Ive had the Jupiter for about 5 weeks now. While it felt like a toy to me for me at the beginning, I recently took it on a 3 week long trip overseas as a beater and something I would be ok with losing. Since then it's grown on me so much, I actually do really enjoy it and see it as being a real entry in my collection... its just so damn fun to wear.

I was on-board with this until Swatch dropped the ball about making them available online. The only way this release makes sense to me is to make these watches easily obtainable. I would have bought several just to have in the collection as a novelty and an online release would have brought Omega to the attention of a whole new generation of watch buyers and enthusiasts. Now it is just an interesting blip on the watch radar that will fade from view pretty quickly without any lasting impact as only those within close proximity to a Swatch boutique can get them. While I think the watches are fun, I will not travel long distances, stand in line, or pay over retail for them. I also don't understand the concern about these cheapening the value of the real moon watch. Yes it is a Speedmaster but it is NOT a Speedmaster Professional.

I own a Speedmaster Pro and want one of these too. I think these MoonSwatches are a great idea that bring attention to the brand. That said, I also think Swatch completely bungled the launch by making them exclusive to a handful of dealers. I wouldn’t drive 300+ miles to my nearest Swatch AD to buy one of these, line or no line. Hopefully they cave and put these up for sale online eventually.

1. Omega is 100% a luxury brand. Tudor is too. You can call them "Entry-Level Luxury" but that's still in the luxury realm. "Luxury" tier watches start at around 1000-2000 USD. Seeing as that's the point at which luxury-caliber specs start becoming standard--hand assembly and finishing, chronometer ratings, precious metals, advanced finishing techniques (such as the laser etching on the Seamaster dial), etc.--that's where the line should be. 2. Blame is not just on the flippers, it's on the retailers and brands who build their purchasing systems so easily exploitable by the flippers. There's a reason why Apple, for example, has been historically so good at warding off flippers, even as their products are so high in demand.
@BarkandJack
@BarkandJack 2 жыл бұрын
It really is all debatable and it would make for an interesting conversation. With regards to Tudor their own PR team say "tudor isn't luxury, we are a premium brand".
@sylinmino
@sylinmino 2 жыл бұрын
@@BarkandJack interesting, I did not realize that about Tudor's own PR team. That being said...I'm not sure if I agree with them lol. Sure, compared to Rolex they're not, but compared to so much of the rest of the industry, they're definitely in a price bracket often considered that. If it's not price that defines luxury watches, what does? I'd be curious to see a video where you really draw a line in the sand about what qualities explicitly define it to you.
@kpmcclellan
@kpmcclellan 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but Omega states they are luxury (check the Wiki and their site). Not sure a premium brand can get away with making a $35k all gold Speedmaster. Also they regularly create watches in excess of $100k. January they released the Canopus gold version of the Speedmaster - which is the most expensive at retail steal wealth watch on the market now .... since nothing can distinguish it from others other than the hidden laser engraved case ... very very few PP or AP, et cetera are made in steel. And we all know Tudor is entry level Rolex and designed as such. Omega guaranteed is not in a competition (other than to sell their own watches) with Rolex or anyone else, they are doing their thing ... always have. And in that maybe you are right - they are more a watch technology company than a status brand like Rolex or AP. Their movements are as accurate as Rolex, but never slow, they use Rhodium, which is more expensive and more durable than white gold, they don't advertise, or push exclusivity as much, since they are watches for watch geeks. Hence, the new CK 859 ... which is in my opinion is the sleeper hit of 2022 (sorry sprite). Keep an eye out for vintage prices shooting up. Speedmasters and Seamaster over the next 10 years will have auction prices increasing by a factor of 10-20. An Alaska project just went for $450k and a tropical speedy hit $3.4 million 6 months ago. Things are just getting started .... if you are in the know. Check out the Davidoff interviews by Wei Koh ... there's something going on and the Moonswatch is just the start ...

I hope they don’t just limit this collaboration to the Moonwatch, this could be just the start of something of bigger cute collabs. They could venture to expanding the concept to the Seamaster Omega x Swatch collab too: there are 31 varieties of the Sea theme for them to think about (e.g., Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red, Baltic, Arabian, South China, Celebes, etc). Another one is Railmaster collab series: the likes of Amtrak, British, Eurostar, Trenitalia, Oriental Express, SBB, etc). Better yet, the Constellation collab series would do great with so many possible variants.

‘Luxury’ is highly subjective Having worn a Lorus from Argos as a kid for £16, a £300 seiko is highly luxurious. As is a moonswatch. My millionaire cousin used to go through a Rolex a month. A seiko would be trash and a moonswatch a toy. Watchmakers ultimately make watches to make money. And this quartz collaboration is a great way for Omega to generate interest for themselves and sell watches. For one I think these are fun and look nice. So why not. Btw I have a speedmaster professional and I don’t care what people call these, they’re clearly a fun omega watch

"I hate how much negativity has been out toward Swatch...It isn't Swatch, it's the flippers...don't get grumpy with Swatch, get grumpy with the people who are flipping them." - Oof, Adrian, normally I'm a fan, but this is way off base. Where to start? You're right. It isn't the fault of Swatch that flippers are buying watches and keeping them out of the hands of genuine customers, in the same way that PS5s, Air Jordans, and graphics cards end up on eBay and StockX at hefty markups. That's an unfortunate side effect of demand outweighing supply and opportunists seeing a way to make a quick buck. It is what it is. But to say that Swatch bears no responsibility at all is a level of drinking the Kool aid I didn't think I'd ever see from this channel. If you take a look at other companies with this problem--Sony, Nike, Nvidia, to name just a few--all of them are at least trying to help their customers. Whether that's anti-bot measures, redirecting stock to different retailers, lotteries, line management systems at store restocks...there's a concerted effort being made to retain genuine customers that just isn't happening Swatch. Now, you could argue that this is all part of some grand marketing/PR plan. But, and this comes from someone that works in that industry, the confused communications (online sales anyone?), continued poor organisation at stores, and a general lack of stock suggests that Swatch wasn't quite prepared for this level of interest. That's perhaps short sighted, but it happens. But it's what Swatch has done since that's infuriated customers, which is to say, absolutely nothing. No systems to try and deal with flippers at stores, no bot prevention to allow online sales, nothing. That's a poor showing from a large consumer-facing company like Swatch. It has the resources to do better and, if it cares about its customers, it should. Swatch can't stop the flippers and it can't be blamed for them, of course. But it can make life harder for them and easier for its customers.

I have to say I think Omega is a luxury brand 100%. I take your point about premium brand but I genuinely think Omega’s heritage and expertise and quality of product absolutely qualify them as a luxury brand. They are certainly in the luxury price bracket. If you are talking about a distinction between the upper echelons, Patek, AP I get that… but I think it’s the wrong distinction to say Omega are not a luxury brand, when that is precisely what they are. It’s far better that an affordable version of a watch floods the market at a price point that’s not going to hurt the premium sector , and is legit and the revenue goes to the brands , rather than people buying cheap Chinese knock offs of the premium or luxury brands .

Another great video man, I’m still waiting to buy mine. However since they won’t be sold online, I’ll have to wait until I or a family member goes to a Swatch store since the nearest one to me is 8hrs away and I’m not making the journey for one. Keep up the great work brother ❤️

Gotta call BS on the "it's not swatch, it's not Rolex causing the issues". You know how they could fix it? Sell them online with a numbered queue. Rolex could do the same too. Doesn't even have to be online only. You go into the shop, put a deposit down, and get a number in the queue. But they both don't, because they want the artificial hype, that they themselves have generated. So they do deserve the hate directed at them.

I’ve owned Omegas but never a speedmaster and I’ve been through phases of wanting one and forgetting about it again. But this I think will make many new fans of a real speedy… it’s certainly reminded me I always wanted one. This is marketing at its best. A nice design around a very basic quartz movement based largely on the Swatch Irony chronographs (actually for the same price I would buy an all stainless steel Irony Night Flight or Boxengasse) rather than a watch made out of plastic with a bit of ceramic powder. There are much better choices around the 250 price point.

Most people would consider spending £4000-£5000 plus on an Omega, or indeed a Tudor, as a luxury purchase, so I would consider a reality check Adrian. No they are not Rolex, AP and all the other hyper models that demand huge premiums, but many thousands £££s spent on a single item that you wear simply to tell time on a wrist is a big outlay.

Love your videos, but think that saying Omega isn't a luxury watch (but Rolex is) is a bad take. Rolex makes millions of watches per year, any sense of exclusivity is falsely manufactured by the relationship between the ADs and flippers you say you hate. I'm not knocking Rolex, but rather clarifying that Omega is every bit the watch that Rolex is. The rest is branding. Even then, Omega has long been second (recently third, behind Cartier) in that regard.

Absolutely my thoughts there at this analysis. If i happen to walk in the Swatch dealer and if its there, i would buy one. Just for fun and for the sake of watch community history. If all MoonSwatches are sold out that day, that is absolutely fine. Absolutely.

Fair enough to state it is debatable whether OMEGA is a luxury brand, its your opinion. IMO what can be seen as ' luxury' is 'Subjective' but not, 'Objective'. You cant really define what is 'luxury brand' but 'exclusivity' yes ,you can, look how Rolex regulates their supply. BUT you CAN'T simply state the brand is not luxury if it is not exclusive, it's the whole different story. Those who earn low wages or salary can see OMEGA as a luxury brand if they decide to spend 90% of their whole year saving on a Seamaster, but some, just like you, with bunch of 'luxury' Rolex, bla bla can see that OMEGA is not luxury just because you can actually but them at retail at anytime without having your name written on the list. It's your EGO to state OMEGA is not luxury. You've had my respect, a Rolex and Omega fanboy,a Seamaster and Submariner owner, but not anymore. You've made a HUGE mistake. ****UNSUBSCRIBED

I really enjoy the look of the MoonSwatch and to me, is worth $250 US. I also have a couple of beater Swatches and they've been very durable. I also own a circa 1971 Speedmaster Professional, bought in 1988 for $375. Before 2015, it had been my daily...then I bought a Bulova Lunar Pilot. Today you can purchase a Pre-owned Lunar Pilot for between $200-$300...an absolute steal! The Lunar Pilot us a really fun watch to own and wear. My 8" wrist can accommodate the size. It's a real piece of history and it's +-10 seconds a year brings a smile to my face.

People complain about everything, but how lucky are we to be talking about watches/coffee etc, and how good is the overall watch industry. The health of the industry from the Big boys through to the independents, is better than ever before So people like you Adrian are excellent to watch, who look at the industry from a realistic point of view.

Nobody is confused as to whether Moonswatches are official products. To say they’re not “real Soeedmasters” is just to say that they lack some essential attributes that make other Speedmasters attractive, even if they have the superficial appearance of other Speedmasters. If I had my way as a child, I would have had a million cheap toys, all of which I would have thought were fun (even if I quickly lost interest in them). I had to learn to appreciate the value of having fewer things of higher quality over more things of lower quality. What’s disappointing about these has less to do with Omega’s business decisions, and more to do with what they reveal about the preferences of people in the watch community.

I disagree that it is purely the fault of flippers that this is unavailable. There is enough interest among watch enthusiasts and non-watch people alike to still cause a shortage of these. They’re fun and people want them. I think the anger at Swatch/Omega regarding the role out is justified as they clearly weren’t putting the customer experience as their priority. From a marketing perspective it is absolutely genius and deserves respect, especially with the timing. But as a customer, it leaves me feeling disinterested and unlikely to actually purchase one should they become readily available. Fun concept and I’d like to see Swatch Group companies doing similar collaborations in the future, I just hope they find a way to make them more accessible.

Agree about the flipper comments but I do think Swatch could have handled the queuing and buying differently. It seems in some stores in other countries that they have used ticketing systems or ensured the same folks aren't coming back each day etc. Whereas in London it has been abysmal from the start. The same individuals day in, day out and nothing was ever done to try and improve things. I'd like to get one but I am happy to wait it out.

It’s a Swatch watch in the shape of a Omega. As long as you understand that then you’re fine. It’s amazing that they even entertained the idea of doing it let alone doing it. I like the way people have hated it then loved it and then still hated it. It turns out it’s been a big success but it could have been so different. Omega have tried many different things over their very long history.( much longer than Rolex’s ) Some have been failures and some have been very successful, they almost went bust and then they turned things around. It’s why I like Omega so much. They aren’t stuffy or boring and the Speedy is cool on any wrist and at any budget now. Omega is a luxury brand buy they way. Tudor isn’t because it’s another companies sub brand. Rolex second hand values are falling fast even though Adrian said it couldn’t if I remember correctly 🤔 “theirs too much money involved for it to go down ” 🤔

I had the ‘reduced’ Which presented far too small on my 7 1/4 inch wrist so I sold it. I will be purchasing another Someday. These are great… Are they a toy? Oh yes sort of there are no worry wear… Great for shorts and flip-flops and if it wasn’t for the water resistance rating gardening as well! There’s no way to them otherwise they were exactly like a speed master… I might try to collect all of them and keep them all in their own watch box… They’re that fun! Cheers!

I think what a lot of watch snobs don’t get is that the target audience for these watches are more than happy to pay over retail to get their hands on them, further creating hype and mania ahead of the next release. They aren’t meant for enthusiasts, they’re meant for the same kids who buy and resell Supreme and Nike dunks on a weekly basis. Queueing up to buy the latest hyped trainers or piece of collaborative clothing is a huge sub culture and although the profits are small (for the reseller), many brands have built themselves on the pure unobtainability of their products. Swatch and Omega knew exactly what they were doing with these watches.

Omega has always been known as a luxury brand . Same with tag heuer. Even seiko are to some people. If your a non watch person , but wanted a watch to tell the time , you would probably just get a casio. Let's face it, if your spending north of 1k on a watch , it would be a luxury brand /watch to most people. With a seiko sla043 costing £4080 new now, are you going to say that's not a luxury watch ? Because it is. I don't often disagree with you , but your wrong saying omega and tudor are entry level luxury. Maybe to a millionaire Adrian. Buy a solid gold tudor and it will cost you more than a rolex sub , so they aren't exactly cheap brands. I love watches but it's not often I see people with omegas on , or Tudors etc , because you have to be into watches to pay 3k plus for a watch for a start !!!
