ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE | Bob Chase

It’s Bond vs. Blofeld on a bob run. The climax of ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE, was created with the help of former world bobsleigh champion Franz Kapus. The moment where Bond comes out of the bob and slides along the wall was unintentional but was so spectacular it was incorporated into the sequence.

Yes, for a man in his eighties, George Lazenby is in fine form. Last year, he was photographed riding a bicycle in London. Among other things, he was doing motocross into his sixties! Just what one would expect from a retired 007. I’m glad about two things: that he didn’t stick around to do crap like “ Man With The Golden Gun”; and that he is still here to see how much his film is appreciated, however belatedly. (I take pride in having done so from the beginning - Christmas 1969.)

My favorite pre Craig Bond movie. Lazenby totally pulled off who the F*ck else is Bond? I'm Bond, let's go. And that Toboggan scene is not only great, it's the first time movie Bond had actual hand to hand combat with the main villain. Only once repeated at the end of Goldeneye in another great scene. (For England, James? No. For me)

John Glen directed this scene. He went on to direct the famous parachute jump in "The Spy Who Loved Me", the opening of "Moonraker" and, of course, the five consecutive Bond films of the 80s. A true master of his craft. Interestingly, John Glen recalls working with Lazenby as rather uncomplicated. Most of his co-stars, as well as producer Broccoli and director Hunt, usually describe Lazenby as being kind of a douche on set, but John Glen got along with him.

Yes, John Glen shot the scenes under the instructions and storyboards of Peter Hunt. John said "When I headed over, Peter shared details of the On Her Majesty’s Secret Service bobsled sequence and said “How would you like to direct this?” I took 10 minutes to read the sequence - it was a very good action scene. Peter had run behind schedule in Switzerland because, as usual, as soon as a film crew arrives, the snow stops and the sun shines. The bob run was melting away so he needed someone to go in and shoot it quickly before it all disappeared. I jumped at the chance and within a couple of days I was on my way to Switzerland! It was the most important film I’d worked on at that time. A fantastic crew and fantastic facilities. I worked mainly with the expert skiers. I think I was the only one who didn’t ski. "

A lot of action sequences like this one were ahead of their time and that is one of the many reasons the older Bond films from the 60's still stand out today and paved the way for a lot action blockbusters later on to continue and advance the techniques.

Savalas is Greek like me, and advertise Greece in the film (What were all the world's charms to mighty Paris, when he found that first dawn in the arms of his Helen?). In novel, Blofeld's father was Polish, and his mother was Greek, hence his Greek name Stavro. But Yul Brynner is closer to the role, as required by the film series. I hated this film as a kid. Over the years I've gradually warmed to it, first thinking that it's a great film despite having a 'lesser' Bond, and finally arriving at the conclusion that it's the best Bond film and one of the best Bond performances. Lazenby's a more human and vulnerable version of the character compared to Connery, and that works perfectly with the film. A lot of people talk about how it was a missed opportunity not to have the definitive Bond - Connery - in this film. But Connery was visibly bored with the role at this point, and wouldn't have given a performance worthy of the film. The real missed opportunity is that Lazenby didn't come back for a direct sequel to OHMSS.

Yes, but the reason they delayed it is because the Snowfall in the Swiss alps wasn't as good as they needed that year, so they pushed forward with You Only Live Twice instead.

Longest bobsled run ever. A woman could literally get pregnant at the top, jump in the sled by herself, and at the end there would be the mother and her new baby crossing the finish line.

When you throw something from a moving object it initially has the speed of the former until halted by resistance and doesn`t stay flat on the spot where it lands such as the grenade thrown backwards by Blofeld.

I think this was a very underated Bond film. I think George Lanzeby did a nice job as 007. Sean Connery, naturally is my favorite, but I've come to appreciate the Roger Moore films, and George Lanzeby's only Bond film. And, as time passes, I really enjoy this film more and more. A great story, with a great cast, and of course Emma Peel, Diana Rigg.

James Mathhew I think Donald Pleasance is the greatest because (although he had a short role) he had that deranged face that Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld had, and I think that’s the great feature of Blofeld

@@nickymckellar6423 Pleasance wasn't remotely imitating nor commanding as a villain. Huge miscasting given the all nice, sweet guys he played in films prior. Especially the sweet blind guy he played in The Great Escape. Great actor in general but just wasn't ever a good fit for a villain role. Its like giving Audrey Hepburn a villain role. Just simple doesn't work and looks completely out of place both in the film and who the actor is and portrayed for most of their career.

Telly Salvalas is easily without question the best of all of them. He was imitating, menacing and very commanding as a villain. So much so Bruce Timm used him as inspiration for Lex Luthor (the best one ever done in media) in Superman The Animated Series, Justice League TAS and Justice League Unlimited. When you watch those cartoons you can very clearly see the resemblance in both the looks and the voice acting by Clancy Brown. He also was the inspiration for Dr Evil who was of course a parody of Blofeld in the Austin Powers films.
