Today’s clip is the attack on Piz Gloria by Draco’s men in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (1969). Due to the altitude and high winds the helicopters couldn’t land so the stuntmen had to jump out of the choppers instead. Stunt coordinator Richard Graydon said: “You didn’t know exactly how far you were going to sink into the snow. And being fairly small I found myself up to my nose, so just the top of my hat was visible.”

Diana Rigg was one of the few actresses at the time who could do action scenes and hold her own (thanks in large part to her three years as Emma Peel on "The Avengers"). Most leading ladies of this era would seem out of place battling bad guys on screen but Rigg makes it work.....

Culture shock. He wasn't bad as Bond, his way of playing the character was just rather different to Connery's, which was all the audience knew at that point. The same thing happened when Dalton took over from Roger Moore, but to an even greater extent.

Most realistic of the action endings. You can really get into the logistical efforts to fly those choppers at altitude drop the team and succeed. Has a bit of cinema verité falir to it too. Machine guns have a different, lower pitched sound. Even as a kid I thought this was the baddest ass assault in the Bond Universe. The jumper from the chopper goes headfirst on purpose!

It's not "just" Lazenby. The plot of this one has been constructed around Bond falling in love, for which he had to appear more fragile and weak than ever before, especially during his escape from Piz Gloria and the subsequent chase through the nearby villages. This feels a bit alienating and drags on for a good bit, which for me I find it kills the mood midway through the movie. On top the conclusion of the movie isn't really satisfying. Bond loses for the first time, I could be okay with that but not in this one as it was totally avoidable. Had Bond taken the time to make sure Blofeld was dead after the bobsled chase, and he should know to do that as the veteran secret agent he is, the movie could have ended differently. Even had Blofeld not been found Bond would have known to stay careful and maybe not have a public wedding sometime soon. Instead he gives his arch nemesis a chance to get away and a chance to exact revenge - two mistakes in a row. Duh. This would indeed never have happened to the other fella. This all feels a bit too much constructed just to get to a bad ending and not enough like a logical flow of events.

For 1969, Blofeld's plan was terrifying. We had something similar happen naturally in the early 2000s. There was an outbreak of FMDV in the UK that spread across continental Europe. The disease didn't kill any livestock directly, but it injured them so badly and spread so quickly that the outbreak ended with the culling of hundreds of millions of cattle, swine, goats, and sheep, and cost the EU in total something around 10 billion dollars of lost revenues simply because of the number of animals infected and then killed.

From what I gather, Dalton was considered for the role but he thought 💭 he was too young( 24 or 25) ? Patrick Mower was also asked but turned it down( he was a year younger than George. Also Oliver Reed was considered, a lot of people think he would have been an excellent Bond, it was his drinking and divorce from his first wife that stop him being chosen 😒.

I like this thinking. Bonus points if at least one of the main Super Mooks is a former British SAS/SBS that knows Bond, and was the reason he got Shanghai'ed in the car earlier in the film. Like "Oh, hello, James! Been about ten years! Come here - my boss wants a talk with you and he's not taking 'no' for an answer." Then proceeds to relieve him of his gadgetry because he knows where he wears it at, while keeping it very Britishly polite and gentlemanly.

Most original plot of any 007 franchise. They broke the mold and made a Bond film into a real piece of cinematic art. Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas nailed it, and George Lazenby would’ve only gotten better given the opportunity I think it was too much change (different 007 actor + not the “formula”) for the audience which is why it didn’t do well at the box office.

@@marioozzie Look, you have your opinion and I have mine. Neither one is the truth. I think he did just fine in his one movie of a series, NONE of which is exactly Shakespearean material! They are for entertainment, and he entertained me. If you were disappointed, then you either need to lower your standards or move on to material with more teeth in it. But as a self-proclaimed "expert" in acting you don't impress me much, to paraphrase Shania Twain.
