30/1.4 in that "normal" range, which is itself a pretty fast aperture and a very nice lens.

Random question... if this lens is stopped down to f4... is there a difference in character between this and the 12-40 pro at 17mm f4... perhaps a softer feel... I love the pro zooms but sometimes I find them a little too sharp maybe very slightly harsh... (this could of course be my imagination) any thoughts...

I could take a great picture of Charli even using old 1920s equipment because she is so stunningly beautiful. This lens looks good but how valuable is it if you already have the very impressive 12-40mm Olympus zoom?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris, surely Charli would appreciate your kind words :D Well, 12-40 is a very great general purpose lens and super sharp. I need that 1.2 for my work as I shoot low light a lot. 2.8 is great but for me it's too slow and I don't like to crank up ISO because I have clients to satisfy. But having said that, and don't get me wrong, they are two very different lenses and one is specialised and fixed focal length and other is more tailor for flexibility. Both have excellent optical quality so the decision is really up to you if you really need to use that speed. And I haven't mentioned bokeh :)

Thanks Keith!!! Much appreciated your support!! Yeah, I simply love the Olympus lenses and well, I do prefer the styling of Olympus cameras myself over Panasonic, though at the moment, they are better in the video spec. Hopefully, one day Olympus can match the video specs as Olympus and that will make my day! Mind you, we are perfectly happy with the EM-1 Mark II videos (we use it to film all our KZfaq videos !!!) but if it has better features like log files and higher frame rate etc, then it will enhance our work dramatically!

love 17mm angle and picture you took in the video! Should I buy 17pro or 1025 in 2020? I have pan body, and like to have 1025 to replace other prime lens, seem able to save the trouble of changing lens for me. But not sure how does it perform in real world, does 1.2 and 1.7 for m43 make a big difference for portrait? same 17mm. I know 1025 is bigger and heavier, it's also what I concern...

As good as the 10-25, I would recommend 17mm pro for portrait. It does make a difference id DoF and also low light ability. 10-25 is a phenomenal lens but for me, it's great for video ore than photos. And yes, that thing weights a ton :)

Aww, thanks mate. That means a lot to me personally but Tracey did a good job filming these awesome videos too. Charli is a great character and beautiful, it's a team effort for this presentation. Really appreciate that comment about characters because as you know, being a Leica shooter, we look for the feel of the lens and how things are render and we value the overall aesthetics as well as sharpness and other important elements. Olympus lenses deliver that in my opinion. Panasonic does have some cool lenses but they are very 'modern' and aiming for the more general/consumer feel than the 'trained' eyes. But that's my opinion and people may disagree :)

@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Tae Nam thanks Tse for watching our video! Well it’s not a tough sell really. First, it’s a native lens which means it’s fully supported by firmware update from both body and lens, second its weather sealed, 1.2 is also a selling point and I will Ly that for a 1.2 anydays as I need as much speed as possible. It’s almost like Canon’s own 1.4 & 1.2 lenses which the latter is more than double the price. Though I must say that the Sigma is nice and value for money. Great performer overall. The combination of 17mm 1.2 vs 16mm 1.4 means that it has a better subject separation at the same distant. J

Red35 Photography thanks for your comments and your reviews. I think it's a wonderful thing that mft system is getting many variety lenses. I have em5 mk2 now and I want to upgrade the body but I feel like Panasonic seems to be more relevant to the current market bringing many more camera bodies. I'm considering G9 but I want to know your input if that's a problem with Olympus lenses I have along the way like firmware AF etc.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Tae Nam I do think that m4/3 sector has matured quite nicely these days. You don’t have to worry about firmware as both Panasonic and Olympus have signed a join development agreement and they can upgrade firmwares on either side. Yet the native argument still exists because if there’s any improvement/fixes, it’s always quicker on native body/lenses. But I wouldn’t worry too much. G9 is a great camera and in many ways, it’s an updated version of EM1 II. G9 is over a year younger than EM1 so it better be :) Technologies move too quick these days but I’ve been shooting with EM1 II since it came out and all our KZfaq videos are shot on the same cameras (we have three!!). We love it. Newer cameras are coming out later in the year too, EM5 III should be sometime this year so stay tuned for that! PEN F II may be early next year then it will be eventually the EM1 III :) I am sticking with Olympus because it just works for me and it’s IBIS is still the best in business.

No weather sealing on the 17mm f/1.8, though. Otherwise I would say that it is the "better" option (smaller, lighter, much more affordable), but after seeing your video I do understand why Olympus made the 17mm f/1.2 …
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Christian! Absolutely, camera lens companies always make lenses with 'various' quality to shoot different target clients. They are all capable lenses and with different strength. I can't argue the size and value of the 1.8 and a wise option if you do a lot of travelling. But for those who needs the 1.2? It's only a one way road :)

So compared to the 17mm 1.8 if you were not worried about shooting in low light. Would it be worth spending the extra money for the 1.2 . I don't think so because shallow depth of field isn't such a desired thing for a wide lens in almost all shooting situations. And the 1.2 is not that much more shallow than the 1.8 lens. Now the Bokeh quality seems to be smoother so there is that. However it is so much larger and heavier. Just my humble opinion. Now Olympus build a 75mm 1.2 and I will be the first buyer. Love my 75mm 1.8 so much.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Terry, funny enough, there’s a visible difference in depth of field between the 1.8 and 1.2 and I think it’s all to do with the rendering with the pro lens. Yes, I do prefer the more compact size of the 1.8 for travel and leave the 1.2 for my pro shoots. Oh... 75mm 1.2 will be great!

Regards from Stockholm! Olympus 17mm f1.2 or Voightländer 17mm f0.95? My priority is low light. How much of a difference will there be between the two? Who has some advice?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, to be frank, the difference between 0.95 and 1.2 isn't as huge as some people may think. Yes, theoretically you can gain almost a stop but in reality, it depends on the lens design and more importantly the elements they used in the lens. Olympus, being a premium optics, it's wide open performance is hard to fault. Voigtlander while good, you need to stop down to get anythiing decent. You will get shallower depth of field, but you aren't gaining too much lights nor image quality. it's soft and has lots of coma and halo at 0.95. It's ok for black and white but you need to work on your colour images a lot. I've done other 0.95 lenses and apart from Leica, which costs over 10k USD or Nikkor for around the same money, you aren't going to get super sharp and super bright images. For that, I would go with 17mm 1.2

Hey Gabrielle, thanks for watching! In short, yes. Well, I did say you get what you paid for in the end for lenses. Olympus has a 17mm 1.8, which is about the same size as the Panasonic 15mm 1.7 but Panasonic is better, optically but also costs more than Olympus. Now Olympus has the 1.2 and again, much better optically, despite larger and heavier, it’s also build to last and weather-sealed. A must for professionals these days and I will pay for that speed and protection any day :)

Thank you so much for this beautiful review! What iso settings would you use for the kind of portraits you did in the low light? I'm doing a wedding this summer and I'm considering getting this lens for shots inside the church/walking up the aisle and also for group shots outdoors. Do you think it will work good for that purpose? Thanks so much again :)
@Red35Photography

audentish Thanks :) Yes, of course, the 17mm 1.2 Pro is one of the fastest M4/3 wide and also if you use EM1 II, it focuses super quick too. I use it for wedding and travel. All the photos in this review were shot wide open at 1.2 and ISO range from 400-1600

Great content. Do you think this lens would be good for landscape shooting. Or would you say the 25 or 45?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography Жыл бұрын
Yes any of these 1.2 Pro lenses are great. As for landscape photography, that depends on how you shoot your photos. Do you like to see more in your fame or into details? If you use 45mm, you may need to stop down a lot more or photostack to get the depth of field you need, unless you want subject separations.

@@Red35Photography Thank you for your speedy reply. I’ve got the 40/150 pro so I’m wondering if the 17mm pro would be good for my needs. I like shooting with foreground and some blared backgrounds. I guess I do like quite a lot in the frame for landscape. I’ve used the 20 mm Panasonic fix lens for years, up until now - since upgrading to the om1, I just want two lens that I can do most with at the start.

Hi Jimmy! Great video overall but to make it short, what sort of Iso ranges you used on the night section, like the lumiere and overall night scenes??? Again, slowly growing on me, the whole olympus pro series! not mentining the fun and beauty of your videos and Charlie! keep it on

Cheers Bruno mate. Well, I used mostly at ISO 200-800 depends on lights. I didn't use anything higher because of 1.2. I shoot weddings and in very dim situation, I would push it to 1600 and may sometimes 2000 but rarely I shoot beyond 3200 and 6400 is really an emergency. This is why I love the pro series and they are build for that!

They are both nice and Sigma has now developed a reputation for premium lenses. But I still prefer 17mm 1.2 just for its rendering and also that ever so slightly faster aperture for low light stuff. Every little helps for my type of work :)

Hi Jimmy, always enjoy the reviews. Is there still a place for the 25mm Pro along side the 17mm Pro? - meaning does it work to own both? I'm selling my Nocticron to fund the 17 (I have the 25). I would like all three but I have the 60mm macro and 40-150pro so I guess I have the 45mm covered? I would have to sell the 40-150 to get the 45 but I think the 40-150 offers more versatility though I don't use it much at the moment.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Cheers Chris, I guess they are all different and each has its own place depending on what you are shooting. I own both 17 and 25 1.2 pro lenses and they are in my bag most of the time. 25 is my workhorse and it's guaranteed in every shoot. I rotate 17mm with 12mm and 7-14mm 2.8 Pro depends on mood, weather condition, lights and subjects. I also own 60mm and 40-150 too and they are great for portraits. 45mm is a great lens if you need to use the 1.2 whether for DoF or low light shooting.

Hi Jimmy, i've been enjoying your videos, and was waiting to get home from work to watch this one when i got the notification it was posted today ! I've been considering jumping ship from canon. I bought an a6000. Fine little camera, but to be honest i believe sony has some high priced cameras and super high priced lenses which just don't have a high quality feel. I've decided not to invest further into the sony platform, and that has led me to Olympus........and your you tube channel ! I live in rural Canada, and much of my shooting has been wildlife, and of course hockey ! Jimmy, if you ever get a chance to shoot a hockey game try it. It will challenge you. The speed, lighting, focus speed, and white balance issues with the ice surface make hockey its own unique photography niche. With the release of the M1 Mark II i think Olympus may be able to work for me. For my own pleasure i enjoy getting out shooting landscapes, and astrophotography (northern lights here are awesome). Some of the fast wide angle lenses recently released from Olympus would compliment that nicely as well. I'm being long-winded but i wanted to thank you for the time and effort you put into your reviews. Its much appreciated. Also i should add that its fantastic to see Charli here again !! I see you guys are having so much fun. Keep up the great work

Thanks towee70!! Wow, glad you enjoy our videos! Believe me or not, I was a Canon guy myself and I was really blown away by the EM-1 Mark II when I first tried it and decided that it's time the Micro 4/3 platform can be used in a very demanding environment. I've been using it on a daily basis throughout 2017 and shot over 60k frames! It's just awesome and a great little camera for video too as you can see that all our videos are shot with the same camera. Olympus also produces some of the best lenses around and the latest 1.2 pro lenses are really an instant classic in my opinion. I know Canada is a great place indeed. I used to live in Vancouver for 2 years when I was a teenager and loved it there. It certainly is a great place for wildlife and landscape! Northern lights!!! Man, take me there! I've never shot a hockey game before, only watched it on TV a few times. I do like watching baseball and basketball though :) Where about in Canada you live? If I ever come your end, will definitely ask you for places to 'shoot' some cool wildlife and landscape! Oh, thanks about Charli and she's great isn't she?

Yes, Charli is a delight, you both give off positive vibes and work so well together. I like that both of you interact with your audience so naturally and unscripted. I am in Manitoba, right in the middle of Canada. I have travelled coast to coast. My own province has some awesome destinations. One especially worth mentioning is Churchill Manitoba. A small northern community. I'm sure google would return the photo results of many pros and amateurs alike. In a matter of hours you could photograph polar bears, beluga whales and the aurora. In the southern part of the province where i live it is a blend of prairies and boreal forest. Seeing that you previously lived in Vancouver you are well aware of the Rockies, a person could photograph there for a lifetime and capture award winning vistas daily. Definitely look me up if you are planning a trip to Canada !

Oh, and as far as the Olympus system, i believe i would select the E-M1 Mark II and the Pen-F. Haha, and so far i have it narrowed down to just 14 Olympus lenses that i would like. The Pen F made my lens list grow because i believe i'd like some of the smaller premium glass to go with it. That would mean some overlap with Pro primes, but in my opinion the Pen-F was designed for thos more compact lenses. Would love to hear your opinions on the pro lenses paired with the Pen-F ??
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Manitoba! Wow, I would love to go there for a visit. 14 lenses! Pen F is definitely made to match all those nice small premium primes, reminds of all those lovely rangefinder street cameras! But look aside, the pro lenses work perfectly on the PEN F too but if you shoot sports a lot, Pen F won't do as well as EM1 because it's still contrast base AF and EM1 has both contrast and phase detect hybrid system which is one of the best in terms of tracking in mirrorless system today.
