A song possibly dating from the extermination and genocide of the Ingrian nation under the Soviet Union, about wanting to return to the homeland after being forcibly deported to faraway lands.

Yup. I once spoke with an older gentleman in Helsinki who came from an Ingrian background. Before his family fled to Finland, his grandfather was sent to a work camp, no trial. He never came back. When the U.S.S.R. fell, the guy looked at some released records and found out that his grandpa was sentenced to death after taking part in a huge riot against the camp guards. What a hero.

It’s one of many dying languages in the world, they are called endangered languages(or moribund languages), similar to endangered species, the languages are at risk of dying out completely. Dead languages and extinct languages are the same in their own rights, but extinct languages mean that to basically to reconstruct the language, there’s very little written records. Dead languages, even though no one natively speaks it, can be reconstructed more easily than extinct languages, and sometimes actually can be spoken nowadays. For example, since the fall of the Roman Empire, Latin is considered to be a dead language, as no one natively speaks it. However, it’s not extinct due to the thousands of texts and whatever not during Rome’s time, and thus the language is reconstructable and has undergone a massive language revival. (The Bible is one, there’s even a Latin language Wiki for whoever wants to check that out)

The language in question is Izhorian. Ingria is a historical region at the back end of the Gulf of Finland, surrounding the modern day city of St. Petersburg. The indigenous population (almost gone at this point) is Finno-Ugric. It came under Russian rule in the middle ages, but the Russian population was quite low for most of history. Before St. Petersburg was founded. The Ingrians are descendants of Finns who migrated to Ingria in the 1600s after Sweden won it from Russia in a war. Not to be confused with Izhorians. Izhorians are the indigenous (and almost extinct) population of the area. They live in Ingria but are Izhorian, not Ingrian. They are orthodox, unlike the Lutheran Ingrian Finns. Russia took Ingria back during the Great Northern War and built the huge city of St. Petersburg (Russia's new capital) right in the middle of it, making the local population explode (lots of Russians) which would later spell doom upon any Finnish expansionist aspirations. Nonetheless, Ingria remained very multiethnic, and the countryside remained very Finnish/Ingrian. They developed a Finnish and Ingrian identity, and revolted against red Russia during the civil war, wanting autonomy or the right to join Finland. They failed. Still, they formed a majority in many places all around rural St. Petersburg even during the early soviet years. That all changed with the U.S.S.R. During Stalin's purges and WWII, most of them were killed, sent to Siberia or fled to Finland. There's no way to distinguish the ones in Finland from other Finns, and all who survive in Russia speak Russian and have nothing left of who they once were. I spoke with an older gentleman in Helsinki once. He was from an Ingrian background. In one of his apartment's room's there was an Ingrian flag and a map of the region. He told me his parents fled persecution to Finland, but his grandfather was sent to a work camp, without a trial. He never came back. Years later they found out that he fought against his oppressors in a riot at the camp and was sentenced to death. I've heard a Finnish version of this song before. It's somewhat confusing; Ingria was conceived by Ingrians, but this song is sung in Izhorian. Makes sense, because it's their homeland, too. It's the equivalent of a Scottish or Welsh person calling themselves British, despite the majority of British people being Anglo-Saxons.

It is a phenomenon, that autonomist\separatist pushes and regionalist ideology in Ingria are mosly mosly common among ethnicaly russian people, not the ethnicaly izhorian, but this fact is mosly unknown abroad

True. There are two Ingrian movements, one for the sons of Finns (real Ingrians) and one for those "independent saint petersburg" knobs. Russians should stop using our beautiful flag.

@@onlinecommentator2616 I wonder what makes you “real” Ingrian? Are you a pegan or maybe your scull is somehow better then their sculls? I think those “knobs” stick to this flag and the ethnic group because it gives attractive Scandinavian attributes which is helpful because many people from this region see how their northern neighbours live. In Russian history there were times when Slavs invited vikings to rule them as Slavs had similar traditions and beliefs. Do you really believe that 200 people can grab the region with the population of 8 million and do you really think you will be in the right position to tell them that they are not “real” Ingrians? Go to Norway for a weekend and see how many “unreal” Norwegians live there and try to tell them that they are not “real” Norwegians and persuade them to stop wearing t-shirts with Norwegian flag.

@@Nikita-cm2bm A real Ingrian is somebody who is of Finnish blood. I am not an Ingrian, and I didn't mean to insinuate that. I said "our flag" because Ingrians are like me, Finns. Consequently real Norwegians are real Norwegians. I cannot claim to be a Norwegian because I am not ethnically Scandinavian.

Can you do kalinfita? "Καληνύφτα" a song in griko, which is a language related to greek spoken in Puglia a region of southern Italy, it's a really old language it's origins are accredited to the period from when the south of Italy was full of greek colonies, it has only 20.000 speakers and it's endangered, it was actually relatively stable up until the 50s tho, it's use started to decline as Italy opened up internationally after fascism and as industrialisation started.
