livjunkie I actually have been wanting to do that on my channel because the front squat doesn't get much love. I'm not built for the FS AT ALL but I like to think I've got it down well because I've learned to accommodate it to my strengths. Most tend to mimic an Olympic lifting style front squat but I do it slightly different. I'll try to film the ins and outs of how it'll be unique to everyone within a couple weeks :)

I wish Brendan had been my strength coach in high school. I always felt more comfortable squating with my toes and knees out, but my coach always insisted my technique was wrong. He kept trying to force my toes and knees to go straight forward, and I could never do it right. Made me feel like a failure at a young age.

Michael Leibowitz yeah it's unfortunate how often that happens. Speaking from a perfectly designed human that stands naturally in absolute anatomical neutral and has no unique or out of the norm morphology we should all squat pretty close to that. However in the real world you almost never see that haha so in reality is there even such thing as average or "normal" morphology? Not really.

Don’t feel bad. I’m 37 and only figured out recently that a narrow stance with toes out about 30 degrees works best for me. No wonder I’ve hated the squat for so long and could never do it right but now it’s my favorite exercise and I’m doing some decent weight

That little exercise at the beginning for determining stance width was great! It's a lot easier to get a feel for what's going on than trying to make the same determination under load. Looking forward to trying out a slightly narrower squat next time. Thanks for the video Omar and Brendan!

Honestly one of the best squat videos I've seen online addressing the different approaches to a squat with different body shapes. I struggled for years to find the right squat position for myself, wish I'd seen this when I was starting out.

Being tall and having long legs, I had heard it would be better to have a wide stance. That's until I discovered it was much more easier for me to squat with a narrow stance, toes just a bit flared out.

Luis Paez it really depends on your hip anatomy as well as he says in the video. if youre taller with longer femurs it is more beneficial to push your knees out and open up the hips more BUT if you go super wide and dont have the hip mobility or insertion to handle this, your spine is just going to curve at the bottom and thats one of the worst things for the squat. ive found that REALLY concentrating on screwing my feet into the floor and concentrating on that throughout the lift, that my best stance is about shoulder width with toes slightly pointed out. ive got pretty long femurs. this position gets me about half or quarter inch below paralell with low bar and no buttwink. the best thing for me was finguring this out and not trying to sink them and sit btw my hips too much with chest high because that caused so much buttwink. for me, as long as i agressively screw in my feet and stay grounded, my kneed go where they need to go and where theyre strongest.

Yeah that too, I have long femurs also, that's why I tried the wide stance.. But personally it just doesnt seem to do it for me for some reason. It's similar to how my wrists hurt a bit more doing bi curls with an EZ bar than with a straight one, have no idea why when it's supposed to be the contrary.

Yep, I tend to have far more power and stability when I have a narrow stance (just outside of my shoulders). Wider stance tends to put more stress on hip flexors, although it definitely seems more gentle on the knees (as long as they are pointed outwards properly). The potential stress on the groin area (squatting raw) isn't worth the lowered stress on the knees, in my case.

Amen. 6'3 all legs wasted a lot of time trying to use various wider stances. Threw on some squat shoes with a super high heel went ultra narrow on my stance toes almost pointed straight forward and squat is smooth as butter and feel all the muscles firing evenly vs feeling like I'm hammering joints. I even use a blasphemous ultra wide grip on the bar. I like look Jesus on the cross when squatting

I switched from narrow to wide and I have experienced soreness where I never felt before doing squats: the glutes. I looked it up and a wider squat allows for activation of more muscles, the glutes being one of them.

This is so great. I squat similarly to Taras , and I always thought I was doing it wrong because i started too much tension in my inner thigh rather than my quads. I recently switched to a more narrow stance, similar to Gina, and I find it so uncomfortable. I will probably switch back to my natural stance. I only switched because I felt like I was doing it wrong forever. Thanks Coach!

Me as well. Waaaahhh! My son told me "Dad you have a nice upper body but your legs are tiny." I promise I train calves! Even though my quads and glutes have gotten bigger and stronger small calves really make your legs look smaller. I'm team high/no calves. I'm also a black guy who LOVES sprinting so that might have something to do with it.

10:15 Chance Mitchell is as wobbly as hell in the legs. No stability at all throughout the movement. He also does the opposite of what this dude is saying about timing hips and knees better while the dude is speaking here in his red trainers. 13:11 The speed he snaps down at 10:15 is crazy and is probably because he is weak.

Jack Carter He is obviously strong af but I've never seen someone squat low bar with a stance that narrow. He dive bombs the fuck out of his squat too. It's a great squat but to me I've never seen something so unorthodox. I have to squat narrow because I have strong quads but could never imagine squatting low bar with that stance; to me it looks like a back injury waiting to happen. It obviously works for him but it's strange.

Tim Babadook I meet those three criteria, used to squat really narrow because I felt a false sense of tightness in the hole (was really my stomach just running out of room onto my quads haha) I didn't realize how bad it looked until watching training footage.. I recently moved my stance out a couple inches and so far so good. gives my hips more room to move and I feel more upright. no video yet to check my hypothesis

Yeah it's mostly because they have wide hips, they tend to have stronger leg bones and muscles. Maybe that's why their lower body tend to be big, almost as big as males, while their upper body remains very weak compared to males.

This is so helpful, I have watched so many squat videos and many just brush of individual needs by saying stuff like "This is the best way to do it, but everyone's squat/bench/deadlift will look different." This is the first video in which it's thoroughly explained and the use of other lifters is excellent.

In some ways yes, in some no. I mean, not everybody has 206 bones. So sure, if you work on your mobility, your mobility will be better, but like... ok so I can glance at a pelvis and tell you if it's male or female from six criteria. There's more, but they take more than a glance. So there's some truth to the idea that everyone could work on their mobility. Everyone (with reasonable exception for age and injury) can eventually squat to parallel or below with work, not everyone is going to be able to do it with the same foot and knee angle, spacing, etc. Kind of like how any healthy individual can train a split, but do you care to?

I think a lot of us know about form for the squat, the dealift even the bench. My questions is how do you train your CNS to increase strength and better allow to move heavy heavy weight, or new heavy weight for that particular person.

jyhluk Give up! But seriously i would just experiment with your foot angle and the width of your stance. Lou Feriggno was 6'5", he probably just had to figure it out with tons of trail and error.

jyhluk there's more to it than just morphology however try either a wide stance similar to Taras or if that's uncomfortable give my stance a try with the very externally rotated hip position. Because of your femur length and height in general you'll most likely want to adopt a more "hip dominant" squat in some way.

im 36% femurs and i figured my squat stance right after 2 years (not consitstent training). i always did conv deadlifts or clean pulls (♥clean pulls). id advice u to test out stances like the others said. i kinda like a more narrow toes forward stance because of the explosiveness and flowing motion you get. narrow paused squats 3x6 and 3x6 conv deadlifts after 3 times a week and ull go to a fucking viking 6'3 fml
