Compassion or loving-kindness, which translates from the Sanskrit term bodhicitta, is a characteristic that is innate and latent in each and every human being. We are all capable of feeling compassion which arises when for instance, we see a fellow being in distress and feel a motivation to help them, or when we feel moved by someone who despite grave danger and risk, acts to rescue someone else in that position. Sometimes, when such feelings arise, it may even bring tears to our eyes. Arya Avalokiteshvara (Ch. Guanyin, Tib. Chenrezig) is a Bodhisattva who is the ultimate embodiment of compassion. He vowed to postpone his own Buddhahood until he has helped every sentient being on earth achieve liberation from suffering and the process of death and rebirth. Depicted in either the male and the female form, Guanyin is invoked by through chanting of six-syllable mantra-Om mani padme huṃ (Homage to the [holder of] jewel-lotus!). It is believed that because of his vows, Guanyin will answer to anyone who calls upon him and render the protection.
Our resident teacher Geshe Lama Konchok presents here, a rendition of Guanyin’s mantra and may anyone and everyone who beholds or hears this tune and/or mantra be inspired to call upon and invoke Guanyin, and may peace and the seeds of enlightenment be planted in and always abide with them.
