In this episode of the Sufi Heart Podcast, Omid shares the celebrated literary masterpiece “The Conference of the Birds” from Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar.

Our poem begins with a heartfelt invocation of God. Omid helps us understand the Sufi perspective of God that Attar writes from.

(17:30) The Winding Path
Omid reflects on the ever-winding and unfolding spiritual path we each walk on. He looks at the role of the prophet on our spiritual path and the special that light they shine on us. We explore parallels between the story of “The Conference of the Birds” and our own spiritual path.
“The totality of ‘The Conference of the Birds’ is built around a pun. Where the birds who complete the path come to see themselves as a reflection of the divine. Attar already tells us at the beginning about this punchline. That we set on the path having been told the ultimate mystery, that we are reflections of God. Yet when we come to the end of the path, we realize ,with surprise, that we are in fact the reflections of God.” - Dr. Omid Safi

We look at a story within our main story that reflects the main themes of devotion and realization. Omid examines the ways that Attar challenged popular conceptions like gender and authority centuries before popular opinion would begin to catch up.

"Uaim" in gaelic means 'voice' and and suggests Oral tradition. "Uaim ma" suggests Good Voice. Would it be worthwhile looking at Old Irish words and see if old sayings, of a pre Bronze Age era, may have been retained in a simple and unsophisticated landscape. Could they retain the Sú( harmony) of the nature's golden ratio ( phi/ fi). Sullivan or Súilamháin (one eye) is the commonest surname in this simple or basic island 😉.

"Anim-istigh" in gaelic means "soul-within". Wonder has Greco-Romano ideas and the ideas of Empires - breaking over ancient agreed borders much maligned "Animists"? There were centuries of educated tribes living and learning and not spilling human blood, before the era of metal making human killing tools. How the ancients regretted some advances. Peace to all the Creatures (of Allah, Oneness, Creator, Almighty, Evolutionay time, Tree of Life, Blessing, of Light) on the planet. Why do we not admit we are Animals and the ancient spiritual struggles of how to understand our 8 human skin holes (4 in the body and 4 in the head). Let us join the instinct of the body holes and the perception of the head holes - let us find balance and recognise the cosmic orbits (Earth's axis, Moon, Solar). Our ancestors knew of the inner soul and the great after Light. Use whatever "ink shapes" you like, we are all One. Forget Roman Empire beliefs and their "Extinguished Light" (Éag-lais) and based on the "Wisdom of Fear" (Eagla-Is).

Jesus 'fulfilled the scriptures' in the old testament.. The Israelite's foretold His journey in the exodus from Egypt to the promised land (failing in the wilderness and the promised land).. He was baptized (red sea).. Tempted to not keep the 'law' 40 days in the wilderness.. Tempted by the law to 'not love His neighbour as Himself' by not casting the first stone (promised land).. Dying to 'self' on the cross (renting the veil into the holy of holies in Solomon's Temple mount).. Your prophet followed Jesus.. From Mecca (law), to Medina (love), to The Temple Mount (heaven).. 'The kingdom is within'.. Jew's, christian's and muslim's spiritual journey ends at the same place.
