/ @ajrestoration Disclaimer: It's for a gocart I'm building. So the color does not matter, it will never see the waters again. The Hammerite green was my personal choice, neither does it matter if the fuel lines were powder coated, I am only using the main fuel out, not the return so it's okay. The inside of the tank was vacuum cleaned, it's clean inside, no dust (I checked). I got a bunch of comments from fellow restorers that are concerned and I understand. Thank you all for your time and input I really appreciate it. But here is a tip from AJ, Hammerite is enamel based, enamel paint and gasoline are not friends. If my oven was large enough I would rather powder coat it, I am in the process of upgrading my oven to a larger one, and I will probably make a 5min video of me removing the green and powder-coating the tank so the gasoline does not damage the finish. Gasoline removes the Hammerite paint :-X. Thanx guys.
Good day Ladies and Gents! I found this beautiful 6-gallon outboard gas tank while shopping at a garage sale, and as you can see it came home with me!
I hope you enjoy the video.
If you have any suggestions for improvement, or compliments share them below!
A little history.
Ole Evinrude was born in Gjøvik, Norway on April 19, 1877; five years later, his family emigrated to the United States, settling near Cambridge, Wisconsin. Interested in mechanics from an early age, Evinrude became an apprentice machinist at age 16 and eventually a master pattern maker, as well.
Along with a growing number of people at the turn of the century, Ole Evinrude was fascinated by the potential of the newly developed internal combustion engine, and he set up a firm to build small engines.
While Evinrude concentrated on the mechanical and engineering aspects of the new firm, he entrusted the bookkeeping and business end of the firm to his assistant, Bessie Cary. The story surrounding Evinrude's invention of the outboard boat engine revolves around a picnic that Cary and Evinrude enjoyed on Okauchee Lake, in the lake country west of Milwaukee, two and one-half miles from shore. Cary expressed a desire for a dish of ice cream and Evinrude rowed back to shore for it. Of course, the ice cream was melted by the time he returned, but Evinrude, inspired by the incident, was determined to design an engine that would replace the oar as a means of boat propulsion.
Cary and Evinrude were married in 1906. In 1907, Evinrude founded Evinrude Motors in Milwaukee. The firm immediately began to develop its first outboard motor, a one-cylinder, 1.5 hp (1.1 kW) model, which became an instant success upon its introduction in 1909.[2]
Because of Bessie's poor health, the Evinrudes sold their company in 1913, and Ole agreed to not re-enter the outboard motor business for five years. His inventive mind kept busy, however, and during his "retirement", he devised a much-improved, two-cylinder outboard engine. In 1921 he and Bessie formed the ELTO Outboard Motor Company (ELTO standing for Evinrude's Light Twin Outboard). This new outboard engine was also very successful, and in 1929 the ELTO company merged with the original Evinrude company (since renamed the Outboard Marine Corporation) and the Lockwood Motor Company, with Evinrude the president of this new company.
Bessie, who had retired in 1928 for health reasons, died in 1933 in Milwaukee. Ole Evinrude died the following year on July 12 in Milwaukee, and the company was taken over by their son, Ralph. In 1936 the Evinrude company merged with the Johnson Motor Company to form the Outboard Marine Corporation. During World War II the company manufactured motors for various types of military marine craft.
OMC declared chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2000 and its assets were subsequently acquired by Bombardier Recreational Products, which continued to build Evinrude branded outboard motors.
On May 27, 2020, BRP announced that they would be retiring the Evinrude brand and would exit the outboard boat motor market.[4] The modern Evinrude E-TEC motors were among the lowest emission and highest power-to-weight ratio outboards produced.
Evinrude's name continues today not only on many an outboard motor but also by the presentation of the Ole Evinrude Award. Given annually by the New York Boat Show, this award is presented in recognition of an individual's contributions to the growth of recreational boating.
These tanks were made from the early 1960s until the 1990s.

I just got one from my buddy since he's moving, they gave me a boat and it sat since 2013 with about 2 L of gas in the bottom because that's what I drained into today in the bottom of that tank is almost as clean as this one it's beautiful and I'm pretty sure it came with the mercury that's in it and it's an 85 and I only had a little bit of water in the bottom

Great job on the restoration. The "new" tank looks pretty slick. I see the description and comments on the color. If this is still used as a storage tank for gasoline for your gocart - it still needs to be red for gasoline. Doesn't really matter where the gasoline ends up. Gasoline storage cans need to be red. In the US, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that liquids with a flashpoint at or below 80 degrees F be stored in a red can with the necessary safety features. Flashpoint refers to the lowest possible temperature at which a chemical can vaporize and form an ignitable vapor mixture in the air. Liquids with a flashpoint at or below 80 degrees are considered highly flammable and more dangerous because of it: the lower the flashpoint, the more flammable the liquid. If you are using it as the actual gas tank on the gocart (not stated), you should be good.

My only concern besides the color of the tank is that you left the tank open to sandblasting, dust, and paint. Hopefully you checked and made sure it was still clean, but might I suggest next time you plug the holes in the tank with paper and tape or something? Also yeah, those fuel lines are probably not supposed to be painted, so... might need to fix that.
@AJRestoration
@AJRestoration 3 жыл бұрын
The tank was vacuum cleaned after, the tank is fine. Also Its for a gocart I'm building. so the fuel lines won't be used as they normally would. Only one fuel line will be used and that is the main one, the return will never be used again.

I have a feeling that "link" holding the gas cap on is something a previous owner did. As I recall originally they were chains.

Thumb up for your work and for the result, but considering that you`ve changed its original colour I would not call that resturation, better "customisation" , "personalisation" or else...

You did a really nice job but it isn't a restoration because you changed the color and used a modern OMC fuel tank decal. I would be a little concerned about powder coating the fuel hose nibs.

I don’t think spraying around fuel cap is a good idea though,it will eventually fall into the tank and could possibly get into carbs.

There is an autobody technique you should learn. It's called guide coating. AFTER your initial boy filler/sanding, just mist the entire piece with cheap enamel spry paint. The very lightest mist you can manage. You MUST use a flat sanding block. A real one. Not a 2" X 2" scrap of sand paper with two fingers. A flat block is the only way to hit only the high spots and none of the low spots. Once the guide coat is fully dry, lightly go over the piece with the sanding block. You're trying to skip over the low spots and dents. Stop. You have found the dents and low spots. Fill again with body filler an re-block. This way, you find all the dents.

@@AJRestoration -still it’s too large tank for a small go cart ! Those tanks are a lot different ,than, a Marine use tank for a boat on the water! And safety is still the top issue! Even in auto racing all tank fillers are different specific colors for the type of fluid in them ! The fire crew uses different chemicals on the fires as well as different methods in fighting fires ,and the color specific to the methods!☠️🔥
