The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Grey Side of The Moon is a design masterpiece. From its first public showing at Baselworld 2015, the Omega Grey Side has been regarded as one of Omega’s finest watch design efforts of the twenty-first century. Less common than a Rolex Daytona, more special than a standard Speedmaster Professional, and more scratch-resistant than both, the Grey Side of the Moon is an Omega chronograph with charisma and magnetism. This is the ultimate luxury watch for collectors seeking just one exceptional timepiece that can go anywhere and do anything.
At 44.25mm in diameter, the Speedmaster Moonwatch Grey Side of The Moon appears massive on paper. It isn’t. The grey ceramic case and flanking sapphire crystals are diffuse materials that weigh far less than watch-grade 316L standard stainless steel. The lug-to-lug measurement of 50mm is sufficiently compact that even men with small wrists can wear this watch. The ceramic also renders the Grey Side of The Moon almost impervious to the wear, tear, scratches, and scuffs that quickly disfigure luxury watches made of metal.
The dial of the Omega Gray Side of The Moon is made of frosted platinum, and it features a “PT950” signature on its surface. All hands and hour indices are crafted from rhodium plated white gold for tarnish-resistance. This chronograph appears to be a classical “twin register” chronograph, but a co-axial set of chronograph hour and minute hands makes it possible to read chronograph hours, minutes, and seconds on a twin-counter dial. The hands, hour indices, tachymeter scale, and crown feature luminescent paint.
Omega uses an exclusive automatic caliber 9300 chronograph movement on the Grey Side of The Moon. This twin-barrel caliber includes a 60-hour power reserve, hacking seconds, and a feature that permits independent setting of the hour hand while traveling. A silicon hairspring, full balance bridge, and free-sprung balance ensure resistance to magnetism and shock. The George Daniels-invented co-axial escapement, precise five-position regulation, and COSC Swiss chronometer certification combine to yield an exceptionally precise and reliable timekeeper.
