On Cloudneo First Run Review: Two runners try the On Cyclon recyclable running shoe

The On Cloudneo is the first shoe to launch from On’s Cyclon scheme, which is a subscription service where you pay a monthly fee to get access to the Cloudneo, which is completely recyclable. You pay your sub, get the shoe, run in it until it's worn out then send the Cloudneo back and get a new one, while On recycles the materials from the old shoe to make more of them.
It’s a very appealing idea, but how does the On Cloudneo actually perform on the run? Run Testers Tom and Nick give their first impressions here.

Great review! I felt the same way with my Cloudneos. The were stiff during my first few runs, but I’m hoping that the overall feel softens up in time. Cheers! 🙌🏽🙌🏽

Makes you wonder who ON's test group is? They really need to come in somewhere between where they are now, but not full "fuel cell" type squish. A nice stable versatile shoe which has enough softness to work for daily/mid-distance runs.

aww, not what I wanted to hear. haha. I signed up for the Cyclon subscription pretty much when they first announced it. I love the idea, the sustainability... but if it's a bad shoe it's just more waste. Hopefully it will soften up (although knowing ON, I doubt it) or they can continue to develop the technology to be that versatile shoe that everyone does want to reach for.

Yeah I (Nick) was pretty excited by the idea and hopeful after seeing the design spec of the shoe, but it didn't fulfil those hopes. Yet, anyway!

The question is: is it durable? Is the grip great? The upper is it made well or does it break down? It reminds me of ASICS Glideride 3, I never wore it hope to explore this Swiss brand

would your opinion of the shoe change if you were a middle distance runner doing a little less than 50 miles per week (80km)? I always train on grass and dirt and do more speedwork. How would you rate this shoe from a middle distance training perspective? Thanks!

I have just recycled my Salomon index 1 .It was great for 100km then got uncomfortable as the midsole felt hard.Would have liked to keep them for another 100.Purchaised in Jan 21.If they made a cloudstratus replica but out of those materials worked on midsole that is as soft as the original and priced it LESS by 10% then they may have a winner as it would prove to be cost effective for the owner.Also parley and salomon should all get in touch to share ideas to really compete as it's a great idea but so far poorly executed.

On is the most overrated brand in running. I tried four shoes and had to return them all. Non of them made it to 150 km without a breakdown. And all of them where pretty hard… I don’t think I will try an On shoe again 🤷‍♂️

I agree. I tried to like it because they were the “it” shows for a while. I only wear it to lounge. Wouldn’t wear it for any training.

Very disappointing if they are that hard, I signed up for the subscription as soon as it was announced but was expecting something like an Endorphin Speed, may decline when they ask to confirm the subscription

@@TheRunTesters I have met quite a few fast runners that really love the base model, which seem to have great performance running ride. The “super shoe” seems like a great value And my understanding is that you can send back all of the shoes to Atreyu, for recycling. Total bummer this is not available for your team to review!

Do Atreyu still offer a subscription? I thought that they stopped that service a year or so ago,No mention of it that I can find on their website

@@dan-zo4eb Correct. Atreyu stopped their subscription program and stopped taking back used shoes a while ago.

I just cancelled my Cyclon subscription after less than a month (even as a early subscriber I have 3mos free) Their policy is 2 pairs over 12 months, so the shoe is actually $180 usd a pair, at that price, it is no comparison to Nike Zoomflys in terms of performance and I don't think it would last 6 months as daily trainers, and because they are so white, almost blinding under the 🌞, it is not a good shoes for daily wear either... I believe you need to pay a bit extra to be responsible and sustainable but I just can't find a use case for them...

The joke runners always say is that the only On shoe that has cushion is the cloudmonster and that's their maximum cushion shoe. All the others feel like wood. With the same price, you're better off purchasing asics, nb or hoka. All of them are bang for the bucks.

If I was Tom....I wouldn't risk Chicago with further testing of this shoe, I think the first impression was accurate enough, you don't need a calf flare to confirm it 👍🏃🦾
