As a Fujifilm user and fanboy I think as consumers we need to push Fujifilm to improve their autofocus. It’s always been an issue even if you nail down the settings.

Didn't Fuji fanbase already for years pushed for better AF? They kinda did address it. Just like how so many cried for articulating LCD. Interestingly they said it was not possible, but added it to X-T4. Then many complained to bring back the tilt lcd. Hence we now have both options. Someday AF will be perfect. Maybe.

Yup. The crazy thing is that some influencers are finally stating that it is an Achilles heel. While Sony and others are just killing it. The justification before when fuji's cameras didn't focus was - "... well the competition is about the same!". Not anymore, the mirrorless wars are over and focus is not an issue anymore for those that are pulling away. On the other hand, Fuji still has wonderful color science and creates the best jpegs - perhaps that is why we still love Fuji, but for how long? And don't get me started with video. :/

They didn't know how many pictures I took, what lens I used or settings. In the end they reviewed there fotos on an cellphone ... and there where happy, that someone took pictures you don't get with your phone. Hey Omar, I saw Jerred Z’s video about the XT5’s false positive focus. It’s when you are looking thru the EVF or LCD and that little box tracking the eye or face of the subject turns green and so you shoot a number of photos only to find out that a good number of those shots are out of focus or soft. Three says ago, I had a business portrait session and I used my new XT5 paired with the 16-80 f4 lens. For reference, I am an experienced Fujifilm user coming from the XT3 and I am well versed in portraits with strobes or speedlights. So I did have my focus priority on and AF+MF off and my settings were right enough to minimize any blur. I was hand-holding the cam at 1/500 f5.6 ISO 200 AF-C Face/Eye AF with IS in Continuous mode. I would acquire eye/face focus as indicated by the green box, but a surprising amount of my shots were out of focus or soft. The danger here is the false positive focus. I can understand if the box wouldn’t turn green at all meaning it just can’t get focus, but to turn green even if it hasn’t acquired focus is alarming especially if you are on the job for really important events, then coming back with a bunch of unusable photos. I hope Fujifilm can fix this soon. Btw, I had my Sony a7r3A as backup for the session and as soon I noticed the problem with the XT5, I switched to my Sony and it almost never missed the focus with 95% or higher hit rate with the same settings as my XT5.

@@ogonzilla Yeah, definitely. Will be testing it with my XF 33mm f1.4 this weekend, see if I can get better results. Also, another XT5 user messaged me that he keeps getting eyelashes in focus instead of the iris which also happened to me and that muddy look also keeps popping out. At first glance in reviewing my photos using the lcd, it looks sharp, but once you punch in, it feels like you have watery eyes and you can’t understand if the photo is soft or you just need to blink several times to clear your vision.

I've done similar test with my XT4 (shortly after owning it), I used the Viltrox 56 @ 1.4 and was getting pretty similar results to what you have here. I think the biggest improvement for the XT5 is the 'on screen feedback', that you are getting better notified that it sees a person/face/eye. I noted with the XT4 for example that it would actually at times have a shot in focus on the eye but at the time I was too quick and didn't give it quite enough time to display/show the box around the face/eye. You think to yourself that you prolly were too trigger happy for it, but actually on playback it says face was detected.

3:13 I was baffled when I heard this, as I use AF+MF & Focus Priority on all of my Fooj bodies. I had to recheck the manuals, and neither the X-T4, nor the X-Pro3 seem to have this restriction. This looks like a setting you need to pay attention to on an X-T5, so better always check the manual for the specific model you use. Big shoutout to Omer, I respect your work, especially this kind of details you won’t find easily elsewhere.

My guess is that the mushy photos are slight focus misses, not IQ problems from 800 iso. I tested my XT3 in broad daylight on a static subject and decided that, if I have enough light, iso 6400 is tolerable and anything 3200 or less is basically great. The other reviews on XT5 suggest to me that it is noisier, but not crappy in terms of ISO performance. Available light and lens used has had a big impact on the overall sharpness and quality of my photos with XT3. I get plenty of “usable” photos in various conditions on any lens but to be blown away I need perfect focus plus good light, and with Fuji the focus hit rate basically sucks in my experience. I hardly ever burst and still expect near misses and misses to occur pretty damn frequently. It could be my own movement/subject movement, shutter speed, whatever, but Sony figured it out. I’m not defending Fuji, I love my Fuji. Also, Fuji sucks.

@matt88169

@@anonymousl5150 I know exactly which videos you might be referring too. If your point is that these new cameras seem like a disappointment, and you wanted one, I guess all I can say is "try before you buy". I enjoy many KZfaqrs and their opinions, but at the end of the day its about YOU and what YOU are trying to accomplish with a camera. If you shoot in crappy light, AF suffers, image quality suffers, and so on. Garbage in, garbage out. You can spend plenty on a full frame and still be miserable. Anyway I hope Omar and others do a lot more testing and help us figure this crap out.
@alexmilesg3
@alexmilesg3 Жыл бұрын
I tend to agree - the mushy effect is because things are not properly in focus. At 800 ISO noise is not an issue on these cameras, in fact you can push them way up and the results still are acceptable as long as everything is properly in focus. I (tried to) shoot a lot of indoor sport with my X-T4 and it has always been a disaster. In low light the AF just can't keep up, and the result are misfocused shots that look like crap. With my A7 III, it is a walk in the park. And that was my drive to just stop investing in Fuji until they figure things out. I mean, these days with 3rd party lenses on Sony you can get a wonderful kit at about the same price as Fuji.

A great in depth review, and some awesome setting tips. One cool thing I have found with the X-T5 is that in the custom settings you can modify more than just spec settings. I now have my custom mode 6 set to have AF+MF off for when I want to use AFC and face/eye detect. I have my right d-pad set to select custom mode. So if I am dealing with action or moving subjects, select C6, and put focus switch to C. So nice we can control settings like this. C7 is bird mode, etc. ;)

Saw people commenting how Fuji is now on par to Sony A1 or Canon R5 with eye AF. As a Fuji owner since X-T1 I was super super excited! Went out to test the X-H2s at the camera store but left with mix feelings. Eye AF tracking was better than anything Fuji had prior, very usable now, but wanted more. Definitely not A1/R5 level. The viewfinder eye AF box felt choppy and tends to lag/trail the subject it tracks. Works well for static subjects but subpar if they are moving or you pan. Sony/Canon, their AF box in the EVF was way more sticky and smooth. Don't know if Fuji is just showing less AF frames to save battery or what, but the user experience was underwhelming. Felt like early gen eye AF or beta. Fuji gave us enough to make things work with enough tinkering with right setting/environment, but it isn't hands off brain dead reliable easy like canon/sony. Not many people compare AF tests like you do yet. Think "The Slanted Lens" did something similar with X-H2/A74/R6 of a model walking towards camera. Fuji would miss several shots, but Sony nails all of them. Be cool if you setup all the camera side-by-side on tripods and show how fluid the AF tracks in the viewfinder too. Gets exact comparison for the same subject motion. End of the day Fuji AF while not the best is good enough for most casual people to get by. Don't think they ever get market leading bragging rights on anything tech wise. Everything they do sorta orient/push toward value in a niche market they dominate. Just don't have the budget to take on bigger players.

Interesting analysis and autofocus test. I've been reading other reports of muddy images from the new 40MP sensor which I find more that a little concerning. Could it be the 40MP sensor and lens combos are mismatched? In addition, it seems to me that Canon and Sony are clearly the industry leaders in autofocus performance and overall responsiveness but you simply can't beat the Nikon Z6 II files for image quality. It's becoming more important than ever to choose the right camera and lens for the job. Thanks for the great content and information Omar.

I was surprised by the XT5 camera feel, analogue setup isn’t something I thought about until I had one in my hand. I love it and now just want Fuji to get it right. The price is not the driving appeal. The range of Fuji glass is great in most aspects, so the system specifications ticks all boxes except Auto face and eye / autofocus. I experienced false focus lock and that doesn’t inspire trust in human or the other object modes either. Fuji this should be priority No 1

More and more videos are showing up on KZfaq demonstrating that the accuracy of the X-T5s autofocus is not that good. The problem is that it for example shows that the eye of a person is in focus on screen, but when reviewing the actual pictures there's another area in focus (i.e. the hair). I tested my X-T5 with the aforementioned 35mm f/2 and I was pleasantly surprised with the autofocus. I just took it around for a walk and photographed ducks and seagulls in a pond. The birds were quite far away, but the autofocus picked them up right away. I didn't review the pictures on accuracy as the birds were really far away. The X-T5 had however difficulties with the autofocus of the 80mm macrolens, but autofocus on a macrolens is an exceptional case so I don't think it's representative of the capabilities of the X-T5s autofocus. Nonetheless I'm quite curious about the findings of other people and if this is due to the new 40 megapixel sensor used in the X-T5. If that's the case I would assume it would be picked up earlier as the X-H2 is already out for quite a while.

Appreciate you Omar! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I have noticed that my photos from my x-pro3 can get that super soft or muddy look when the iso begins to creep up, even at like 2000 to 2500, which is a bummer because I love shooting that camera. My Nikons seem to have a totally different quality level of image in most situations when comparing. I know we shouldn't necessarily do that because that is also subjective, but, to me, it is something I have noticed that I found pretty surprising. Also, I know you are busy, but I am definitely jonesing for that next Moe and O show!

05:11 I'm really glad you mentioned it there. I so sad I'm saying this because I just love Fujifilm cameras. Even though I love Fujifilm, I mean so much so that I had sold all the other systems(yes even Sony A7m3) and am currently only using T3&100V, Fuji always feels lacking this 2 percent to get "THERE" if you know what I mean. Everytime they release a new model the "It's getting better" tag comes along but it seems that they have always been "getting better to the 90 something percent of other brands and I'm afraid they will be like this for... some time. I really hope that the day come not far in the future when Fujifilm IS there not GETTING there again.

MUDDY! Lol! Fuji product engineers going *!BONKERS!* when they hear this, no doubt. Anyway, there's been some 40MP APS-C dialog about High ISO NR versus RAW embedded noise versus Low ISO affects; plus the implications of IBIS on noise, especially on tripod. Wheeeww! Yes - getting to know your system is best! Anyway, 'IamTongue' reviewed and advocates setting Hi ISO NR to -4, but frankly I'm not so sure. Yes, it gets rid of noisy artifacts, but a bit of NR seems to smooth coloration out, even at low ISOs. Know when I heard your low light statement, I reflected on some weekend XT-5 pics I had taken, and noticed they were indeed 'different' than my former XT-3 pics. Thx!

Not to mention the huge following the film simulations have. Sure, I would love to have better auto focus, but overall I would still take the Fuji any day of the week.I sold my z6 for an x-t4 (now have the x-t5) and I will never go back to those 'lifeless' cameras.

@@djstuc Wild life isn’t street photography! I realize I am in kind of a unique area of photography. I’ve been doing this for the last six years and it’s been quite frustrating working with Fuji cameras. People are incredibly unpredictable, as well as the scenes that pop up with people in them. With wildlife I think you have a pretty good idea of what you’re photographing. I’ve learned to use the limit focus on lenses with my XT4, which helps, but doesn’t guarantee the shot. You don’t know how many shots I’ve lost because I couldn’t get the focus. I’m talking about I’m shooting three or four shots and still can’t get any of them in focus? It is help buying the faster, focusing lenses with the linear motors in them, but I still had to use the limit focus on some of them, if not all. I’ve tried every scenario you can think of, and I just sent my custom setting on one, because all the rest fail to often and even the number one position fails, even with pre-focus in having the camera turned on. If I was just taking pictures of nature or buildings, it wouldn’t be a problem. But even DP review said there’s a lot of room for improvement with the XT5. 🖖

I am new to Fujifilm cameras, traded my Canon R6 for X-H2s recently because I actually liked the X-H2s autofocus more! I use AF-C and Wide Tracking most of the time, sometimes switching ON the Face / Eye AF when situation is right. Comparing to Canon R6 the logic of AF is different with Fuji so I have to re-learn the new system but in general as a whole package the X-H2s enables me to have more in-focus images than Canon and I enjoy the result more (Fuji colors as I like to shoot jpeg only - I mainly photograph events and people and I need to deliver the images quickly). As of the image quality on higher ISO, I have noticed the "muddiness" too but found full remedy in turning the Noise Reduction all the way to -4 (and using fast prime lenses). Now even images above ISO 3200 are crisp as I was used with Canon R6 (yes, there is visible noise but no muddy blotches instead of detail).

When you compared the XT-5 ISO 800 images to the Nikon Z6ii ISO 800 images, it looked to me like there was more noise in the Fuji images than there was in the Nikon images. However, the Fuji shots looked like they were in focus. Of course, due to the larger sensor, and less megapixels of the Nikon, we would expect that to be the case. If you compared the XH2S at 800 ISO to the Nikon Z6ii at 800 ISO, I would think that the Fuji files would be a bit cleaner than the XT5. Great video, BTW! Thanks!

Thats because Fujifilm AF is faulty… and funnily only very few people notice. In the simplest AFS single point mode, when repeatedly focusing on one and the same spot, the camera will measure a different distance… Since implementing Phase Detect, Fuji cameras cant focus reliably.

@@thisisbenji90 never, they dont work reliably since implementing phase detect. Only their old contrast detect AF systems in e.g. XT1 and their GFX series work. Its simple to prove when repeatedly focusing on one and the same still spot/object and displaying the focus distance in the EVF. You will see how the camera measures different distances all the time, which of course ends up in a series of differently focused images.
