OMP Hobby's OMP M1 EVO is one of the best small (under 150 size) RC helicopters on the market in my opinion. The M1 doesn't cost a fortune, parts are inexpensive, they are built well and prove to be tough little rascals.
I've had the original OMP M1 for almost two years now and it has simply been fantastic. This latest EVO version builds on that proven direct drive platform with a stiffer carbon fiber frame and metal boom mount for super responsive flying if one chooses.
The OMP M1 EVO can however be setup for very tame and docile flying just like any good quality collective pitch RC helicopter. In short, it's a great collective pitch trainer, right up to a responsive and predictable 3D performer. If you want to build your collective pitch flying skills in your own back yard, the M1 is one of the best options going.
The OMP M1 EVO only weighs about 124g so it falls well below the 250g RC weight threshold for registration/restrictions in many countries and no remote ID BS needed for it for all my American friends.
So, shut down your RC Heli flight simulator, charge up some packs and head outside to get some fresh air and fun with OMP's M1 EVO.

Absolutely on the canopy. That bold diagonal white/grey stripe really divides up the color along with the "eyes" making it pop regardless of background color. Wonder if OMP did some research on that livery? Haha, S _ _ T getting real is there; but yes, you can barely detect it as I had the volume on the radio turned down and my big mouth overshadowed it. 🙃

Great job John. Has become my favourite heli. A little pricey here in Canada but great quality unlike the cheaply made micros from certain other companies. This is what I expect in a quality product. As per your advice in the past I’ve tamed mine down. I haven’t tried any tricks…still trying to fly nice circuits…too much time in safe I guess but how do you think this would hold up in a crash? Sorry if you’ve answered some of these questions in the vid. Went straight to comment because I’m sure you did your great thorough job as usual. It’s such an a stable little flier I hate the thought of crashing it. Thanks, here’s to more flying than repairing this summer.

Hi Steve, Glad to hear you are enjoying your M1. As for crash survivability, like any small micro heli, it totally depends on the amount of energy released during the impact. If you can keep impact energy low (fly over a nice soft thick lawn to absorb energy & power down any time you are about to pile it in), chances are nothing will break. Fly it over a hard surface and don't power down before it hits, things will 100% break & bend.

@@Rchelicopterfun Sound advice. Thanks John. I do make it a point to fly over grass though I’ve still had blade strikes and or broken booms, along with broken servo horns of course. Any advice on avoiding blade strikes? If I get this straight, when a crash imminent always hit throttle hold and let it drop rather than trying to instinctively lower the throttle and jump back into stability or some of both? I know dropping the throttle can be a bad idea with a lot of negative pitch. Thanks again, keep the reviews coming.

Hi Steve, Seeing that you mentioned you "tamed mine down"; I'll presume you have my setup & tips ebook that covers that process and are using those recommendations. In chapter 3 on micro CP heli setup, specifically on pages 47 & 48 if you missed it, I cover minimal energy release throttle hold pitch curves. Do that, fly over a nice thick soft lawn to further minimize energy release and rarely will the M1 break. I've stuffed mine in at pretty much every angle with TH engaged using that setting, and unless it pogo sticks tail first, it will stand up to most impacts.

@@Rchelicopterfun Thanks but I’m not sure I can set a pitch curve for throttle hold on the E6 stock radio. Never bothered trying to bind it to my DX6e. I like the Eachine radio fine. I’m using 30 40 50 65 85, not sure if using 50 75 100 would be better for positive.

I'm not a 3D flyer, just want to cruise nicely and practice my skill. And I don't need a fast helicopter as well. Because you've mentioned that the EVO is kinda "predictable" flying machine, therefore, I'm aiming more to the EVO. But on the other hand, the Goosky S1 is more modern technology and must faster, I'm abit nervous. Thanks for your words...

Both are identical in performance/build quality/size with variations on the same design. In short get which ever you can find for the best price and has the best parts support in your specific area.

Always informative, thank you John! Question, When you're checking the head for loctite, how do you know if it's been applied or not without breaking the seal if it has been? Hope that makes sense...

Good question. You can generally feel the resistance to turning in the fastener the moment you start unthreading it if loctite has been applied. Provided you don't thread it out all the way, the loctite will still hold fine when re-torqued, especially on these tiny fasteners. However, if I can feel little resistance when I'm threading a fastener back in after I partially loosen it, I'll generally remove the fastener completely and re-apply the loctite, especially on critical fasteners such as the head axle bolts.

I just bought an HDX Ripper 180 that's coming in tomorrow (couldn't pass up on the price $239) and the screws on my upgraded metal swashplate and head for my xk k110s had some screws loose so I wanted to make sure the 180 is set up correctly. BTW, have you flown the HDX Ripper 180? Looks pretty solid, but I'm pretty new

Hey John. Do you have a video (or maybe some cliff notes) for newbies to RC Helis? What I'm thinking of specifically are some brands/models of batteries and remotes. Maybe some "nice to have" things as well like... cases? Because I want to also buy this heli, but I'd need all the extras to actually pilot it. Pretty much cover all that stuff on my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com/ As for the M1 specifically, you don't really need any extras. The case it comes with is good. Spare parts are an experience thing. More times than not, even if you have a good supply of common spares, something obscure will break/bend in a crash that you don't have and you'll be going parts shopping anyway. I cover that in my Setup & Tips ebook. Batteries are very specific for any heli that uses a holster type battery bay (like the M1) over a tray that has more size leeway. In other words, you have to get either the exact OMPHobby M1 packs, or packs specifically sized for the M1 and there are not many. I only know of the GensAce ones, but I haven't looked for any others either since I'm primarily a GensAce fan boy.

When you check for locktite do you apply a little more before you re install?

Usually yes but that statement comes with caveats. Some types of thread locker (ie. encapsulation/reusable type), will last for several cycles and don't need reapplication every time, but the M1 didn't have encapsulation lock. If there is some build up of normal thread lock (Loctite 242 or 243 for example) on the threads it can be reused once or twice. If you feel the fastener has drag/resistance when rethreading, especially on these tiny screws that don't require strong locking, then I would feel pretty comfortable with reusing. If however the fastener threaded in with little resistance, then I would definitely reapply a smidge more Loctite.

These days many young people interest in this category. But.. this hobby is not cheap for beginners. What else we have to buy? Great video..... quick question, I just bought the m1 evo s-fhss version for my futaba t14sg, I also bought the m2 evo rtf with the RadioMaster Zorro transmitter, my question is will I be able to bind my m1 evo s-fhss protocol to the radio zorro transmitter, and if not ,is there something I can use to bind it to the zorro, or am I just stuck only using the s-fhss protocol.... just curious because I'd rather my son use the zorro transmitter when we fly vs. Instead of using my futaba, if none of this is possible, I'll just purchase the omp protocol version.. thanks in advance for your time.... awesome videos.... I appreciate them.

Depends on the Zorro version. If it's the one with multi-protocol (4in1 chip) S-FHSS is one of many protocols it already has available. See Multi-Module's website if you are not familiar with multi-protocol along with all the supported protocols.

@Ben Boot - I would have to know what version of the T14SG it is. The 14SG is still a current radio model after all with several updates over the years. With that said, it's not really the radio that dictates compatibility, it's the receiver. If you can find a micro sized 6 channel or higher S-BUS RX that works with your radio then it will work fine with this or any small/micro CP heli for that matter that has an S-BUS input on the flybarless control board like all of OMP's helicopters have.

@TheRocketnorman - RadioMaster TX16S I use the same settings I cover in my Setup & Tips ebook: www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-helicopter-tips.html And yes, to answer your other YT comment question, you always check the collective pitch output on any collective pitch RC helicopter and set up your pitch curve/s accordingly, including micro sized ones like this if you want your bird setup correctly to your skill level and flying well. Of course, these are too small to use standard pitch gauges so I use the cardboard wedge and interpolation method as discussed in chapter 3 of the setup & tips ebook.

John I just got the M2 EVO with the Radiomaster Zorro. First time I got an OMP product and I am throughly impressed. Ordered some Gensace batteries for it….as that seems to be what you prefer.

@@marka6487 Thanks Mark. Nick was right, it didn't fit. What I did was place three layers of double sided tape on the top of the battery and that made it fit perfectly. It's a skinner battery, so, there is a lot of space between it and the frame, but I flew several times and it worked great! I noticed that the GensAce battery gets significantly warm during a 7min flight, however, the stock OMP battery doesn't even change.

Can I bind the OMP protocol controller board with an open tx radio?

The operating system of the radio (Open/Edge TX) has nothing to do with protocol compatibility. Protocol compatibility is 100% reliant on the RF module. So provided your radio has the 4-1 RF Multi-protocol-module, and you are running a version of firmware in it (the multi-module) that has OMP protocol it will work. I think I pretty much covered that in video. As I stated at the end of the video, I couldn't tell any difference between the two. If you already have the original version, the only reason I could see for getting the EVO version would be 1. Your original is beat to hell and it needs replacing. 2. You want a second M1 in the fleet 🙂

Can the wires be disconnected at the motor on the omp m1.i need to replace tail fin, in order to do this I need to remove the tail motor. Help please

Hi Donald, the entire tail motor wiring harness is direct soldered to the back of tail motor under the protective heat shrink exiting the motor so the only way I know of to slip the tail fin assembly off, is to side the entire harness out the boom (unless you want to mess with de & re-soldering at the motor).

Not odd at all. A tiny head like this with fragile microscopic washout arms & links - no thanks. DFC is still the best way to provide swash following on these small micros.

Me Neither (understand why they went with washouts on the M2 EVO). 1. From a mechanical stand point, I honestly don't see going with washouts being any improvement on small helicopters under 250-300 size. More parts, more weight, more finicky to work on, and more potential for swash following slop to develop or binding in the washout arm/s. 2. Operationally, they do allow you to run softer head dampening for running lower head speeds, but on small helicopters that really isn't an issue or even an option with most. Just running the blades a little looser in the grips will generally get rid of any cyclic wobble on these little guys when running slow head RPM. 3. From a robustness stand point, the other washout benefit is during a blade strike not quite as much energy is transmitted down into the swashplate with washouts so servo gears may not strip as easy; but again on these smaller birds, the DFC arm (fusible link if you will) will generally snap long before servo damage occurs - at least with metal geared servos. Yep, totally anecdotal 🙂

I just got my M1 Evo, and using a Zorro radio that i had prior, im not sure if my throttle curves are properly setup as it seems to be really low headspeed..the last ive flown however was not a flybarless setup like this one so im rather new. What are your throttle curve settings for normal/idle1 and idle2?

Yes, when using omp protocol. Of course a flat line throttle curve works as well to produce a fixed rpm.

As I stated before, *only OMP protocol allows governor*. It's a function of the built in OMP RX, not the ESC in this case. Only the OMP RX will allow governor function of the ESC. Any external RX won't allow it. For confirmation & details, contact OMPHobby directly.

GooSky doesn't have an M1 sized equivalent (at least yet) so the decision is an easy one, OMP.

Respectfully don't agree. While I prefer flying bigger egg beaters, it's simply not nearly as convenient as running out the door in your own yard to get some time on the sticks with a small heli. We won't even talk about the small size benefits of cost differential, intimidation factor, LiPo shipping restrictions, and energy release during a crash. Then of course the single biggest one these days - growing restrictions & regulations for all over 250g RPAS. Thankfully there are lots of size options from many manufacturer's for everyone's specific needs be it micro to monster. Do you not agree it's nice to have a full size spectrum to choose from - I sure do.
