Railmaster is definitely getting appreciation from me!!! I'm circling around this watch and getting ready to pull the trigger. I work for an American Class 1 railroad and I feel like I "deserve" this watch for all the headaches I endure with the railroad. So much so that I'm selling my motorcycle to get it. Awesome video and thanks for all the information.

I'm a fan of the more widely produced RailMaster. I know that they only have plain stick hands but they do have three very attractive dial colors(three I think). I think that they're a nice option for someone looking for a time-only watch with some subtle panache.

Great review of a under-appreciated masterpiece. Also being a Ranchero fan, I had been anxiously waiting the release of the Railmaster reissue and it was the first time in a very long time that I couldn’t wait for the Railmaster to hit the pre-owned market and so I pre-ordered it and purchased it new from my local Omega Boutique. I had to sell my Ranchero 2990 to help pay for it, but 3 years later, still no regrets and it has easily become my everyday watch as it has clicked all the boxes for me and has allowed me to aggressively thin down my collection.

Two years later….although I still love the Railmaster reissue, I did purchase another Ranchero. My tastes for larger watches has changed and I find that 36mm is the sweet spot for my sub-7inch wrist.

Thanks for reviewing all of these amazing Omega watches, Teddy. I think too often watch KZfaqrs overhype Rolex, Patek, etc. I always appreciate your attempt to shed light on other overlooked timepieces such as the Omega Constellation, Railmaster, etc.

I was given a Railmaster Trilogy for Christmas two years ago and it has been a constant joy in my daily rotation. Minimal design and discreet case size is such a marked departure from the Dateadjust, the Navatimer or even the other Omega...the blacked out Aqua Terra. That translates into significant wrist time for the Railmaster. I would also offer this mechanical watch world heresy thought - for pure timing excellence I can’t over endorse my Casio Oceanus 5000C with it’s bulletproof quartz movement and constant Bluetooth time adjustment. I use it to set all my mechanicals - including the beloved, understated Railmaster.

Just pulled the trigger on this watch, and I absolutely love it! I actually don't mind the fauxtina (I also have the Longines Heritage Military), in fact I look at it as orange accents, which work well with the tropical dial. Only thing I wish they did was add a screw down crown and upped the WR to at least 100 m. I understand this is supposed to be somewhat a re-release of the 2914, but they did change the domed crystal and also added a robust, ratcheting clasp, which is a modern feature.

I watched this review just after its release a year ago as I had just bought the model. I'm watching again after a year to see if I still agree with your sentiments . . . and I absolutely do. The watch has grown in stature with each passing month and its now my go-to watch, rather than mt Explorer. I love the 38mm dial and the awesome lume but I removed the metal band about six months ago in preference for a bright (Deutschland stripe) Nato strap. If any reader is hesitant to buy a Railmaster, don't be. Its a truly attractive, robust, daywear timepiece.

I really really really like the railmaster... a unique watch with a great history. I wish they would release a more modern black dial version without the faux-patina lume... Also, as always your macros continue to improve; especially like the shots of your constellation. Great video.

This is clearly the type of watch for people buying with their heart, appreciating simple beauty. Trend sensitive buyers will feel this one has little to offer. I feel these are not the types glancing at their watch and forget what time it is...

Just bought one of these and awaiting delivery. It's a rather beautiful, if simplistic, design and I imagine that it will do exactly what it says on the tin. Can't wait for it to get here.

I love the Railmaster and couldn't agree more that it's one of the most overlooked Omegas (thank you Teddy for raising this to everyone's attention!). However, when the reissues came out a few years ago - both the 1957 Trilogy and the newest incarnation - I opted to purchase a pre-owned 2503.52 from the mid-2000s. There's something about fauxtina that I just can't embrace. I also didn't like the sword hands or 'denim' dial features on the new incarnation of this watch. The 2503.52 has a clear case back and an arrow minute hand, which I love. I think this watch gets overlooked because (1) it's similar to the Aqua Terra line and (2) people will inevitably compare it to a Rolex Explorer and will buy the Rolex Explorer because... you know... Rolex.

Great review!...I agree with the polished surfaces being too shiny and I brushed mine with a Bergeron ceramic brush and it turned out great. Speaking of the Ranchero...I sold mine to help fund my RM LE when I ordered it new in 2017. No regrets as the RM has all the vintage charm, but all the conveniences of a modern piece.

Great video, thanks for sharing. This Railmaster is a lovely vintage styled three-hands time-only watch with a very modern classy technical movement. The only issue is its retail-price. There are actually not that many quality time-only with bracelet options out there but given that the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 and 39 are priced lower than this Railmaster, most people looking for a nice vintage styled quality piece will gravitate towards a Rolex. Personally, I have an Omega Seamaster 2501.81 and I look forward to Omega releasing a new 38/9mm Aqua Terra time only model (with Master Chronometer certification).

I'm reading a lot of reviews that question why the watch looks like it does. Something to keep in mind is Omega went to great lengths to make this (and the other two watches in the 1957 trilogy) look as close to the originals as possible. I get that some people don't like the faux patina lume. They tried to make it look just like an original. That was the point of the watch - a vintage reissue with modern tech and materials.

The Railmaster is one of my favourite Omegas. Hopefully one day I will own one. I'm not as big a fan of this dial in this edition. I love the rail track on the circumference and the cross hairs on the old Railmasters that unfortunately this one does not have. It is still a stunning watch and I would not say no to one!

I looked into the Railmaster a few years ago and was astounded by how many models there are. Some are huge then there is the model you featured here which I admit is not a favourite of mine. I’m leaning towards an Aqua Terra now shhhhh 🤫 another unpopular, under appreciated choice, let’s keep it that way for a while! Great review though Teddy liked the Ten & Two podcast too.

Although this is technically a sports watch, I think things like the polish case make this Railmaster more of a robust dress watch. It’s a beautiful watch though!

I do agree with your perspective of this piece. I think perhaps the Rolex explorer may have experienced a similar initial reaction, but soon took the stage for the quarter hour marking layout design.

Good video, but I'd like to leave a little note. I've always been a Railmaster fan, but so many authors and reviewers discuss the history of the Railmaster starting in 1957 only to jump to 2017. This passes over the wonderful Railmaster launched in 2003. While it isn't a master chronometer, it is a co-axial COSC chronometer with a beautifully symmetrical dial.

In my opinion, I would have preferred the railmaster to have the false patina as an option, just imagine those dials in white, but I agree that is an underrated watch

You're a major reason why I tried wearing smaller watches. I never thought the SARB035 would look good on my 7.5 inch wrist. But I tried it on, loved it, bought it. Now all the watches I look at are between 38-40mm. Except for divers. I think they wear better at a bigger size

36-38 mm is my sweet spot for everyday and dress pieces and 39-40 mm for sports watches. I like the feel of a smaller watch on the wrist. Feels like a nice fitting suit.

Big fan of the Railmaster. I love the Seamasters and the Speedmasters as much as anyone, but the Railmaster is a seemingly oft-overlooked beauty. Simple and elegant. Plus, the name. Come on, Railmaster just sounds so cool!

Great review of a deserving watch. A shame it will never be made as a non-limited edition with standard lume. That would be an instant success, the ultimate field watch, w/enough credentials to take on some pilot's watches as well. Can't you mention the possibility to Omega?

Great video but just a correction at 7:45 the hippocampus is not exclusive of the Seamaster line. A few Speedmaster models also have it. E.g. the OG and re-editions of the Speedmaster Mark II

Good call. I love the 1957 trilogy watches, but for me the Seamaster 300 edges it over the Railmaster, with its slim rotating bezel. That said, I'd be happy with either!

To me the lug shape on the non-limited edition is much more graceful than the flat straight surfaces of the 1957 version. My pick of the railmaster family would likely be ref. 220.10.40.20.01.001 because I would want the bracelet, but I also really like the coated nylon fabric strap on the ref. 220.12.40.20.01.001.

Beautiful watch and fair criticism about the polished finish, but that issue and the oversized (and also too shiny) buckle are easily improved by pairing it with a leather strap, if not a strap and wedding ring. 😉 Side note: It’s also an excellent option to the ubiquitous Explorer, which, sadly, as with their other overpriced pieces, too many of their owners seem to wear for others as much-or more-than themselves. Like the Railmaster, at least the Explorer (and Explorer II) aren’t as polarizing as the rest.

Alexander Booth Quality, preowned 114270 or 14270 can be easily sourced and is priced reasonably among sport rolexes... if you have the taste for the 36mm that is

I love my Railmaster 2503.52. Love the look of this one except for the fauxtina and 19 mm lug width. I’m a big fan of watches that are 3 handed time only. There’s needs to be more options. Many watches I love are ruined by the date.

Nice consetvative clean quality look with nice color on dial & classic Omega. Script/ Logo, also nice that its has no day/ date clutter.Price speaks to the quality , has severe competition ay that bracket. (Rolex Explorer for one) Thanx. P.S. Tx.

I like the dial but the shiny bezel, mirror finish and the reflections from the domed crystal make it a bit too shiny. Would have liked more brushed or satin surfaces

It's a good looking watch. For me, retail price is way too high when you compare the difference in price to the other two models in the 60th anniversary models. In the UK, there was a £200 difference between this and the Speedmaster 60th - an (automatic) 3 hander to a (manual wind) chronograph! The pre-owned prices have a much larger price difference which indicates that the second hand market is a truer indication of the prices. Apart from the clasp, its a very faithful cosmetic reproduction of the original and if a buyer is into that sort of thing (and I am!), you do get the benefits of a 5 year warranty, updated movement etc.

How do Omegas go with resale potential in the future? - I’m drawn to a Rolex submariner just because I know in 20+ years time I’ll be able to sell it for not much lost. I love the omega but not sure how much value I could get with it if I tried to sell one of their pieces 10+ years from now

Donavan - the Omega will not have the resale of a Rolex, very few watches do. For now that is. It's my opinion but I don't think Rolexes will continue on that path forever. But you should get the watch you like, not the one you will resell later.
