Thanks for another amazing walkthrough and demo! I’d love to see a video where you directly compare a Jaguar and Jazzmaster tonally, and maybe offer insight about what you think the strengths of each are and where they each respectively shine. I know there are plenty of videos out there doing this, but I know you’d do it best 😊

Over the past few days I’ve watched soo many of your videos, and I sincerely thank you for the knowledge that you share. I’m going to a relatively local store next week and trying out a CV 60s JM lefty that they are getting in from their warehouse. I like it I buy it, safe now in the knowledge that I have received from your good self that I can get it playing beautifully with the correct setup. Thanks.

I love the muted sound of Jags, but I hate how the mute makes the strings go slightly sharp when engaged. Even with minimal pressure and correct mute adjustment they still go a bit sharp, because the vibrating length of the string has been slightly reduced. So on my own Jag, I repurposed the trem lock to fix the tuning when the mute is engaged. The trem lock is set to push the trem down ever so slightly, so when I flip the mute on I also engage the lock and it stays in tune.

Great video once again Mike. That is what a Jaguar should sound like; punchy, focused and with plenty of mids. That's the old, flat pole pickups. They hold some magic that the later staggered pole pickups and reissues don't seem to have. The original flat pole pickups have a great attack and midrange focus rather than the brighter, slightly thinner sounding later pickups.

Sounds great (as always!) 😁 A mute question: do you often have mutes that actuate as easily as that? I've tried fitting one both to a body that was pre-drilled for the mute and one where I drilled the holes myself, and with both, the 'switching' is stiff and doesn't fully engage in either position sometimes. Any rookie mistakes I'm likely making or reccomended tweaks to the mute parts? I've tried tightening it down low and that makes it quite stiff. Any higher and it interacts with the bridge itself which can't be good for keeping intonation. Using slight neck shims to allow for proper bridge height too!

And second i would like to know how can i get one of those t-shirts that you're wearing in this video? Thank you man!
@Puisheen
@Puisheen 11 ай бұрын
So long as you have a luthier you trust, nothing wrong with a refret to your liking! Jescar, Dunlop, Stew Mac--all of those brands have a ton of options in the medium jumbo department. If I want a bigger fret I often use Stew Mac 149, but I prefer the smaller 148 myself. The T-Shirt is from Fretboard Journal's The Truth About Vintage Amps podcast

Hey Mike, I have a very similar '63 (literally down to the shorted neck pickup). It plays decent as it is, could use some new frets, BUT the real issue is that the truss rod no longer offers any additional relief at it's loosest setting. Any recommendations to remedy this? Does it need to be heat pressed?
@Puisheen
@Puisheen 11 ай бұрын
Joe! If the rod is maxed out with very little effect, then I'd suspect that heat treatment is the only way to get it straightened out. Of course, I haven't seen the thing and can't say for certain, but I see this a lot and generally at this point, it's the best way to deal with this issue.
@Joe_Andrus

Hi Mike, I was wondering if you could help me figure out what mastery vibrato and bridge I should use for the squire 50th anniversary jazzmaster. I think I saw you put some on one at some point. I live in Dallas, and I don't know of any offset techs around. Everywhere around, here is geared up for country players and their guitars. I'm a shoegaze, noise guitar type player, so that sort of leaves me in a bit of a pickel. Great video, as ever, by the way.

@bifftannen1058 11 ай бұрын
You can get the bundle OMV / OMV-P. Both include the thimbles you may need. The only difference is cosmetic in that the OMV-P vibrato plate is buffered to a high polish while the other is matte sanded finish. Bridge installation instructions is included so any decent luthier should be able to install it, it’s not that difficult.
@Puisheen
@Puisheen 11 ай бұрын
Just here to back up Biff (is this the 1950s Biff or the 1985A one???) and yes, I'd just go for the bundle including thimbles. Squier and Fender body inserts can vary a lot these days, and using the Mastery inserts will ensure a proper fit. Go for the OMV KIT or the OMV-P KIT based on your preference for a polished vibrato

Hi Mike, I have 1965 jag and I am experiencing the whole circuitry to be somewhat microphonic. It is especially noticeable with drive pedals, and if I use to it goes into a, how to put it, “phase kinda feedback”? It is noticeable even with clean sounds. When I tap the body, neck, pickguard, control plates, even the strap buttons, you name it, the pickups simply pick it up. I’ve seen the foam under the pickups, it is all hardened and deformed, do you think it could be caused by it? It is manageable but pretty annoying especially with the gain… thanks so much!
